Would you want Notation in Ableton Live 9?

What I really want is an "EDIT" button for MIDI clips that matches the one for audio clips. Just as the Audio Clip Edit button opens up the clip within a designated Wave Editor, so the MIDI Clip Edit button would open up the MIDI clip in a notation or other programme of your choice. That would be awesome.

btw, i checked my crash logs yesterday and i saw, the worst version was 8.03. 8.11 is quite stable compared to 8.03.

Ableton should fix its immediate problems rather than putting out a product that is useless and doesn't fix Abletons current problems. Adding Max for live was a waste of time and really a waste of resources which didn't fix immediate problems. You guys at Ableton should stop bandaging your live product and make some real improvements.


Ableton needs to fix vst automation and make it more feasible other than pressing record and taking a gamble. You need a sample/wave editor that can do surgical work on samples. Its difficult to use Live 8's barbaric tools when you need to cut and clean up samples. How about a decent midi editor and quantize process that can quantize more than a single midi sequence at a time. Clicking on a single midi loop brace at a time is ridiculous when you can batch quantize in other DAW's. It Would be nice if you guys put in an MP3 encoder so that we could render our work to a mp3. How about putting in Aux and sub buses so that we can do real audio processing in our mix, rather than going to a secondary DAW for it. Ableton needs a better zoom in and zoom out feature, how about being able to move the mixer down to the bottom of the screen for a more conducive work flow. Working with movies in Ableton live 8 is useless, so why not fix its current problems.

How about giving the live community a 64 bit DAW,

IF Ableton 9 isn't a 64 bit DAW you will lose a lot of customers, because live 8 was useless and not worth the upgrade.

I could not care less about notation, but some better midi support would be nice. Or, if not, at least better support for VSTs that generate midi; I would think midi plugins are really simple to write compared to audio VSTs, but using things like EZPlayer, KTDrumTrigger, or S-Matrix require using multiple tracks and other kludges that make it ugly.

And... Live has aux busses? You can have up to 12 IIRC in Live. I don't know of any analog console with more than that. Doesn't have designated subgroups, but of course you can create all you want by simply grouping tracks; then you get a slider that works just like a subgroup. And you can get as many of these as you need. I love that interface actually.

Mixer at bottom of the screen? Click the arrow at the bottom-right of the screen, it hides the instrument panel. Voila... mixer at bottom.

Not picking, hoping this actually helps someone, because it already does some of what you want.

I think traditional notation is an archaic, vastly-overrated "language" (in which I am completely fluent) long overdue for a good broom-sweep out the door and into the alley, where the sanitation engineers can dispose of it at the local incinerator.

Seriously, if they want to pursue _any_ type of notation at any time, then let them try something new and revolutionary. (I personally prefer graphic/MIDI notation where colors play the role of "markings.") Ableton absolutely needs to waste _no_ time on Ye Olde Engraving Engyne.

Is there some real plans developing this feature?
Do you really think Ableton will do this for the 9?
Or are you just asking for fun?

If this is a serious question, my two cents:
Firstly, I think a good notation integrated to the sequencer is a MUST.
I really think that Live should include - in addition to all present"DJ features" also some serious basic music making tools. These are e.g. MIDI editor based on the staves and a good notation module.
We all don't like to edit music with a rather childish piano keyboard type editor but using the traditional staves and notes. Both should be option.
Secondly, I the previous can be done either by the Ableton inside the Live OR
by offering a good third party notation developer link (and terms for bying that), e.g. the Sibelius. Live 9 + Sibelius could be great.

I would give my vote for the second option.

I own Cubase, Logic and Live and the only one I use is Live. It's my Digital Audio 'Workhorse'

The only things I want in Live 9 are...
1. Pitch Manipulation - correction and repitching - Like a simple integrated melodyne.
The timestreching tools can get so creative when abused - I'd love the ability to mess with pitch more.
2. A way to reorganise all my AUs into meaningful folders like 'compressors', 'EQs', 'synths', etc.
3. MP3 export!

you can do 2 now on PC - just make any folder structure you want and drag shortcuts in instead of dlls... probably possible on osx to do same with aliases but havent tried.

for 3 export as wav and use lamedrop free and done already.

and for 1 - if only they would let you automate/control detune, you'd have half of that (wouldn't have the automatic pitch detection/correction, but don't think that's what you were asking about anyways). maybe it will be soon.

Ableton Live AFAIK was designed for Live performance. To be used by DJ's especially. If you worked in notation you would most probably be using Sibelus or DP. I don't see any one using notation in a loop based host. You would most likely want something a little more linear.
