Cubase: Copy & Paste no longer working!! Funny but annoying

OK this happened to me in SX3 and now made its way into Cubase 5. In many of my projects, doing a simple copy, cut, or paste doesn't work. It just doesn't do anything. The tracks are NOT locked. And copy and paste was working for a while until last nite. This pertains to Midi and Audio events, or anything in the Sequencer view.
Control + D DOES work though so thats my workaround for now. But its really crazy that this basic stuff is broken on my end. I am guessing I am the only one experiencing this? I haven't heard anybody else with this problem. Perhaps I should uninstall SX3 and reinstall C5? It seems like ever since I started working with projects from SX3 again, Cubase has become unstable for me. Please chime in.

I don't use Cubase but I found in my own DAW, that certain shortcuts were changed over time.
The obvious thing to ask yourself is;
Did you make any changes (add/remove VSTs etc) before this happened?
Have you 'unchecked' a menu item so that shortcuts no longer work?

Weird. I don't think I have ever used copy/cut/paste explicitly in a DAW. I usually use ctrl/shift/alt drag, etc, but never ctrl+c/x/v. I guess it's because I need the visual cues of dragging a soundclip or MIDI notes around.
Anyway, sorry to hear about that.

Aloysius,
good theory about the shortcut thing. Hmm. The thing is. last nite for a span of 5 mins, it seemed copy+paste was working again, then to later stop working again.
alt+Dragging stuff is fine also when working with one channel. But when I want to select a big block of events when I am arranging, I like to copy and paste quickly without dragging and worrying that the Quantize Snap is correct. Its annoying me.

It could be something other than Cubase causing it.
I have recently seen two PCs sometimes lose the state of the Ctrl and/or Alt keys. They would behave as if one of those keys was stuck on. Tapping the Ctrl and Alt keys clears the problem. Both of these PCs are running XP SP3 with the latest patches.
Another system a few years ago lost the ability to paste for just one user, really strange. We had to create a new user profile and delete the old one to fix it.

I had the same problem a year ago. It turned out it was my keyboard's fault. As soon as I replaced it everything was fine.

hmmm. but the strange thing is that its only a problem in Cubase. It seems to work otherwise. Still my keyboard is old. I am going to replace it and see what happens. thx for the comments

One way to check is to execute cut/copy/paste from the edit menu with the mouse. It it works there, and the shortcuts are shown there as they should be, Ctl-X/C/V it's probably the keyboard or something else on your system interfering with the keyboard commands.zion7 wrote:hmmm. but the strange thing is that its only a problem in Cubase. Like the Cubase virtual keyboard maybe? I was going nuts trying to figure out why the duplicate command didn't work. It was the virtual keyboard blocking it.

I have had instances where copy and paste isnt on the menu when I select a bunch of midi notes or audio eventsLawrenceF wrote:One way to check is to execute cut/copy/paste from the edit menu with the mouse. There is certainly a chance that this could be a bug inside of Cubase affecting some users, and not related to anything else. Have you posted this on the Cubase forums to see if others have had this issue or found a fix for it?zion7 wrote:I have had instances where copy and paste isnt on the menu when I select a bunch of midi notes or audio events

I have Lawrence. Only 1 reply by a dude asking me if I knew how to correctly copy and paste in Windows. KVR is a much better source for support imoLawrenceF wrote:There is certainly a chance that this could be a bug inside of Cubase affecting some users, and not related to anything else. My appologies to bump a rather old topic but I have Cubase 5 since recently and I noticed that shortcuts are not working if the virtual keyboard is on in the transport panel doubt this is it though as the topic starter seems to have the problem occasionally and only with copy/paste? but hey maybe this helped some people having problems getting any shortcut to work

Can't say i've had any problems with cut/copy/paste tbh. Although you are right, things can get a bit screwy with the Virt Keyboard on the T/Bar.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive
