Considering the quality, it amazes me.
That's the same amount of RAM my A3000 sampler has, and I've made plenty of tunes with that.

edit - I just checked the video - I think it looks shite.
Might I guess you were young once and interested in the latest "must have" while the old fuddy duddies spent hours splicing their two inch tape and positioning their ribbon mikes(if they were working that week).

Let me tell you what Thumbjam feels like:

It feels like you are playing a musical instrument - that's what it feels like.

I am AMAZED by it. You can actually play expressively by titling and rotating the iphone. The sounds sound great and there are plenty of them.

I could see using this by jamming along with my own tunes or even with my friends.

Combined with the Pico, I will look darn futuristic, that's for sure.

Conclusion..

Making music on a smart phone is a shit experience.
bit like browsing the web too...thats why i have a computer....if i want to talk to someone, i'll use my phone, if i want to write a song, i use my pc...its not rocket surgery
I've never heard of rocket surgery before! Is that where they surgically implant rocket boosters in your back? Or maybe that's what they're calling "rocket science" for some future bio-mechanical rockets.
:D

This app looks cool. It almost makes me want to get an iphone.

Looks fantastic!

I've got MusicStudio, which is invaluable as a sketchpad, which ThumbJam can't really do. If I am on the tube with a new tune in my head, I can put it down on a "real" keyboard so I won't forget it 5 minutes later... otherwise it'll almost certainly be gone forever. IMHO all the other features, to make a "finished" song, aren't really so important - they sound only slightly ok at best, anyway.

ThumbJam is different. The sounds are way better. It's more fun, more intuitive. Genius to make use of positioning info for the guitar, for example (which sounds particularly fantastic). Also very clever to have a keyboard that only plays in scale. It means you can sound really good and have fun very easily. However, imho, it's not a compositional tool and isn't meant to be, so it sits alongside MusicStudio and doesn't replace it. It's just plain fun!

I've been faffing around a decision about whether or not to get an iPod Touch for too long ... this has pushed me over the edge.

I never did like holding onto gift certificates for too long.

As an ideas sketchpad that will do me nicely. Plus I can control my gear via TouchOSC and all that goodness.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I would love this on Android! :D

It's a very nice app, as in 'fun'. But you can't make tracks with it. You can make phrases, but then what? Spend a day trying to build the rest of the track around it on your computer? Try to match sounds, or maybe record a bunch of phrases and try and glue them together.. again, on your computer. And what if you want to record precise melodies? You need to become as nimble as a magician first to play accurately on it. And you can't export individual tracks, only one loop.

It's a toy.. it's a very nice toy, and something that can help you get ideas, but you cant make any tracks with it.

For many people - those who don't 'make money' with 'serious' music - toys are what it's all about.
