Only in demo mode IIRC.

Not so sure - it says under limitations "8 Ableton instruments" but says nothing about them being in demo mode so I guess it does support them but just 8 per project (if licensed of course)

what the hell mean IIRC? :)

can we use puremagnetik instrument in the lite version?

Intro is a much better value and capable proposition then LE ever was. When I got rid of LE, in my email to Ableton requesting the license transfer I had a dig at them about it and their upgrade pricing. Le taught me a lesson about how Ableton see themselves in relation to their customers. They are very straight cut and not bothered. So when I had funds for suite 8, I bought 2nd hand rather then cough up more money.

If LE had the features that Intro had, I might not have bothered. I would have just used it for dj-ing and loop work into Logic. Although Logics time stretch still sounds rubbish when compared to Complex Pro in Live (and Records algo as well), so having the full version of live is still good for me.

Props upgrade was equally as bad for a lot of people who already had Reason 4. To get the upgrade, you need to have a registered copy of Reason. Record only works with Reason 4 though. So in a nutshell....Reason 4 owners paid for Record and another copy of Reason 4, but couldn't sell their original copy as it would effectively leave them without the license to upgrade. Meanwhile, others sneaked in and bought old versions of Reason on ebay, and got the same kit but for a lot less. So even if they could sell, the upgrade significantly undervalues their original investment... Luckily I was one of the people without Reason 4 !

It includes simpler instruments, and puremagnetik packs run in 'multisample mode' (you can't get inside and tweak the sampler but you can use it),so I don't see why it wouldn't.

The folks at Ableton have confused me with their product offerings and price points... and software! I love the concept behind Live, but never "got it" when I tried to use it in its various states of existence over the years. Project 5 from Cakewalk worked better for me because it just seemed so intuitive to use for me. To each his own I guess. Project 5 is dead now, but Ableton Live is... well... still live (no pun intended - really!).

I may have to pull out those demo versions again and try it out once more. Everyone raves about this software and how they can't live without it... but if I have to get a PhD to learn how to use it... forget it. I want to spend my time making music, not tweaking my software.

Once you "get" the basic concept, Live is easy to use. Just go through the onscreen tutorials that appear on the right sidebar of the screen when you first fire up the demo, and once you've done that you should be good to go....

Good luck.

I work at a dog kennel for a living.I've never been near a real recording studio, sampler,or synthesizer. The first time I bought a vst instrument I didn't realize I needed a host to use it.
I can get my head around Live and my wall is free of PhD's.

there is no real excuse (ok ok there are excuse like sudden blindness & death, but besides those kinds of excuses..)

Live is so easy ... but like any software, reading the manual , and watching the tutorials is helpful when starting out. Live has a very good youtube channel also. If you want to spend your life making music, learn how your tools work first, and you'll be fine. ;)

Lot's of good tutorials on youtube as well. Even if you only have an LE version of Live it's worth getting to know, as you can leverage it's talents t other DAWs via rewire when needed, or use it standalone to crank out loops and such for use elsewhere.

Sorry to dig up this old thread. I made the jump and bought this. The price was right and since it will map to apc40 if I choose to go that route, there isn't too much left out. So this is my tentative toe dip in the world of ableton

On the topic of shortcomings, the vst limit seems to the major one. One suggestion would be to use a rompler\sampler as that would give you 16 voices for one instrument plus dedicated effects. This makes the ik deals a little more worthwhile. Of course, the amazing shortcircuit is useful as well. Drag and drop works well. I'm a workstation user, so this hasn't been a huge deal for me.

Not sure if I'm going to keep this yet as I'm just getting to grips with it and seeing if it will fit into my workflow. I use reaper and while it is fantastic for editing\arranging, what I like about the clips view is that you can "park" a few ideas in a scene without cluttering up the arrangement. I already have energy xt which I mostly use to create new sounds and then sample them.

Still have to play around with it some more. Any other users of intro?

Besides the video tutorials on Ableton's site, there's also for Live - free on youtube, and he has some commercial ones as well.

Steamworks Audio was running a $5 offer on their Live video as well.

I had Live 7 for about a month or two and turned around and sold it - I didn't have time or patience at that point to mess with it. I kept my eye on Live 8 Intro, but found a download copy of Live 7 in the marketplace for the same price as Live 8 boxed.

And yes, upgrade price for Live Lite (bundleware) and Intro are the same. Ableton views Intro as another marketing/promotional deal, but Intro8 is much more usable than Lite is or LE was.
