Yes, I've come over to the Dark Side and created my first SynthEdit VSTI. But not your average monosynth.

From the Read Me:
Instability is a feeback loop noise generator, built with SynthEdit. Basically this is a sound toy, not a serious instrument. Although it is possible to divine the purpose of the various controls, they have been left intentionally ambiguous to encourage exploration and random tweaking. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding this plugin, please direct them to the nearest brick wall.
Warning: Attempting to use this plugin in the creation of an actual musical composition may result in significant loss of listeners.

Okay, 109 views of this message so far, and no replys!
I know I said you could direct all questions and suggestions to the nearest brick wall, but I was at least hoping for something along the lines of "You're totally wacked!" or "You're mad as a hatter!" or "Your poorly designed plugin erased my hard drive!".

its description alone sounds like its gonna destroy my ears, so I'm just scared
After some ear-shattering experiences, I have generally been trying to avoid touching anything that has "feedback" in it
this combined with "[controls that] have been left intentionally ambiguous to encourage exploration and random tweaking" makes me poop my pants

Actually, it does respond to the keyboard with changes in pitch... if you have the right settings!
Maybe I should put a large, obviously labeled master volume control in the middle of the screen for the faint of heart

i do actually like the knobs youve used in fact the whole gui is nice, and i have been getting some sounds i like just as you say i mustnt have found the right settings for keyboard manipulation
well thats where my sampler comes in

ok...i'll agree with that. judging by this vsti youdeastman wrote:"You're mad as a hatter!"
are indeed mad as a hatter!
i really like your concept for this gui. how did you
do the knobs? they are excellent.
i appreciate the exploration approach and i dont mind
that the controls are not labled.
very interesting synth. very creative.

The interface was modeled in 3DSMax (my day job being a 3D animator...)
Not willing to leave well enough alone, I guess I'll break down and at least describe how it works
Three sine wave oscillators modulate each other in succession, with the third one feeding back into the first. Each one can also be modulated by an lfo with rate and depth controls. The output level of each oscillator is then adjusted before then are all fed into a resonant filter. The hipass and lowpass outputs of this filter then each go to their own secondary filter, which are then passed to the audio output. The output of each of these filters can also be fed back into oscillator one, starting the process all over again. Also, oscillator three feeds into a sample and hold which can be sent back to modulate oscillator one as well.
The shiny, candylike button switches between having the audio output gated by midi notes (for actual musical usefullness) or contstant audio signal. When gated by midi, you can also adjust the overall volume and the release time of the notes.
And yes, the oscillators are all modulated by midi notes as well. If you have too much modulation happening, it will just sound like noise and you won't be able to tell that the pitch is changing. But thats the way I like it

This thing is brilliant!
I really like the GUI, very different.
I also like the fact that none of the controls are labled, makes it more experimental.
Great work!

Jesus! I can't believe someone dredged up this old thread!
Honestly, I created Instability after a grand total of about one hour's worth of Synthedit experience. I've always felt a bit guilty about the ambiguous GUI- I know what all the knobs do, and it would admittedly be a lot more logical if you all knew that as well. Maybe one of these days I'll find a free moment and put some labels on a new version.
I really do like Instability... I mostly use it to create weird percussion samples, which I slice up and load into Battery. I've also made similar patches on my Nord Modular original, G2, and Doepfer. I've been meaning to build some for Reaktor and SynthMaker, but haven't found the time. Feedback loops are your friend... and no, I'm not talking about your PA system feeding back into your microphone and blowing out your eardrums!

Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.
