Well, in slight contradiction to my last post, I actually prefer one of these c64 synths to Olga - so long as we are allowed the usual range of fx. The c64 synths do have the benefit of being genuinely quirky, whereas, UI apart, Olga is just another subtractive VA.
Anyway dwsel 'won' the right to choose, so let's see what he(/she?) decides.

IMHO, Olga is so unlike any other VA - it's genuinely grungy, and it's especially great for distorting the shit out of everything, without sounding harsh or bad. It can be very warm and breathy, as well. It's definitely not "just another subtractive VA". The onboard phaser is really sick, and the filter is really, really sweet. Gotta love that beastie!

Count me in for drumless tracks with krakli's Stringz. I'm in the mood for writing a full orchestral piece
Apart from that, I've totally lost focus in this thread and I thini V'ger is right. This should be seperated from the main poin of this thread: Casting the votes and discussing the outcome of this Synth1 challenge

Good point mac!, but still, it keeps this thread up there at a time we need folks to consider listening and voting.
Just want to say sorry, I hoped to be more active in the present discussion, but having a prob with my internet connection over the past 3 days ... and trying to get some other stuff done as well.
So now I can actually have contact with KVR, I'll try and get my 2p worth in quickly.
Featured synth ... we decided on how synths are chosen as a group, and the situation is that the 'bottom dweller' of each comp will take the lead in deciding. Suggestions are welcome, and will be added to the growing list that will be made available from time to time to assist the 'synth chooser'.
So all thats gonna happen with Olga at the moment, whether I ( or anyone else ) might like the synth or not, is that it will be added to the list.
I hope to launch OSC14 - Anubis tonight, and will have a think about starting a OSC synth choice thread.

I'm down to 15 tracks, and I can't seem to eliminate any more
I just have to eliminate at least 5 or 6 more from my list, or my votes won't make much difference...

In general, it sounds from reading these forums, that Synth1 has a large following. Having used it a bit now, i can see why. This is one of the best freeware synths, and it's easy on the CPU. I've heard this VSTI mimick the plucking of a standup bass, do a decent impersonation of a lead guitar; drums, cymbals; you name it. There are going to be a lot of great tones in this month's contest entries, that's for sure.
13_Moons_and_a_Sun_too: This one grabbed me right away. It was like a sonic vortex from the get-go. This is a great jam! It's really bluesy, but like a tone poem too. It's like jazz, wrapped in a bunch of far out synth1 tones.
21 Synths1: That's some great percussion! I like the riffing. It reminds me of 'dub step' or something like that.
AlphaSynthExpress: This is some outstanding club music. That's a great kick! Actually, all of the percussion is top-notch. It all reminds me of Erasure at times. It kind of has a "Dr. Who vibe," but in 'four on the floor' timing, rather than 'triplets' or 'swing.'
Another Soundtrack: This opens up sounding like 'pad music,' then breaks right out. That's an excellent contrast. Then, it abruptly halts, and goes into 'half time.' This is reallly cool. Then, it builds back into 'regular time.' It's great how it keeps changing up. That "Marilyn Manson percussion" is great! Maybe it gets to be a bit too loud overall at the end, but the concept is brilliant in any event.
Back To The Groove: This reminds me of Weather Report. It's got a '70s jazz sort of feel. That snare is great, too!
Dreaming At dusk: This sounds very '70s to me. Is the kind of electronic music they were making in Germany in the '70s? It's got some great tones.
feeling_of_weirdness: This is some happening club music. It sounds like an after hours club.
Final Frontier: It's amazing that all of the tones are coming from the same synth! This reminds me a bit of Human League, and related bands.
Follow the Groove: This is what i'm talking about; the sort of thing in the opening where the sound kind of mimics a guitar, or other plucked strings.
Hyacinth: This is really cool. Parts of it remind me of Keith Emerson on a song like Jerusalem.
Karma Sutra: Epic.
Land of Green Ginger: Wow. Just. Wow. It's like hanging out in the synth1 lounge.
Lighthouse Island: This is a feature-length piece. Just sit back and listen to where it goes. It goes to a lot of different, interesting places.
Nice Patch A Shame About The Song: This sounds good! There's definitely some space there for vocals or a lead instrument.
Nucleus-1: This piece has some great dynamics, in the way it builds. That percussion bit (on the 2 and the 4 notes?) reminds me of similar percussion in True Faith by New Order. Maybe if there were some 16th-note runs here and there with that bit.
R2L4: This one is some heavy disco. This one takes off from the get-go, and doesn't let up too much.
Sunny Ode: This one is really charming.
synth one thingamabob: This is brilliant!
The crimson: This is really cool. It sounds like it could be one of the quirkier entries, music-theory-wise.
The Last Synth on Earth: This is a great production. The percussion is really cool.
Thus Spoke Piazolla: This sounds like Weather Report meets Hall and Oates. This is great stuff. This could be the lead-in for a '70s televsion show. Those shows had a lot of jamming theme songs like this. Is this a cover?
Visions of a Seagull: This is some great ambient stuff! This is really pretty.
Wide Open: That opening is gold!
The voting here could have gone any number of ways, but went:
2 13_Moons_and_a_Sun_too
2 Hyacinth
10 Land of the Green Ginger
2 RL24
2 Sunny Ode
2 synth one thingamabob
2 The Last Synth On Earh
2 Thus Spoke Piazzolla
1 Visions of a Seagull
1 Wide Open
There are quite a few others here which are in the same league. All of the tracks are great...Honourable Mentions all around...

Cheers for the votes guys!! Nice to get off to a start!
Deep Fiber, sorry the system is not your cup of tea, no doubt we will review it before the next comp. If you feel you would rather vote 5,4,3,2,1, then do it! As long as you dont exceed 26 votes, and dont vote for more than 10 entries, I dont see a problem! There would be no point in running with a more flexible option if it proves inflexible for some folks, so do your worst!

Actually deep fiber, I'm gonna do a teensy amendment to the OP to make it clear that it is not compulsory to use all 26 votes ..... though I suspect anyone who has heard the tracks on offer would wish there were 126 to play with!

it will take time to select favourites out of these...so many great compositions and sounds...i listened to all of them once....no clue at the moment where my votes will go.
