Any ideas on a good book source for C++ related to DSP(if thats the right direction)/VST? Or should I just get the Steinburg SDK?
Thanks Tattie.

abstractcats, find xoxos, and click on his sig ... you'll find some useful stuff there, there's also a link to an Amazon page where you might find 'C++ A Beginners Guide' by Herbert Schildt. I've been doing a C++ self learning course with support from Aberdeen College, online tuturials, and borrowing books from the library ... but the book xoxos recommends has been the most productive for me.
The sticking point with learning C++ is that you have to learn a load of apparently useless stuff before it becomes clear as to how it all relates to music software. but if you can get it to sink in, and persevere ...
... I myself have only just begun to make the connection, so I still have a long way to go

Sounds good, I do have a Sams, Teach your self C++, but I'll try xoxos's links as well, you know he just made all his stuff freeware? Arrghh.... I've put this off long enough. Mac of BIONight is right. Voting separates the men from the boys, and apparently I'm a giant wimp with my procrastination.
Well, right or wrong, my impression when I started out on this project was that it was more like a sound design competition, rather than songwriting comp. Thus my voting is based entirely on sound design, as best I can perceive it. And that's kinda tough, too, because it can be really easy to overlook the really good patches, sometimes.

10 points: Skanky Funker - Mr Wobble
Tough decision, but I think this tracks got the cleanest, most effective, most varied, and most well used sounds in there.
Composition reminds me of Rex The Dog.
5 points: Rogue Batty's Dream - Totolitoto
The reason this one didn't make #1 for me is that the sounds aren't all that varied to my ear. I suppose there's possibly a reason for that: This track has a particular style, and maybe it demands a more narrow range of texture. However, like the previous, it was extremely effective, and the sounds were EXTREMELY well used. It is my favorite track. When I heard it, I was thinkin, 'Dang, I shoulda done my automation like that...'
3 points: Rogues in the House - EvilMarshmallow
Drums are excellent, incidentals are real creative and cool, sounds are highly varied, tones are good... All around great sound design. Seems unfinished, and could use even more elements though, particularly given it's style. Was hard to ignore the prog house element... And I loves me some prog house.
And, though this isn't relevant to the scoring, I really don't like those un-quantized drums! Gah!
2 points: All Too Familiar - Yeager
Like the previous, extremely effective sounds, and highly various, very well used. I'd have liked a bit more variation on the pad, and more incidental sounds. But what was there otherwise was exceptional.
1 point: She Was Hatless - Jon Boyd
The sound design was very well done, pretty varied despite it's lack of drum patches. It doesn't have quite as many elements as I would've looked forward to hearing, but they're very effectively and creatively used.

So, how we gonna pull others people into the thread to vote? Can we shamelessly plug this thread? I'm starting to see the problem with voting that you'd talked about earlier.tattiemannie wrote:.... yeah ... VOTES?Any way, back on topic...
1) I spent 100% of my free time on that one track for 2-3 weeks.... So if you're not working on other stuff, alright, but otherwise... =opabstractcats wrote:and I do need to spend more time and care on mine. And NOT use headphones.
2) I spent 95% of my time on headphones, besides a final mix check/adjustment at a friends' house. If you have good headphones, you're not at much of a handicap! But that's the catch... Getting good headphones, and avoiding the inaccurate ones. One's mix could be a lot better with a good room and good monitors, but if you're relegated to quality headphones, it's not a big deal until final mixdown.
IMO.

Wow, thanks MOK!
I really didn't expect to get 10 points from anyone - in fact I was suprised at the couple of points I already got, what with the standard of the other entries. As it happens, I do quite like Rex the Dog's stuff.
And @ Slugfest - yep, I sacrificed a few braincells in warehouse parties c. 89/90. Happy days.. if I had a time machine...

Cheers for the votes MOK19 ....
Shameless plugging is not a bad idea, but with a week to go, it's not all doom and gloom ... just keep the thread active, and the votes will come

10 points: TattieMannie - well... easily my favourite as i am a real fan of mr sakamoto ands this sounds like it could have come from the great man himself! What a great track this is with some wonderful sounds that all compliment each other very well. killer melodies and bassline riffage on display. also worthy of mention is the subdued/filtered male choir like chords that sit in the back of the mix - this really holds the mix together very well imo. good job sir
5 points: MOK - Alone - wonderfully moody electronica. there is some very impressive sound design in this track. great composition that really takes the listener on a journey with some great varied sections. some really good varied percussion sounds as well. reminds me of the early/mid '90's warp records era sound that i sorely miss!! love it.
3 points: Totolitoto - some good programming and ideas at work in this track. love the panned arpeggios at the beginning. lovely subdued bass sound. great moody electronica with some unexpected chord changes that work very well. nice deep atmospheric vibe to this. love it. good. great!!
2 points: Rellik - Gone Rogue. Great composition with some lovely arpeggios. i thought that the arpeggios could have been brought out of the mix a little more - sometimes sounded a little too blended in with the rest of the track. overall very well produced although compressed/limited a little too much for my tastes. enjoyed it a lot.
1 point: Yeager - All too familiar. lovely warm production as always from yeager(getting used to your sound from your OSC entries
) and great sound programming skills on display. a very good showcase for what rogue can do.
i found this very hard to judge - there is certainly a lot of talent on display here...
well done to all
