Recent Documents: Very nice now

No doubt because of my directionless way of "working", I always end up with a Recent Documents list full of rubbish sessions that have been deleted, or had their names changed to fit some new indexing scheme. The list quickly goes all silly and remains a mess, because it's so long that ten things are always waiting to be pushed off the bottom.
I don't understand in any detail how MRU lists are prescribed. I believe they are passed down by Windows, and perhaps they are unchangeable. But might it be possible to make a list editable in Cantabile, to allow removal of names no longer wanted? Could there be a command to "Remove All Unpinned Items", for example?
If that's not possible, or not a desirable innovation, what's the best way to keep a manageable list of favorite sessions in Cantabile Solo? Perhaps Session Lists? I should make more of an effort to understand those, I am sure. My few experiments with them have yielded nothing quick or convenient to use.

Why don't you pin the ones you normally want to stay there?
If the pin's don't meet your imaginations what about using the "Setlist"... there you can arrange any session (and in Performer also subsession) recall in any order you like.

I pin the few things I want to keep, but the list is long. A lot of rubbish always remains, and it seems it never gets pushed entirely away, because some new abandoned experiment appears to replace every one that finally disappears.TiUser wrote:Why don't you pin the ones you normally want to stay there?

The problem lies not in retaining the good things, but in discarding the trash.
I misspoke before: "Setlists" are the other thing I have tried. They do provide a fine list that can be maintained exactly as you like. But getting to them takes a few clicks and a little forethought. I was hoping for something immediately, even frivolously available.
This is hardly an urgent matter; it just seems Cantabile might be improved by having some sort of instantly-available Favorites list like that.
Did you ever receive your XG softsynth? If so, was it of any use?

Oh I see... maybe Brad can do at least a toggle to hide the unpinned entries if deletion gets too odd...lallis wrote: The problem lies not in retaining the good things, but in discarding the trash.

Of course, it will no longer be a Recent Documents List if modified in the manner I've been suggesting. It would quite possibly be a bad idea to change its nature and purpose.TiUser wrote:... maybe Brad can do at least a toggle to hide the unpinned entries if deletion gets too odd...
I haven't thought this out very clearly, as you can see.

I think simple view options can manage this without intriguing the concept of recent documents.lallis wrote:Of course, it will no longer be a Recent Documents List if it modified in the manner I've been suggesting. It would quite possibly be a bad idea to change its nature and purpose.
- sort pinned favorites on top
to show pinned documents always on top of the list
- show pinned favorites only
to blend away the unpinned garbage
Both could be accomplished on the recent document list - but of course it is not the recent document list, it's just a special view on it. Anyway, a view does not need to touch the recent document list itself and therefore the concept remains untouched - it's just like a kind of filter.

I'm currently work on something for this:
1. Ability to just hit delete key in the MRU list and remove the select entry (unless it's pinned, in which case del does nothing).
2. A right click context menu with commands to remove all, remove unpinned and remove missing.
Point 1 is done and will be in the next build, point 2 is proving a little stubborn but will probably make it too.

Wonderful! Now I can stop muttering vaguely here, because Bradr is yet again on the stick.bradr wrote:1. Ability to just hit delete key in the MRU list and remove the select entry (unless it's pinned, in which case del does nothing).

"Remove Missing" is more sophisticated than I had hoped for, and it might prove the most helpful of the three.
Thanks for nice news.

Just another idea:
You can create windows shortcuts to session files and put them wherever you want. Then you can load sessions from this pool by double clicking. Benefit: you can create as many pools of shortcuts in folders as you like and you don't need new features to get this...

I just found the update 2051 available, so I installed it. This MRU list innovation is better than I hoped for. Thus is one more small annoyance removed from life; that's always a step in the right direction.
None of the MIDI anomalies from 2050 remain, at least from what I can see during half an hour's use.
Good stuff. Many thanks!
