Yeah, as they say, everything looks better in slow motion, well everything sounds better in slow motion too! At least when you do it my way.

But if you want to know what I really think and always thought, it's that when the methods of analysis and synthesis get perfected to the point you can't tell the "lossless mode" from the non-lossless, it will make directly processing sound waves obsolete (except for the sake of performance/lack of delay of course/traditional effects that are easier to do on samples) as you'll be able to do anything that's possible (and even previously thought impossible) by only manipulating the image and disregarding the original sound wave. What you see here is a low-fi preview of things to come, and also an incomplete preview, because at that point imagination is the true obstacle, knowing what to do with that becomes the real problem. I've tried things (most of which I've posted on the site's blog) but there's a lot more outlandish things yet to think up and try. A shame I get so little creative feedback from users, it's like I'm the only one really trying to explore this thing at the moment.

Wow. There is so much you've said to react to. I finally realized I'm inadequate to the task for now. Maybe someone else has a more "on point" contribution to make.
All I can say for now is that the resuscitation and new activity on this thread may help expand your user base and the increase may stimulate dialog.
Everyone who has seen all this and knows other true experimenters should spread the word about Photosounder, point out this thread and particularly this last statment of A_SN's.

Let's see if somebody can feed this boy and his pet.

Yep! Sounds like a good time to start an IRC channel. I've just created #photosounder on EFNet irc://irc.efnet.org/photosounder . I've got a v1.7.0 beta for testing on there, could use some feedback/suggestions on the new stuff.

Could also be a good place for fellow explorers to share discoveries too!

I'd suggest setting up Photosounder company forum here, they seem to work well as a centrepoint for users, especially when linked from the company website. I think people might be more inclined to use a kvr forum than irc, a lot of audio geeks come here routinely.

I tend to agree with Hunter. It wouldn't hurt to do both with a little fanfare. You can always decide later whether it's worth the effort.

Sounds great to me! How do I get that created though? Whom shall I ask? Still keeping the IRC channel though, it's great for exchanging ideas fast. Actually if it wasn't for IRC there would probably be no Photosounder as it was suggested to me in an IRC channel (as well as numerous features of it).

I've been thinking about doing both a forum and an IRC channel for a long time. I was worried I'd have too much trouble getting any activity going and that it'd turn into a ghost town of a forum, but if the forum's hosted on KvR that pretty much solves the problem!

Yep as the whyterarebit says get in touch with Ben the head KVR dude. And yeah having it as part of KvR means you'll get a lot more incidental traffic than if it was on your own site alone. As with most forums you'll probably only hear from people complaining about something though :hihi:

I was reading the DOA thread about photossounder that you chimed in on last year - some interesting tech details there, thats a lot of bandpass filters!

If you get a forum set up here I'll try and remember to post results of what I get up to with photosounder there. As you say yourself, the surface has only been scraped when it comes to the potential of this!

Hi,

I don't know if this is the correct thread to have views on Photosounder 1.6.6 for Mac. Anyway, here are a couple of observations on OS 10.5.8, FWIW:

1) The program allows me to open, i. a., .sfz files. But if I do, the window draws blank and PS hangs and has to be force quit. A function to only allow valid files to be opened.

2) The Quit command does nothing. However, by clicking the window Close button, PS quits as well.

Best,

Joachim
If it were easy, anybody could do it!

Thanks, just fixed 1). As for 2), yeah, the Mac beta still isn't over, and as it stands there's not really any menu (the Quit thing isn't linked to anything). I'll have to look into it sooner or later, but Objective C and Cocoa really do my head in.

A_SN: Great piece of software. I've put a link to your site with the piece. As it is for a dance project bear in mind that there will be a visual dimension to it as well.

Ian
Ian : I only just got the time now to have a look at your piece in Photosounder, as I didn't have a computer powerful enough to open it all until recently (plus it would have been pointless to look at it before I implemented the zoom, which I completed/released a few days ago (v1.7.1)). Looking at it at the same time as hearing it is quite insightful, and even inspiring, as it shows very well the relationship between what we see and what we get in our ears, but also because it gives you ideas on how to make something similar. I'm pretty sure it would inspire other people to do the same kind of thing and I think that'd be great!

Do you mind if I make a video out of it? Basically I'd just like it to show the spectrogram simultaneously with the sound playing. Of course full credits to you with a link to your site. My videos tend to get quite a number of views too so I hope your server can take it ;-).

A_SN: Feel free to use it in any way you see fit. i was going to suggest it anyway.

I haven't imported it back into Photosounder to see what it look like so would interested to see for myself.

It'll be Apple's server taking the strain, so I hope they are up to it!

Good news everyone, there's now an official Photosounder forum on KVR http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=155

Done.

Let me know what you think. Also, do you recognise much of the source material? Just curious.
