Alright, I know some of you have seen me repeat Squidstories and it must get tiring so I am really trying to think of things I haven't talked about before in case they might be interesting... and I will try to keep them more related to drums somehow as opposed to the usual keyboard geek stuff which I have much more of... being a keyboardist and as into keyboards as I am.

Some of you are Genesis fans like I am. I grew up listening to them and albums like Duke got a lot of play. One of my favorite songs off of it is actually "Please Don't Ask"... but I love everything else too and Duke's Travels for different reasons... also Cul-De-Sak. But, there's just something heartfelt and real about Please Don't Ask. Plus it has these cool backing vocals. Anyway, the song is about Simon Collins' mother and a bit about Simon in there too.

Now some of you know that I've been working on music with Phil's son Simon for the past 3 years. We're good friends and the musical chemistry is great because basically I am heavily influenced by Tony Banks and he's heavily influenced by his dad so it has a sort of Nuevo-Genesis sound to it sometimes (especially the new stuff which no one has really heard yet... but it's the best sounding stuff we've worked on) plus we both like bands like Sigur Ros, Radiohead and other music that isn't Genesis. It's easy and fun to collaborate.

Anyway, something that happened somewhat recently is I finally got to meet Simon's mom. She's really cool, friendly and all that. But, I was thinking "So, you're the one who that song was written about!" I didn't say it of course but I imagine enough people HAVE in her life. Imagine songs like "In the Air Tonight" -as played as that is - being about YOU! Man, that is so bizarre if you think about it. Simon told me even "Invisible Touch" was about her. "Please Don't Ask" is so personal that Phil actually starts to almost cry when he played it in this Classic Albums video on Face Value because that song almost made it on his first solo record (that BBC series is amazing btw - I have on on The Who Who's Next and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon that are fantastic as well... I want to get them all).

So, it was one of those things where at first I was thinking about the songs in the back of my head. But then I got over it quick and she was a regular person within minutes. It was just something unusual to think about. Your personal life being immortalized in a song that even Mike Tyson punches someone to in a movie.

STORY 2: RATED R (okay PG13)

Side note here for extra entertainment value... this made me think of something else. LA is LA. Anyone who lives there must have tons of stories like this - really. But, I was invited to go to Billy Idol's manager's party once. Just some girl who wanted to go because she was the hair colorist for his wife who was a 70's Playboy centerfold. I forget her name now but growing up if you could get hold of a 70's Playboy it was like striking gold. Someone's father always had a stash that you could raid. So I knew the Playboy centerfolds' names as well as people knew their baseball cards. (sorry if that offends any women reading this but guys are guys and kids, well... you know, I am not going to defend it).

So, when I arrive at the party and meet this woman I remember shaking her hand thinking how bizarre it was that I have seen her completely naked. I mean EVERYTHING - full on 70's au natural and the whole kit. I think she could tell when a guy knew who she was. I obviously didn't say anything. But, there must have been some vibe that told her "Yep, he's one of those". Hey, but don't pose if you don't want the world to know you have a mole on your ass. That's the moral of that story.

Alright now come on! This is good stuff. I am not the only one who had an experience like that. Jason Scheff of the band Chicago once told me he met a 70's Playboy centerfold (Karen Velez - this one I remember because if I went to a Chicago concert I'd hold up a sign that said "Valez" just to make Jason laugh and mess up on stage). Anyway, his story is even better and more surreal because it involved golfing with the 6 Million Dollar Man (Lee Majors) and his wife or girlfriend was Karen Valez and that is how Jason met her. Who golfs with the 6 Million Dollar Man in the first place? AND is he good???? Bionics? I don't play golf. My mother golfed with Gene Wilder. I am SURE she didn't make the most of it. If I golfed with him I would have made all sorts of annoying jokes like "I'm sorry sir you get NOTHING. GOOD DAY!" But, golfing with Lee Majors... that's really different. To me it isn't so interesting that someone meets a celebrity per se. But it is the unlikelihood of who it would be. The lead singer of Chicago and an actor from a 70's TV show get along great. That stuff amuses me for some reason... as does Jason's story about meeting Karen Valez and pretty much having the same strange feeling about it that I had in the story above.

