Agree with Debra. When I listen to Music Cafe songs I hear great mixing and engineering but usually a song that's completely forgettable or doesn't compete or add anything of value to its respective genre. It seems like many people here seem to value production value over substance, heck even pros like trance/dance music gods like BT fail to produce great memorable music but have great sounding production. Have you ever listened to music here and said to yourself "Why aren't these guys even signed to at least an indie music label?"debra1rlo wrote:
for instance the biggest "problem" I hear in stuff posted at the Music Cafe isn't mixes or shoddy performances or poorly thought out melody/progression... it's that the track doesn't resonate with me,
A few months ago I was listening to a band (Avi Buffalo) http://avibuffalo.bandcamp.com/track/whats-in-it-for and noticed they weren't signed but had great hooks and great songs. Found out later that the singer/songwriter of the group was only 18 and then a few months they got signed to Sub Pop as I expected and is now going on tour with people like Sufjan Stevens and Japandroids. If that dude didn't have a myspace or released his songs on the web I don't think I'd ever get to hear music I really like but what other people consider shite music.

No, everything is permitted. Nothing is false either. I think you know how I feel about these kinds of subjects. In my opinion, no perspective monopolizes validity.eduardo_b wrote:So everything is false?justin3am wrote:the phrase "nothing is true, everything is permitted" has so many applications in life. I'd say that a person who is insecure about their work should be encouraged to share what they are most insecure about. It doesn't have to be about arrogance, I simply believe that the world is a better place with more music not less and every person has their own definition of what is and is not music.
That said, I acknowledge the validity of other peoples perspective and i reserve the right to make fun of people I disagree with.

It's been said that despite how marginal a lot of today's pop music is, the production values are consistently excellent. I think this is the reality of being successful commercially in a crowded marketplace. Not that strong production is trying compensate for deficiencies in musical quality, but rather because people are attracted to it. Sort of lends credence, as much as I hate to say it, to the motivation behind the loudness wars.generalstargazer wrote:When I listen to Music Cafe songs I hear great mixing and engineering but usually a song that's completely forgettable or doesn't compete or add anything of value to its respective genre.
I was very young when I began noticing production values. I was buying lots of albums, mostly British bands, and was regularly appalled with uneven loudness and tonal qualities among tracks and entire albums that seemed thin or weak in overall sound. So, my focus on production values goes way back, but at the same time I am acutely aware of quality songwriting or, more often, the lack of it.
I don't think music without current production values would have a chance in the market no matter how good the music itself. Maybe it's the result of listening in cars, which are noisy, and on portables that come supplied with bottom of the line earphones -- which is pretty much all of them. In your face production sounds pretty good in these common listening situations.

I dont share mine unless I know its perfect, which it never is, which means it never gets shared.
It doesnt matter though because I enjoy creating it. There's a certain thrill which can last for days when you make a combination that you love, or there's a section that came together so beautifully you want to listen to it over and over again. That's the reward.
However, in my mind, none of my songs are ever finished, completed and thus worth sharing.

That is as profound a statement (William S Burroughs in The Western Lands, repeating a legend 'from the deathbed of Hassan i Sabbah, Master of Assassins') as there is in all literature in my opinion. You give equal validity to all things, it's all a wash, there is no discernment available after a point. Everything is true = nothing is permitted.eduardo_b wrote:So everything is false?justin3am wrote:the phrase "nothing is true, everything is permitted" has so many applications in life. IMO of course.
