Alright so in honor of Genesis making the Hall of Fame tonight I will give a summary of cool Genesis-related experiences I've had being a fan since I was a kid.

1. In 1996-97 Genesis had announced they were looking for a new drummer to replace Phil Collins. Out of curiosity I checked on line to see who people were suggesting and it was silly (like Ringo or Don Henley) so I posted "How about Nick D'Virgilio? He can play like Phil and tours with Tears for Fears, totally qualified..." and I accidentally posted to this newsgroup 10 times hitting the send button over and over because I didn't think it was showing up... then they all showed up! (Squids first spamming). Everyone was pissed at me saying "Who's that?" However, apparently Nick Davis (Genesis co-producer/engineer) saw the post and when Nick D'Virgilio asked for an audition Nick Davis actually remembered the post! They both told me later. NDV got to play on a bunch of tracks on that album... which must have been a thrill for him. Ironically the OTHER drummer on that album, Nir Z, does some stuff for Toontrack! Small world. Anyway, that's how I became friends with Nick Davis which led to a visit to The Farm to watch him mix Genesis box sets in 5.1 (amazing) and an eventual sample session of all of their instruments but I will get to that.

2. More than just stories, if you want to watch some videos go here http://www.sonicreality.tv

3. One of the coolest things was being invited to watch Genesis rehearsals in NYC at SIR in 2007. Up until the time I came there it seemed there was a chance it was going to be the original 5 members including Gabriel and Hackett. So I was REALLY nervous because Geoff, Tony's tech, wouldn't tell me one way or another. I found out by walking right in and seeing Chester and Darryl and the whole band looking at me while they were playing. Before that I had previously met Tony Banks and Chester Thompson but never Mike or Phil (despite the fact that Mike loves R.A.W. loops and IK/SR software!). But, it was during rehearsals that I became friends with Phil's son Simon who I later collaborated with on several songs (including one called "Big Bang" which I believe is the last song or one of the last with Phil Collins drumming... and like the old days too. Sounds like something off Duke meets something sort of trance I suppose... I did the quirky synths and sound design... in fact I used our new Cinema Sessions quite a bit for the orchestral effects... you can hear that track on our myspace page http://www.myspace.com/sonicreality as well as the cover I did with Simon of "Keep it Dark" ).

4. Being friends with Simon was an instant ticket to getting up close in ways I would never otherwise dare intrude (no pun intended for those that know). One was at rehearsal walking right up to Phil and Chester while they were playing and standing right behind him watching every hit. That you can actually see in the videos on our SRTV page or on youtube But then the same thing live in concert backstage. Just walking right up! However, the coolest thing was actually driving TO and FROM the New Jersey concert in Phil's van. Just tagging along. After the concert I got to give him a critique of the show. Pretty cool huh?

Now, I know some of you may even be bigger Rush, Peter Gabriel, Steely Dan or other artist fans and could argue that it'd be even cooler to have done a sample session with a Neil Peart or Billy Cobham or Jerry Marotta or any of the other incredible players in the series. I don't mean to put Phil or Genesis on a pedestal or anything. It is more of a childhood dream coming to life for me. The WHOLE THING is really... as you can imagine. But these experiences in particular are ones I already think back upon with a smile. I'm grateful to have had that opportunity and just in time because who knows what is happening -if anything - with those guys?

In any case, congrats to Genesis for being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. It's about time. Now if we can only get Ken Scott inducted under the producer category... what does a guy have to do? Think about it. He recorded The Beatles White Album and Magical Mystery Tour, he recorded and/or produced Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Elton John, Pink Floyd, America, Procol Harum, Lou Reed, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Supertramp, Dixie Dregs, Missing Persons, Duran Duran, Devo, Happy the Man, George Harrison... that's not enough? To top it off he recorded CLASSICS like "Rocket Man" or "Helter Skelter" or the LAST song Floyd did with Syd Barrett and the first song with Gilmour... if anyone deserves to be inducted in that category you'd think he'd be on the list! But you'd be surprised at how picky they are. Anyway, that's a whole other story. Meanwile the Squids Mega Post is back!!!!!! A sign of good health. ;)

It could be the Blues kit
I'm on the page with all the other MT kits, but don't see the Blues kit. Where is it?

Thanks.

