I know. Proprietary formats, DRM, intrusive restrictions... Apple sure aint gonna make those mistakes.

I was thinking more about cumbersome recording, small capacity, expensive and quickly made redundant and superseded.

you could just shit on it anyway....

I guess you'd have to if you ran out of Geoffrey Archer novels.

not so sure the facts agree with that.

the capacity offered 2 or 3 CDs worth on a single disc when there was no alternative portable recordable digital media, so the capacity might be small for now, but it was good enough for a fair portion of its lifespan.

quickly made redundant and superseded? first introduced in 92, with the format still being improved in 2004. thats about twelve-fifteen years of life, a bit longer than the iPod has existed so far.

(In fact, for at least one use (cheap portable field recording) its only really been made redundant within the past couple of years by portable WAV recorders)

I don't know if I'll buy an iPad right away, or wait to see how the market shapes up, but I'm really looking forward to reader-type devices like this replacing fake books and sheet music in general. I've used iRealBook (iPhone) on a few gigs and it's great, but could definitely use more screen real estate.

I'm guessing all employees sign NDAs that extend well beyond separation.
Not really speculation. It's well-documented that employees are forbidden to discuss or divulge product development with anyone outside the company. How enforceable that might be is another story.

I can't remember what kind of different capacities there were but I only ever managed to get about 45 minutes of recording on a disk using optical. Oh wait.. you could record at different 'speed' or compression or something, not? More capacity meant less quality I believe.

You have to admit that it never really got picked up widely as a format for personal portable audio, not like the cassette players or CD players. It was more expensive as well.

To me it was always the format for band and field recording. Which is where it stayed and survived for so long.

Every month more than 240 million users uses facebook games - Rather more than who download them from itunes.
Yes, that maybe true but I'd like to see actual income numbers. Facebook games tend to be free.
most appstore games are too - the relevant thing here is that the device they run on is not

My ten year old portable minidisk still occasionally gets used for mobile sound-grabbing too.

Anyway, after thirty-something pages of wrangling about Flash have we actually pinpointed just what the iPad will do for musicians yet?
"are we there yet?"

I have no idea, but apparently it will be possible to make phone calls using the iPad:

It looks like a giant Ipod Touch.. for an ogre. Not sure I see a huge market for it at this time.. though when it matures I can see some uses.. if the touchscreen was durable and pressure sensitive it might make an interesting platform for drum sequencing.. among other things..

Oops! Looks like Fujitsu just made some Apple money... f**k! You'd think that after having to pay off Cisco to use "iPhone" they would check these things.

It has come to our attention that some teams are receiving queries regarding this issue and FFNA has asked that the following statement be used in response to such inquiries:

"Fujitsu is aware of Apple's iPad announcement and the possible infringement on our trademark, which has been in use in connection with Fujitsu mobile retailing computer products since 2002. We are currently discussing our options with our trademark counsel and have no further comment at this time."
