Audio-Technica ATH-M50 is hands down the best choice of all the headphones mentioned here. It's one of the greatest price/performance ratio headphones ever made, and it close enough to accurate/neutral that I'd use it to mix with if required to. It's also one of the few headphones that actually reproduces sub-bass well, instead of being rolled off too soon.

Denon AH-D2000 is supposedly even better, but it doesn't seal as well--it's more like semi-closed.

How do you like the bass. Another common comment is about the reliability (seems quite a lot have to be returned or stop working in a few years). Any problems?

To me the bass sounds just right. When they're brand new it even sounds a bit too bassy sometimes. But well, i like bass :)
I had my first pair for about 5 years then the left side started to crackle whenever low frequencies came in. (Daily use!)
My second pair is now almost 4 years old again. So far it works nicely.

Here's a good closed headphone. AKG 272's for sale here.
Only used a few hours, for half the price of the originals.

When I get a chance to demo in store I'll check them out. I'm not totally keen on the second hand option but they do look/read like a good option.

How do the Shure's compare to yours? Which of yours is the best? I use the Shure E4's and love them for general listening but my Sony V900's have more natural sounding bass with deeper extension.
You should write to Shure and ask them who did the design and manufacturing for their first entries into the in-ear monitor market; whether it was in-house or not. If you get a answer from Shure, it will be an interesting response.

From what I can gather on websites, the E4 model uses a single balanced armature driver at a $299 price point.

Our Westone 2 model is at a $249 price point and employs a true 2-way, 2 driver balanced armature design. The Westone 3 model is a true 3-way, 3 driver design at the $399 price point.

Send me a PM if you have more questions.

Regarding wireless - any of our monitors can plug into wireless monitor systems with the standard 1/8" stereo plug. Regarding a blue-tooth like system for wireless and low latency for monitoring, there isn't yet a desirable system for this purpose - latencies are too high for the encoding/decoding of the digital data stream.

Yes Sennheiser have some digital wireless headphones and they boast about the 25 msec latency which makes them useless for musical performance monitoring. I think it would be pretty cool if some company like RME got into a partnership with one of these companies like Sennheiser or Shure to do this - really low latency high quality radio monitoring with a high quality DAC. Line 6 are getting into it I believe - don't know about the latency there though.

That's surprising to hear! Would you mind giving an in-depth comparison?
I think it's hard to explain without it being "subjective" on my end

One thing about the AT's is that they seem more focused. The instruments seem able to be isolated. There is a lost feeling with the 770's imo. Now the beyers are flatter, no question. As a matter of fact there is actually quite a bit more high end. But they are hyper separated so after some time I start feeling eveything is mushing together. I can listen to the AT's and feeling more like I can hear the individual parts better. Honestly though, you can drive yourself nuts a/b ing (my soundcard has two headphone jacks so that helps) Get comfy with either one and be done with it, if you know what I mean!

On the comfort side I'd rate them both very comfortable and I seriously doubt there is anything "wrong" with either. The beyers do win in the isolation department as they fit all the way around the ear. But I've got my AT's on all time.....I think I feel more like they are not there than the beyers.

Thanks for the review, hibidy! I've used the Beyers quite a bit so detailing them against one another like that really gave me a clear understanding.

I use hd25 and these are the best closed ones I have tried so far. They lack some sparkling magic compared to open high end phones but then again they are portable, unbreakable, sensitive, and you can play crazy loud with them. Probably only akg makes better closed ones. If you plan to dj with the phones these are the best ones, and there is really no competition whatsoever in that field, un-break-a-ble as opposed to sonys/whoevers crap.
