It's basically the first synth you hear in the song. Any ideas?

Obviously an arpeggiation, but it sound like either just a saw or high pitch square high-pass filtered. I tried to make the sound in synth1 (it's free), I got reasonably ok results, but not as close as you would probably like.
Also note the is some distortion, not heavy, more suttle.
What I say is probably useless, but I'll offer it to give you a starting point.

The Original was done with a Korg Prophecy.. although you should be able to recreate it with most softsynths by using a very short delay and a sweeping notch filter..Fragile_Frankie wrote:

Aah, thanks guys. I already know the notes the bassline, so I can play it... I'm sure there's distortion in there, 'cause I hear that's like a trademark of The Prodigy.
@jaha: maybe post a sample of your work?
@chevy: The original? I don't think I've heard it, but I'm guessing it's from 1996. Did it use a Korg Prophecy preset like Firestarter and Smack My Bitch Up used?

Yeah.. Liam was quite big on the Prophecy when it first came out.. I think there may have been some level of endorsement.. you can hear it all over TFOTL.Fragile_Frankie wrote: @chevy: The original? The preset was probably edited to suit, but still has a very distinctive tonal colour to it..
It's a nice little synth with lot's of controller options and was quite a hit at the time. I ended up selling mine and upgrading to a Z1 but they are worth picking up if you happen to see one going cheap.

Yeah I wouldn't mind having one of those. Hmm, how about the actual patch tho? I'm not familiar with notch filters... I'm used to LP, BP, and HP.

A Notch Filter is essentialy a BP filter in reverse aka Band Reject filter.Fragile_Frankie wrote:Yeah I wouldn't mind having one of those. Hmm, how about the actual patch tho? I'm not familiar with notch filters... I'm used to LP, BP, and HP.
Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).

How does the notch filter affect this particular synth bass? And what about the actual sound, what I should start with? Maybe a few detuned saws? What should the cutoff and res be?

sounds more like a simple saw bas with the lows rolled off and cutoff being modulated by an lfo. the notching sound more like a phaser on a send to me.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

And a friend of mine tried it too:

And I edited his synth a bit and got this:

What are you working with?.. I could probably knock up a similar patch in Reason4... won't have a chance till the weekend thoughFragile_Frankie wrote:Bump. Any help would be just great. I really wanna nail this sound here.

it's basically a mixture of saws and squares (isn't it always?!
) the thing with prodigy sounds is the offset in semitones between the oscillators, I think you had most of the general character in your example, just try changing one of the oscs 4/5/7 semitones.

I'm much more interested in that sync sound, it's a beast! (I got nowhere near in the example above, sync osc wise so any ideas lemme know!)
Hope that helps

I mostly use just Toxic Biohazard. I'm guessing maybe you use Thor or something? Either way, I'm interested in hearing your take on it.Chevytraveller wrote:What are you working with?.. That example sounds decent. What's the specific sound you're talking tho? I don't really recognize it.scoobz wrote:it's basically a mixture of saws and squares (isn't it always?!) the thing with prodigy sounds is the offset in semitones between the oscillators, I think you had most of the general character in your example, just try changing one of the oscs 4/5/7 semitones.

Well apart from the loop there's only two sounds in the example, the one you're talking about and the other is the one I'm talking about
Granted it's not exactly the same but you should be able to tell which sound I'm refering to in the prodigy track from it.
Hope the offsetting oscillators tip puts you on the right track.
Oh and you're welcome
