I'm not fighting Mac, and neither am I dismissing olikana .... his input is useful in perhaps getting a general point across :)

I am not trying to chase olikana away, rather, I want olikana to participate and operate as a part of the OSC community ... and influence/collect support that rather than challenge me directly, will form a body of opinion which will convince me that it is worth following a particular direction ... i'll go there if theres enough of us to have a party, otherwise, I stay with the company I have!

Olikana, you leave me with the feeling you're gonna disappear again ... thats up to you. But, whilst I said I've better things to do than give you links to defend my position, or prove anything, I also have had a load of very worthwhile stuff that I've put on hold to go 'head to head' with you here. I hope you can fathom that it's because I actually value your input that I've done this, and that I would value your input more if you could find it in yourself to have a little patience, perhaps submit a track using a synth that was not in your personal top 3, submit a few votes, and generally give us a bit of support sometimes on issues that we need another voice or two.

you are right, i will disappear again. but this time i'm sure i brought my idea forward for a future "any one synth" OSC (osc16?).
if there'll ever be one...c u then. :)

OK, true to my word, your still here olikana, so I will say ....

The 'any one synth challenge' is an excellent idea!

but... I am committed to running the comps as to date governed by the input of the fluctuating majority ... and until that FM changes its flux, the choice of future featured synths will be led be the 'loser' of previous comps ... and I can do no more.

So, going back to my post encouraging others to run alternative comps, with my willing support, olikanas idea is as good as any ... all that is required is someone who has the time and energy to run it! .... I will def submit a track!

PMd Meffy re OSC specialist thread. :)

My suggestion: JBM Jagular since it has an aweful amount of functions, synthesis methodes, filters and stuff like that. Just my cent here.
Best regards from Johan Brodd.

dwsel wrote:My votes are up in voting thread ;) Right now, after reading your suggestions and ideas I'm narrowing synth choice to de la Mancha basic http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2946.html or Krakli's StringZ http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2059.html so you can test and choose from one of these :D
Although I quite like chipsounds, I'll go for the string synth as I've been quite hooked to UGO's String Theory lately and where my Synth1 entry started. I just ported the start part to Synth1, but for once found it lacking as it wasn't able to reproduce the lovely plucked strings as in ST, maybe StringZ has similar sounds.

B. Serrano's Anubis:

A bit of a step down from Synth1.

That's subjective ;-)

Yes, of course, but do you really think that Anubis is as good as (or better than) Synth1?

A couple of objective differences: the delay on Anubis is a single, mono mode, chorus is one mode with only one control parameter, there's no phaser, no arpeggiator, no fm. And 10,000+ patches vs. 60 or so?

Also, routing a fast env to pitch sweep a sine osc should produce a decent kick - I can only get a weak, flabby thump that varies in volume considerably from one note to the next.

Subjectively: to my ears Anubis sounds boxy, weak and ill defined in the bottom end, harsh and unpleasant at the top - I find it very fatiguing to listen to at anything but low levels. There seems to be a lot of energy being produced outside of the desired freq range - eg. a patch that doesn't sound all that loud can still be pushing the levels into clipping. The user definable env, a nice idea and Anubis' only distinguishing feature, is so fiddly as to be almost unusable.

Anyway, sorry for sounding negative, that wasn't my intention, more expressing a POV. And, after all, the 'C' in 'OSC' stands for 'Challenge' and this will certainly be more of a challenge than last time. :hihi:

That will be my short answer to your comprehensive post.

I agree that you agree :hihi:

A related point I'd quite like to see more synths of the Synth1 mould i.e. the well regarded, really high quality plugins. Not every OSC, but, in amongst the quirkier, more esoteric offerings, there should be room for them now and then.

It's already been mentioned, but I'd really like to see Tal Elec7ro - maybe OSC16/17?

Agree, and also that it's quite a challenge to get something out of to fit the bill of the comp. The danger is that one has to use a ton of effects to make it sound sweet to in many ways become an effects challenge which is maybe not the idea here, but imo nothing wrong with that either - I've learned just as much (or maybe more) about effect usage than synth usage with these quirky synths.
