Okay, I've listened through a few times now, so I'll get the voting started.

1. Rogue Batty's Dream - Totilototo

This ticked all the boxes - great composition with nicely developed themes, clever percussion programming and the mix was technically very well executed managing a convincing enveloping warmth whilst maintaining a sense of space and separation between the various elements (would have sounded muddy as hell in my hands) - and it was just a very pleasant listen through, from beginning to end.

2. She Was Hatless - John Boyd

I could almost repeat my comments from above, save, replace percussion programming with the interplay between the many melodic phrases and the inventive way that new themes were constantly being introduced and developed - lively and witty this had a strong character that made it really stand out from the rest. As I said in an earlier post - Tomita-esque. Again, great production.

3. Alone - MOK

A very assured piece from the opening chords through all of the various breakdowns and stylistic and tempo changes, showed a high level of technical proficiency in beat programming and production. The morph into the dubstep section was particularly well performed. If I'm very picky I might say that, though it displayed considerable skill, jemmying in such a range of styles and tempi, it felt a wee bit forced to me - a condensed 5 minute downtempo, or dubstep workout might have been equally effective.

4. Gone Rogue - Rellik

A real tour de force, with the emphasis on force. The gritty bass at the beginning grabbed the attention and then a bewildering blizzard of notes, melodic phrases, arpeggios and all of the rest followed. The production, particularly the heavy compression with the crunchy 8-bit sound had me thinking Justice meets chiptune? Maybe a bit too in-yer-face for my taste, but that could just be a problem with my taste?

5. Enable Smiling - MA Simon

This got a vote just for doing what it said on the tin. Simple, but original and had a whimsical charm that persuaded me.

1,2 and 3 were fairly clear in my mind but 4 and 5 could have been taken by any one of a few, so, just missing out on a top 5 and in no particular order: Curiosas - Shroom Feverish, All Too Familiar - Yeager (great production, but unfortunately it was a bit too familiar - sorry, I'm not a fan of Pachelbel's Canon), No Rogues Were Harmed - Nahkranoth, Rogue Rage - tattiemannie (whoever said YMO was spot on!), Rogues in the House -Evil Marshmallow.

And all of the rest just missed out on the 'just missing on a top 5'. Every track had something to recommend it. :)

As Norfolk was boring yesterday (watch it you lot) I managed to have a listen through the tracks and get my votes in order. Amazing spread of entries - about 9 were shortlisted and these are my top five:

1) Alone - Mok - It may be 10 minutes long but this was a stonking creation. It was only on the second listen that I began to notice the Rogue element of the patches. Most would never realise this is an OSC entry. Also I liked it, which helps. And maybe I'm a touch guilty in forcing the freeware remix :hihi:

2) Rogue Batty's Dream - Totolitoto - Another great ambient(ish) track with much to match Mok's submission. In the end this was largely down to compostion preference between the two. Awesome.

3) Heavy Rogue - V'ger - Big beat Prodigyesque noises. Fantastic! This OSC has realised more unusual tracks than normal. Loads of odd genres rather than following a synths natural "sound". Shows how good Rogue is IMHO.

4) Skanky Funker - Mr Wobble - This reminded me of my warehouse rave days around 89/90. Another completely different take on Rogue's abilities.

5)All Too Familiar - Yeager - Perhaps too much :hihi: Massive demonstration of Rogue's abilities again but personally not the track for me. Great technical ability on show as ever.

Enough respect to all the massive! Oh, oh - regressing again... :hihi:

Well done everyone,
Mouxbar

Cheers for the votes and the comments guys ....Keep 'em coming! :)

Oh, and before you run off and start tweaking Synth1, could you submit some presets to the preset folder??

http://www.4shared.com/dir/19666751/aa0 ... esets.html

I've uploaded mine, I'll do a zipfile if we can get a good collection.
... I've got an ulterior motive as well ... my experimental duo 'Skirlin Burster' have been charged with creating the music for a film ... and I've been using Rogue for some 'framework' tracks .... might be handy to have some of those sounds I'm hearing on those Rogue tracks :)

My presets aren't interesting if listening without further FX chain. So I'm not sure if it's worth sharing them, except for bd/snare/and what was supposed to be hihat, but turned into nasty noise, which fit after all in it's ugly way :D

No way, man - By giving me advanced notice of my mistake, you allowed me to be eligable for the vote at all. I thank you for that. And thank you for the kind words!!

Question:
What criterion do we judge by? There's so many different ways to look at all these great tracks, it's hard to know how I oughta vote. Some of em have intricate compositions, some of em are mixed fantastically, some of em have super creative sound design, some of em rock me stylistically, and some of em push the limits of the synth.... Not sure how I should weigh all these elements.

*edit -
My windows/cubase interaction screws with my preset saving, but finally I managed to figure out a bit of whats going on. Though my problems not fixed, I did manage to save & find my preset files for Rogue. I've uploaded all my drum presets. I hope you and others get good use out of 'em. :)

Call me a maverick, but I just I voted for the ones I liked the most

Seriously though, Enable Smiling got a vote from me, not because it struck me as being a technically accomplished composition or a particularly good mix (not that it was at all bad in either sense), but rather it was just that it somehow tickled me.

Well, although many of us feel a bit frustrated that the overwhelming majority of the votes come from the entrants themselves, at least those voters have experienced using the synth, squeezing sounds out of it etc, so a lot of what tickles me is the variety of sounds in itself ... especially if they are used in a way which impresses me.

It would appear that 4shared doesn't like adding a playlist for folders with mixed file types, at least that was the jist of my response from cust.service.... but, I've discovered that A folder can have a playlist as long as there is at least 1 mp3 in it ... if that mp3 is the first item added to the folder .... so thats good to know! I might even tell 4shared about it! :hihi:
Hey a working playlist! That's really great and will help interest I'm sure. :tu: Now if only people could name their entries properly..

Exactly the dilemma.. I've decided it's what would be the best demo track the maker would have on their site, or what would most entice me to download the synth as a visitor. A list of one note sounds showing the best preset would be beaten by a good tune with fewer and less good sounds so tune comes first imo. And a good tune with good sounds would not be impressive with a crap production, but a good production would not work with crap sounds so maybe tune 50% production and sounds 25% each?

Production? ... hah! ... smoke and mirrors! :hihi: ... we may be flawed, but we're flying!

... Anyway, OSC13 launched!

:) But this time there have been some standout productions that really have let the sounds shine it must be said.

I'll do some presets over the next few days and add them

You got some movie work, Nice ! I do love movie sound tracks. The sound track to The Book Of Eli is great! As is the movie, the sound track is kinda electronic.

do you have to vote for 5 songs? Can I just pick 3?

Cool abstractcats, it doesnt take long to render out presets, at least not in FL, so it would be cool if we could get a nice big collection .. previous attempts to finish up a comp with a legacy of presets have not come to much, thats why I'm getting in the request now ... way before we finish up :)

Yeah, the film thing is really exciting! It's being kept under wraps at the moment ... but I can tell you its a new film, but filmed in black and white ... like emulating camera and acting techniques typical of pre 1920s .. silent movie with captions. The way discussion is heading at the moment, after we've recorded the music, there may be scope to perform the stuff live to accompany the film! :) ... quite a leap since I only heard this morning that the producer liked our sample track for a single scene :)
It's not gonna be a commercial release, but still great to be involved with!
