i call this piece piece because that's what it is ... a:

piece

it's an "exercise" in pitch/rhythmic gridlessness (no scales, meters, periodic pulses, etc.) and nonrepetitiveness (no looping/echoing).

Interesting to hear classic synth sounds from you Rick. Yes, there is some earth-moving low end! Great stereo field as always. I love that grainy almost vocal sound the way it teases. Top stuff.

yes, i worked hard to get the bass up in the mix without redlining it. tried compression, but it didn't work (the bass samples are all time-stretched and reverbed to simulate longer decays, and any type of compression i used caused undesired artifacts to appear: wobbling, clicks, etc.). so i ended up by eq-ing, boosting the frequencies from about 50-200 hz.

would love your opinion:

is the bass too high in the mix? i want it to be strong and present, but not at the expense of the whole. ditto for the other three layers, melody, pad, groove: is the balance good?

I don't like ! I don't have any feeling about these sounds.
I must listen and learn more. Try to understand or feel.

But there's a very interesting way. A job very precise.

daniel: thanks for the honest response. :-) i'm sorry you don't like the piece. i have been listening to sounds like these (and much much noise-ier) for a long time, they are very familiar to me. but i realize that i am in the minority. last night my girlfriend told me that some of my pieces (not this one, others that are more crazily percussive and glitchy-sounding) physically hurt her ears, whereas to me they sound beautiful. i say: to each his/her own.

ok, I have to say that I like this very very much, <grin>, the chrisp sounds and the sweeps are nicely mixed and the explorative mood is entertaining, my only critiques could be about the use of echo which is "standard" compared to the quality of the whole track, also I could notice a little of conceptualism of the past century which is typical of you IMHO, not that it's bad but I feel that side somehow stiffly anchored to the past. Anyway as I said those a picky critiques, <wink>
