Just as the Audio Clip Edit button opens up the clip within a designated Wave Editor, so the MIDI Clip Edit button would open up the MIDI clip in a notation or other programme of your choice. That would be awesome.
great idea! :love:

btw, i checked my crash logs yesterday and i saw, the worst version was 8.03. 8.11 is quite stable compared to 8.03. :hihi:
Yeah, great idea. But... what would you edit MIDI clips with? Another DAW?

No notation please. It would be cool to have, but like pretty much everyone here is saying, the Abes need to fix the bugs and add functionality that is missing from Live that is so crucial to many. Some I can think of at the moment:

[1] they should add snap-to-grid functionality to envelope points! (this one is so irritating. I've been requesting this since 2007);
[2] automation curves;
[3] the tempo automation envelope feels so unstable, specially since it is missing automation point snap-to-grid;
[4] no render to mp3??? the rendering options need an overhaul;
[5] wouldn't a button for pre-count in the transport section be handy? why do we have to open the preference menu every time we need to access pre-count?

[/list]

i'd like to have a piano roll in a seperate window with some facilities:
- reverse highlighted notes and/or velocity curves
- chord creation without midi effects
- strumming chords
- overlapping notes

Specific notation software such as Sibelius/Finale/etc. I'm not sure another DAW would work (technically), and can't imagine Ableton wanting to encourage that anyway!

I agree with all five points in your list... +5

One more thing to add to my list: the ability to change values of automation points numerically.

Anyway, it is little things like these that Ableton should concentrate on.

i would, for shure. not the sharpest of wishes, but i think better with a traditional score than with the piano roll.

@SOphist, I'm not trying to be an asshole, but I'm curious: why did you choose Live instead of another full fledge DAW??

Post

good question!... i don't really know... i went for ease of use and it's (then) slightly angular ethos. then i got the live-bug and, afterwards, was to lazy to try and learn another DAW from scratch. but i'm tempted.

Cheers!

I wouldn't mind being able to (or i would kill to in other words :lol: ) use VST/VSTi plug-ins whilst using Live as a Rewire slave - That would make it just perfect for me personally

Anyway just my thoughts on the matter

Chroma what your claiming Ableton doesn't do at all

"Mixer at bottom of the screen? Click the arrow at the bottom-right of the screen, it hides the instrument panel. Voila... mixer at bottom."

What I mean is being able to have the mixer at the bottom with the arrangement panel out. Not clicking on the session view and having the mixer drop down,

The return sends are a little archaic than proper sub and aux buses, I'm not sure what you can do with those return buses. Proper Sub and aux buses can stereo pan and mix properly. What you claim Ableton can do, it cannot do because a real aux and sub bus can do a little more than Abletons return panels which I have mixed with and barely use.

Ableton does not have a proper mix engine to mix in,

Live has pretty good routing. Use Audio Tracks or Groups.
Label them as you wish (such as MyOwnBusX). You can also route returns back to Audio Tracks if you really want.
The mixing engine is quite smooth. Sadly, automation isn't.

What's the point of this thread anyway when Live doesn't even support proper midi editing? Then wanting notation in this p.o.s software that's "developed" to the point where it can't even handle the most basic use anymore with the only continuous element in the workflow being total crashage?

OK, I see what you mean. You want arrangement view, with a normal mixer panel. That's reasonable, and not there, I agree.

I'm really not sure what you mean here? Ableton's submix and aux busses can certainly do stereo panning. I'm not sure what you'd want them to do that they don't already do. They are just like a regular channel, as far as I can tell, and if you want them in a regular channel, you can do that too - even post FX, to separate the actual effects from post-FX EQ, for example.

Abletons engine/returns lack mono in and out mixing, lacks phasing on tracks and buses. It lacks linking of tracks and buses for proper track movement. Most DAWs allow you to send audio to the same aux more than once and pipe it on mono or stereo aux busses. Linking of tracks/ buses are another necessity when track counts become large.

Ableton lacks surround track and aux/sub buss panning.

I could go on and on about the problems with its audio engine and returns.

Mind you, Ableton is the only product I use for pre production, but I would never think of using it for anything other than pre production and it is sold as a pre production piece of software.

Rabbit I meant it figuratively not literally.

Do you know anyone on KVR at all?

I will put some of my work up just for you Kmeister, I use to sell rap and R&B beats but went back to college to finish my Associate in Business Management and haven't been doing it as much as I use to.

I am working on a project with my brother on a few things so I will put up some of my new music that I have been working on up.

Kmeister I like that you are interested, I will certainly put my stuff up so you can enjoy some of my music or critique it.