So... juicy name dropping, weird circumstances, esoterica and some controversial commentary that could get me in trouble... these are the things you expect from me in one of these threads. Forget the sales talk for a second, forget the shameless bumps to the thread... this is the rare entertainment you get! Plus you never know when there's going to be a "name the movie" contest and that could be worth some epointz so... Do I have your attention now? Good. (Name the movie first for 5 epointz).

Anyone wanna see second prize? (hint)

$99 is about the max I can pay at the mo, so having to buy the infinite player aswell just about puts it out of reach, is there any chance once we pass the 200 mark infinite player could be included as a bonus?

Also, to bump my old question..(apologies if I missed an answer)

There is randomization/anti-machine-gun malarky. It's a cool system of alternating hits per performance articulation.

You would have liked the previous group buy which did include the Infinite Player. We did run it for over 2 months though. Now the only way to get it for free is to purchase both the Ultimate Studio Bundle 1 and 2... which is still more than $99.

One good thing though is that the $50 Infinite Player does come with a $50 grand piano for free. If this Bundle 2 goes down to $99 which is likely will... but let's not count our chickens until they're hatched. That still has to be REACHED by the group. It started off with a bang but slowed down a little bit in the past 48 hours. Hopefully it will pick up again... although we do have over a month left so there's a good chance. In any case, $99 + $50 for this is a fantastic deal. Personally I'd spend $50 more and just get both bundles - especially since there will be patches made that combine the kit pieces of BOTH to make new mega kits. That to me is the goal of this as a collection. Plus it is the only chance to get it that way. Once it is gone it will be gone and some REALLY great kit patches will only be available this one time and no longer offered.

I can honestly say that if ever there was a time to try to scrounge up $199 for a Sonic Reality drum product this would be it. To have Bundle 1 & 2 with a free Infinite Player... with THAT many kits. It's just never going to happen again. Especially not with both Ocean Way Drum kits and so many Drum Masters kits plus all of the famous studio impulse ambience. No, this is it! After the end of March it's back to normal.

Now, to help people decide we are going to be doing various things over the coming weeks to help people understand all of the features better. I did do a thorough explanation of each panel in our company forum. http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=277554 But if people prefer to see these things done with video screen capture and narration then that's what will be next plus some other stuff that gives you an idea of what it is all about and the benefits it has to offer.

It seems as if the new hi-hat is a little more expressive. Can you please summarize what you have done that makes this hi-hat behave differently than the previous version? Is it accessing more samples at different degrees of open and closed?

Actually, the snare is quite different sounding. The original kit had a ringing snare. It could be that you tightened the decay in this version... I haven't explored further.
Somewhere in the background zedd

I might have but that would have been done in the last Global Patch Update. I haven't touched any of the other kit pieces for this.

So... how this works. Well, for Drum Masters the hi hat script for V-Drums has 5 different articulations going. There's inside closed - medium and open, there's edge closed - medium and open and then a foot.

In the V-Drum hi hats there's something in the hardware unit called the "border" which determines when the closed note output switches to an open note output. Some V-Drum kits let you set it (and we set it to 90 by default for a VH-12 in our TD20 which seemed best) and some don't let you adjust the border... and it is most likely 127. What that means is that if you press the hat all the way down it is at 127 and as soon as you lift it up a little bit (126-0) it is triggering the open note. Either way our script handles it, you'd just miss out on some real time envelope control of the closed if you don't have a border setting but this is subtle.

So, as I just said, there is real time envelope (release/decay) control of each of the articulations AND there is switching. Between both the closed inside and closed edge there is a medium open sample and then an inside open and an edge open (more of the Bonham-style open). Those switch by CC4 which is simultaneously adjusting envelope release times as well to get more variance in the decay - this is to simulate the amount of decay a real hi hat would have as you gradually opened it.

The ranges of release times for each articulation can be tweaked individual if one wanted to (but this is really for us to program and only experts to tweak). Also the switch point along the CC4 between the mediums and opens can be set as well so the open comes in at a higher or lower number from the controller. As for the switch point between the closed and medium... this is set by the border in the module.
