Best iPhone Music App Yet!

It's a toy.. it's a very nice toy, and something that can help you get ideas, but you cant make any tracks with it.

For many people - those who don't 'make money' with 'serious' music - toys are what it's all about.

btw, don't get me wrong. I think it's a brilliant instrument (and that's what I think it is), not an app to make a track. But that shouldn't be a bad thing.. not knocking that at all.

As an app it's pretty darn good.

Just created a nice bazouki melody. I may use that in a track.

Export is quite cool althugh slightly quirky. You go to a local address over wifi in a browser (as usually is the case with these apps) and then you need to click the archive link. What's good is that it saves all instruments separately.

maybe I am ignorant but, anyone actually use iphone for music making ? This is really the serious question - I want to understand it Why should I buy iPhone and music apps if I have my laptop + desktop with Ableton installed ?

I think it has to do with convenience of size. Smaller is better for some situations where a laptop is not possible.

I'd buy an iPhone with these kinds of apps in a heartbeat, but I simply can't afford one.

Like I said before, I don't and almost certainly won't use it for actual music making. But MusicStudio potentially invaluable for sketching a melody when the muse hits on a train or... well, anyway really. I've lost count of the number of times I've had what I thought was a great tune, only to lose it due to my dodgy old brain.

ThumbJam, for most of us, is a toy. But it's a fair point that some peksy kids will probably end up with a number one using it....

It's a very nice app, as in 'fun'. But you can't make tracks with it. You can make phrases, but then what? Spend a day trying to build the rest of the track around it on your computer? Try to match sounds, or maybe record a bunch of phrases and try and glue them together.. again, on your computer. And what if you want to record precise melodies? You need to become as nimble as a magician first to play accurately on it. And you can't export individual tracks, only one loop.

Nope. Not necessarily a toy. I see its usefullness as a solo instrument, and for backing tracks. Just so you know, you can zoom into or out of a particular octave or set of octaves, so 'being nimble' is not necessarily accurate unless you want all 88 keys active at once. Also, switching between octaves is fairly easy.

It's actually harder to use my Axiom 61 controller and DEFINITELY less complex to use than my CME UF8. However, it's FUN TO USE and sounds GREAT.

Since the iPad will have some 'productivity' applications from Apple, I'm hoping they are implementing a decent document management paradigm. That's the one thing the original iPhone OS/SDK lacked. Once they have this, much more useful music applications will start to come, supporting more file formats and easier import/export of files.

... well, it has served me well a few times... last time my little baby was sick, i had to wait in the hospital for 5 hours alone... ended the book, enters iPhone music app.

YOU can't- why on earth do you think that your particular methods of making music must apply to everyone? ever heard of RECORDING? I can layer complex melodies and rhythms with Thumbjam no problem- then process/record them with my kaoss pad or computer- I never use MIDI or quantization or any of the other silly gimmicks you think you have to have in order to work- silly me: I just try to PLAY well and if it is tricky I record a few takes until I get it right

there has been at least one album made with Beatmaker, iirc. Now, how popular this artist is/was, is another question.

music apps aren't terrible on an iphone, though some feature a lot of screen changes due to the small space available.

Do I prefer using my MacBook and Live? YES But I adore Hexatone for semi-random and/or glitchy drums (or other sounds) loops.

Pretty damn impressive sound I have to agree with that. And besides with today's music gizmos available who knows what today's genious kids will be able to pull off within the next 30 years?
