I think all compressors should have a feature where they only effect frequencies below a certain point, mainly so when doing whole drum submixes my cymbals don't disappear whenever the kick attacks, It can be done with a multiband compressor but it could be so much simpler!

Now someone run off and make me one... a good one! :P

Duplicate your audio tracks and then EQ each of them for specific frequencies, then use your regular compressor(s).

uhm how so?
you use the band you need, setting the range of interest with the bandwidth controls and don't use those unneeded bands.
How difficult is that?

Maybe compressors are just too difficult altogether?

how about an eq in the sidechain?

Post

Yeah, that's what sidechaining is for, actually - To filter out the frequencies you don't want to compress. Most compressors have it implemented as HPF and LPFs [high pass, low pass filters].

here is one with this possibility..

NY Compressor by DDMF has a multimode filter (LP, HP, BP).

Compressive has a three band eq and mid/side processing on the sidechain so you can isolate the frequencies you want the compressor to respond to :)

I think all compressors should... be banned

Reacomp (part of the free Reaplugs bundle) has got both highcut and lowcut filters in its detector path - as simple as that...

Post

lemme add it can be easier when it comes to the reaplugs:
the rea x comp is in the free bundle, too. just add 2 bands and compress only the one you would want to be compressed, that easy ... :).

Bit OT, i love the reacomp's but the parameters are so awkward to set with the tabs and everything.

Post

My first thought was a side chain, but it really depends. If he wants to squash the crap out of the kick, but leave the cymbals unmolested then a multi-band would be the only way.
