Here's a great excerpt from the Engadget comments about the lack of Flash on the iPad:

I was going to weigh in with a few observations but I think they've got it covered. To the great surfing masses out there (who almost to a (wo)man don't have any addons or flash blockers installed to their browsers), Flash *is* a part of the web experience.

My major whine is that the iPad looks like a cheap digital photo frame. The generic HP tablets we have at work (proper PC, only a little more expensive than the iPads) look a lot better (thinner bezel etc).

I think your summary (inadvertently perhaps ) hits the nail on the head: different people may have different needs, so it's sensible to give them choices rather than dictating a closed system, closed content, and expecting the rest of the world to revolve around you.

I think you're forgetting about that little fact that no one is forced to buy an iPad. No one is forcing a closed system on anyone who doesn't want it. If the things it cant do are important to you then sound advice would be not to buy one.

I suspect that another parallel with the iPhone will be that the early versions of the iPad will be poor cousins to later versions. This machine should ideally be using an OLED screen for low power and vibrant colour. These were not available just yet in the size/volumes Apple requires so they have met the price point with a less desirable backlit LCD design which uses 2 watts just for the screen -> big battery and only 10 hours of battery life.

I have seen other reports that Apple has tied up all the 10" OLED screens being manufactured so my guess is that a model that supersedes the one announced this week will have a much better screen and better battery life. I would be surprised if this didn't do well initially simply because it is an iThing and - let's face it - people would queue around the block to drink the skinny guy's Kool Aid even if he demonstrated at MacWorld that he pisses in it. How it fares in the longer term against Android based machines, tablet PCs and the plethora of eReaders is hard to say.

which version of vista was sold on the basis of its usefulness for surfing the net and running applications, but stops you from accessing 75% of the dynamic content on the web, or installing software that wasnt approved by Microsoft?

Most people were lucky to have a computer that booted up, and stayed up.
Let's not start comparing promises, and how well they matched up with reality.
