What will the iPad do for musicians?

As I mentioned before, no other mobile device apart from the coming Win tables really supports full Flash. There's s reason for that. And in my opinion companies like Palm only include it to get one on Apple. In practice however Flash on those devices is practically unusable.

Wow - that's huge.

And given that Flash is closely bound up with industry standard Dreamweaver web design tools and AIR as well... It ain't going away anytime soon, however much Steve Jobs and spaceman dislike it.

That list of partners: is Apple the only big name missing? The word that comes to mind is... "wilderness".

For the musician, I see nothing better than the iPhone music 'apps' being upgraded to the bigger screen to start with.
It would be nice to see a proper expressive new instrument created on it, but that would depend on the response times. Judging by how slow that driving game responds to the user's actions, it might not be good enough...

It remains to be seen what will come out of it. They were trying the same with the Openplayer (with Akamai as the biggest partner) maybe Openscreen is what it evolved in to.

Whatever they do with this Openscreen thing, I hope it actually involves improving Flash and not just making it an 'open' standard.

It's an Adobe initiative, right? The partners supporting it are not software developers, but hardware manufacturers and content providers. Adobe are obviously going to ensure this runs on the Windows platform which those companies use, and Microsoft will inevitably cooperate in that.

The point about Apple NOT being in the list is not because they make an alternative software OS, but because they make alternative hardware, and distribute content. In that sense they have chosen to stay away from Openscreen.

Either way, Flash is not going away, which means that by choosing not to support it (or Java), Apple are limiting what their users can do online. According to the Adobe guy quoted in the other link above, "without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web. If I want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab-- not to mention the millions of other sites on the web -- I'll be out of luck".

On the other hand, if you buy the device despite being aware these limitations, that means that it offers what you need. Which also means that you made an informed choice and decided that the iPad is a great device for you. Without a doubt, there will be a lot of people that feel that way and I bet that the iPad will sell like hot cakes, at least initially, to Apple fans and people that don't need multitasking/Flash/whatever.

However, if people buy it because of all the hype and then discover that they can't access a large part of the web content they are used to accessing daily then Apple is looking at a worse backlash than the one happening right now on all the tech blog/news sites.

Agreed. But it's no surprise that Apple want to control everything - business as usual for them.
I expect there to be almost no third party compatibility.
No Java and no Flash.
"please use QuickTime, please, please!" - Jobs.

They'd have the developer's using a language of Apple's own devising, if they could get away with it... oh wait....

Excellent point. I was surprised and then angered that Safari iPhone version didn't support Flash after they basically said it did. After the anger subsided, the truth is that it's pretty rare that I run into a site on the iPhone that uses Flash. Most likely, I wouldn't want to use the Flash version on the small screen anyway. Of course this is going to be different with a large screen and it seems as if Flash would be perfect on an iPad.

But truthfully, all the feelings of "I got ripped off!" melt away when I access one of the apps that I love. Last night I downloaded an app for a dollar that uses the accelerometer to chart your sleep cycles and then shifts your alarm ahead so that you wake up during the lightest part of your sleep. I haven't tried it yet but a good friend says it's amazing and has made him feel a lot better. It's apps like this that are the iPhone and will be the iPad. No use judging it before we see what can really be done with it. Face it, like others have already said, if something like the Lemur comes out for the iPad I bet we'll all end up with one. I also can't wait to see what music apps Brian Eno comes out with for it.
