for the record, this is not a loaded question, just curiosity. Im not asking to get a reference point for my own work. Im not planning on making and selling soundbanks. Im just curious, so dont let the fact it is me asking influence your reply ;)

so, here is the deal:

what would you consider a reasonable price for a bank of 128 sounds for a soft synth. Not a set of samples or samples/presets, just straight up preset sounds for a synth you use...and lets assume you like the demo of the soundbank and would like to buy it (not a shit bank, obviously)

thank you for your time :)

For 128 really good sounds £15 max.

That's me, and how much I'd part with for a synth soundset...

Post

For 128 sounds i'm happy to pay £10-15 too.

-$10

They pay me ten bucks to use their set of ears instead of mine I guess.

it kinda depends on the synth i guess.
for a top of the range, everybody has it synth id expect to pay less than for a more underground synth that fewer people have.
the reasoning is thus... it would be far easier to find banks for a major player so the market would require some competition (although of course if your sounds are so out of this world and original then you are going to be able to push that aspect).

it would also depend on the sound designer in question too i guess, if someone has a good reputation (not a big name) then im more likely to be willing to part with the higher scale than if its some guy who ive barely heard of or has little experience, not so much in designing but having a portfolio i could check.

although, its all irrelavant anyway for me as id rather just programme stuff myself as and when i need it, i think if i bought a bank of presets id have to use eac and every one to make sure i get my moneys worth :hihi:

i would say roughly 10 - 20, 10 for more average leads and such 20 for WOW! sounds that no one else is producing.

ps: any that use some genre affiliation ie 128 trance/industrial/house etc... will deserve a slap and nil poi!

I'd say up to £15 depending on the plug-in they are for and how useable the sounds are.

Yeah ! I'd be curious to know too :)

I'll let people express themselves then I'll give you some data, and eventually my own Pov.

Now just for information a single fact : A 128 presets bank, depending on the complexity of the synth will take around 15 days to one month. For a synth like Alchemy it can be worse (as it can be very likely metapresets ie 8 different instruments nested into only one name ) I formerly thought I was just too slow at designing presets, but people like Brok Landers or Himalaya confirmed their average time per preset was about the same than me, if not even worse :hihi: :hihi:

Edit : Btw if some SDs are visiting this thread I'd be curious to know their average time per preset too :o :o

And now I'll let the place to users expectations :)

That 25 us dollar/ 15 euro would be the threshold from where most people seem to feel it in their pockets, so the purchase is no longer a no-brainer and one might feel conflicted over the decision and contemplate regretting it eventually. I guess this goes for simpler plug-ins too.

I would take into account what Lotuzia said above too, as complexity and quality can go a long way. Consider an equivalent of Eric Persing presets for the D-50 back in the day. For 128 sounds, 50 of whatever currency should be fair game. Even more, really.

I guess from the sound designers view point it depends on the plug-in popularity.More sales for a soundset for a popular plug, less for a less popular plug.So to get money back for the time spent designing sounds for a less popular plug-in would require a higher price as less units are likely to be sold.

i know, it's a lot of work to get good sounds, but my limit is about 20€ (and i feel quite tempted with 5 to 10 €). I do my own stuff mostly for myself especially, when i can't find sounds from the presets that fit into a certain song or project. Sometimes i try to do sounds for fun and sometimes i try to do sounds not just for me. What i'd like to have, is a sound pool, where i can choose from a lot of sounds the ones i need. In this case i'd pay more, because i really want/need everything, i get.

128 presets = 10-14 weeks.. Zebra is taking longer (mods XY etc) iv'e been on the same preset now since about 3pm today so that's 7 and a half hours now to get the sound i want..so for a preset i.e Bass sound about 30 mins and Modulated stuff sometimes hours on end for just the one preset.

The audio demos are the fun part at the end of the long preset programming and take about 6 hours tops.

An audio demo..this can make or break a new soundset..

You asked i answered :)

30 mins on a bass sound? :o

Yes :) Is that too long :D I should have mentioned that the 30 mins includes testing the individual preset i.e the Bass preset in a Mix situation (playing with a kick loop etc) and tuning the levels so that there is very little to do for the end user.

Sometimes if it sounds good then i'll bounce the loops down and save it for the audio demo :) saves me doing it at a later date.
