Yes, that wasn't my point. It was the "They've just decided to make it unavailable" thing that cracked me up. Only a brainwashed applehead doesn't see how that's A-1 stupid. I use Spotify instead of the ipod app for music, but that doesn't play in the background, so because of my choice which makes me avoid itunes as much as possible I can't listen to music while browsing. Nice. Thanks a lot. What the f**k does it matter that the iPhone COULD HAVE multitasked?

Of course the apple convert would say that I'm stupid for not letting the unique user experience wash over me.
I really like the iPhone, and like I said I understand the point of having a bigger one, but to go from there to where this thread has gone in terms of how unique, futuristic, game-changing the ipad is, is ridiculous.

The best thing about the ipad will probably be that students won't have to carry huge text books anymore. This feature, like most others, it shares with all other tablets.

PS: personally I dont like the elitist, closed box bussiness model from Apple, but I dont worry because in a few months there will be plenty of Android tablets, but that dont stop me from seeing the iPad as a possible game changer.

He didn't say it was a plus, he was succinctly refuting the lame argument that iPhone OS isn't OS X because it can't multitask. It can, and does.

while it can it is only the iphone part that can (and maybe some of the apple apps although I don't remember which - I don't have an iphone anymore)but as far as I remember they are usually task switching

jailbroken phones can have 2 apps open in the background but they do not keep running in the background

So if you switch from a game to another app and go back to the game it is at exactly the same place you left it - i.e. task switching - true multitasking like various tablets phones etc have for all apps only exists for the ipod

So you won't be able to run a sequencer and a sampler at the same time - unless it's in iphone OS 4 (which it wouldn't surprise me if it was - it is the obvious deficit in the system)

So about the apps, some of them seem like OK time wasters, but I thought the same about beatmaker and noise.io for the phone, both of which are less than useful and I might as well just delete them off the phone.
For actual work, I'd choose a laptop. For reading websites this is probably a great thing, for playing piano choose a piano.

Actually it's not OSX at all, it's called the PhoneOS. Not even anywhere near the same code. OSX runs on Intel processors, PhoneOS runs on ARM processors. Because the Apple A4 processor is a SOC (System on a chip) and at it's core is a ARM processor the iPad has a lot more in common with my Palm than my Tablet PC.

Sorry tom, have to pull you up there. OSX only runs on Z80, not Intel CPUs. :p

It's "based on". It's like WinCE to WinXP. Not really the same.

Just a few thoughts, perhaps an additional drop or two of chum to drop between the dueling sharks.

1) WRT to processor power, have we forgotten where the whole MIDI-on-computers thing really took off? On an Atari ST, which had less power than a Nintendo DS. Yet amazing things were done on that equipment. No, it wasn't running VSTs (which didn't exist), and wouldn't have had the power to do so, but it was still extremely useful. So let's say that maybe the iPad has the power to run some kinds of musical software, but not others. Obviously, it isn't gonna run Massive, or Omisphere, but that doesn't mean, in itself, that there won't be any use for the iPad. It all comes down to developer and user creativity, doesn't it?

2) For those who scorn the notion of judging the merits of the iPhone/iPod Touch by the number of people using it, don't forget the network effect. The more people use the device, the more developers work on the device, the more competition there is to take advantage of the device, thus the better the apps become over time. Pro Tools is great, but it would be considerably less great if a lot less people used it because there would be a lot less in the way of upgrades/improvements/enhancements and third-party apps for it.

3) Yes, Apple is brilliant at marketing, and no, it does not target "power users." But, then, I was an x86 power user in the early 90s, and that consisted of constantly effing around with DOS commands just to get simple hardware like a CD-ROM drive working. Sometimes it's nice not to have to be a power user to get things done.

All notable but ipad dosnt offer anything new. Id say that if you got one for browsing the net etc - all well and good but as a musicians tool - no. Id buy a controller, which I already have, with REAL knobs at half the price of ipad.