Thanks. Sounds great. I thought maybe the Gottlieb or Greene kit might be thrown in as choices. I like the hats in the Gottlieb kit and the snare in the Greene kit.

And finally, for anyone curious about some bits recorded at the SR studio in Miami for a potential "band"-oriented project with Simon Collins on drums and vocals, myself on Keys and some fellow prog-pop rock chaps... I posted a medley edit called "New Stuff" on our myspace page which will be there temporarily for those that are curious to hear it. If anything, listen to the drums. I sampled Simon's kit which was a cool Premier set with a fat snare. We used Telefunken tube mics as overheads which were really nice and different. I also had a Ball and Biscuit mic as an extra room for those that know what THAT is! Anyway... back to the group buy.

freaking wow! that 'new stuff' sounds great !
I certainly hope more of that sees the light o' day !

The key to having the variety (besides just for the fun of the variety of kits for inspiration) is to be able to swap kit pieces to make just the RIGHT kit for any musical situation you may be in. This is true production power! You're producing a song and you're thinking "man, I need a snare that goes POP! or PING!" and you dig through your collection and come across one that hits the nail on the head. Then you grab the ultimate kick... with STm kits anyway it is all about the hybrid kits.
Thanks for saying what my mind was thinking and trying to say.... "overlap" was the wrong choice of wording :-o

In swapping the pieces, using the snare as you said for example, my question then is for instance on OWD Kit 10 Dry STm, you change the snare with OWD Kit 4 Dry STm snare by going to the instruments on the Infinite Player and selecting it? That said you would delete the old snare in the rack, right? but could you as well stack the snares too for a bigger sound?

"Here is an interactive manual/tutorial on the features and interface of Drum Masters 2 Signature Kits. Feel free to ask any questions (that's the interactive part)."...... I can't tell you how many times I went back to that manual. As a matter of fact I copied it and usually if I have a question It's my go to! I forget where it is so Squids you might want to tell these guys where it because it is extremely valuable :D

Did you post the 2nd part yet? "That concludes the first part of the tour! I hope this was useful to you. If you have any questions about any of the above just let me know. Let's try to keep this thread just about "how it works" and not general discussion which can be done in other threads. This is an experiment in "interactive manual/tutorials" that we've been talking about doing. Accompanying this WILL be some screen-capture video tutorials as well which will help explain certain processes step by step - including some of the ones described in this thread."

I have bought into both group buys, and now I am considering getting some better edrums to play the sounds with. (I currently have a very cheap ION drum kit that I bought from craigslist to practice on.) But I don't have a lot of money to spend. Any recommendations on what to get? Like I said, don't have a lot of money to spend, so I want to get the best bang (no pun intended) out of my buck. I don't really care about the sounds that come with the edrums, since I will midi them up to my computer to play the group buy sounds. But good midi-triggering therefore matters more. What are you e-drummers out there using? thanks!
what exactly is your budget? the high end roland stuff the td-12 and td-20 are the only modules that have positional sensing i.e can detect your playing in the center moving to the outside of the snare and switch samples accordingly. but i think the cheapest you can get the td-12 would be around 3000 still. so roland wise you have the td-9 and the td-4 which are pretty decent bang for the buck compared to their older stuff. the main difference for you since you are using internal sounds is that the td-9 has a few extra trigger inputs and the td-4 is limited to kick, dual snare, 3 toms, ride and crash and maybe has one extra avail for another tom or crash. the 9 has a few extra. the td-4 starts around 1000.00 in the states and they go up a little if you want all mesh toms.
to be honest, not a hundred percent clear what my budget will be. but unfortunately i won't be able to spend 3000+ US dollars.... maybe i can spend up to 1000$, but i doubt even that. is it not even worth upgrading to, e.g., a 600-800$ kit? thanks for all the advice!
I have been playing the drums from the first GB on my new Alesis USB Pro kit, these are great E-drums, I could not justify buying rolands, every piece of the kit has 2 way triggers, the ride is real cool how you can go from rim to bell!

Hi Jerrydee, that's good to hear. Can I send you a private message asking you more about the kit and how it works with the groupbuy drums? I don't want to derail the thread too much here. (Or should I ask it here so that other people who might be interested have the info? don't know the etiquette of these things. thanks!)
