my opinion on the GUI is around here somewhere, as for the sound, havent heard it yet..and wouldnt know if it was a good emualtion or not...might be a crap emulation but still sound great, no idea.SWAN808 wrote:whats your opinion on Polykb so far?Kriminal wrote:must be worth a fortune..well, they were until the 'best ever' VST version was made and made them redundantwhyterabbyt wrote:you've owned most of the 30 real polyKBs that were made? wow.states wrote:as a matter of fact, i do own most of them.

if they do a dongle free version i'll prob try it, but i cant see that hapeneing any time soon...or were you implying somethig else?
not really in the market for another synth (especially with low spec like this)

I would love to demo it, (I just requested the demo) but I got an email saying it takes up to 3 business days for the ilok asset to be deposited!

ok.. i'm indeed comparing the PolyKB to the GForce, Arturia, SonicP and U-he stuff. and to my ears the bare oscillator sounds are incredibly fat and convincing! much closer to what an analogue machine would sound like. the truth ? yes, i have had experience with the real Kobol back in the mid to late 80's and the one thing that i do emphatically remember is the waveform sweeps. to my mind/memory & ears Xavier's emu sounds extremely close to what i remember from it ! but, you have to d/l the demo and judge for yourselves. geniune sounding or not what comes out of this contraption is imho magnificent !

I'm qualified to compare the PolyKB to analogs; my first analog was an Arp Axxe!
http://www.vintagesynth.com/arp/axxe.php
Owned and played a lot of keyboard instruments, I've been into hardware synths for 30+ years; the digital stuff definately just keeps getting better and better...
Speaking of which: Anybody heard the latest Waldorf Blofeld stuff? OS 1.15 was just released concurrently with 128 new patches...IMO it now gives the Virus TI platform a run for it's money.
But it took a while.
Just like software synths.
OK, specific to this topic: PolyKB compares very favorably with WOW's TimeWARP 2600, my personal soft synth watermark. It sounds really good while offering a lot of sound-design potential; it also can be 'broken' in a realistically analogish way producing all the mayhem expected from 'circuits gone wild'.
I'll leave it at that; the joy of this forum is the diversity of thought-provoking opinion!

shame i don't have the TimeWARP ... i too have been using analogue synths since the very early 80's, so i do get a bit pissed when i receive the 'KVR treatment'.. come on now, this ain't the Steinberg board, so some people ought to relax a bit !

I believe that this past Christmas, Wayoutware put Timewarp & kickAxxe on sale as a download-only bundle for a 30% discount. They may do it again this year, since I believe they did something similiar in 2008 (when I got mine....)
I would love to get your opinion on their clone....I personally think that it sounds really messy (in a good sort-of analog way).

Im a big analogue fan and have a OB8 and Moog Source myself - and I concur that the WOW timewARP is one of the best analogue emulations...only the filter aint quite got that bite and the low end is not so convincing in that low-mid thickness of analogue. But the Osc are very nice and it has some of that crazyness...really impressive what that guy achieved...I always sing its praises...
OP-X and Soniccore/Scope Minimax being the other 2 hot ones...OP-X still slightly sharp, clean and sterile-but everything about it is great-just not quite got that movement, and Minimax-wow so close-but again-not having the low-mid thump of a real Mini...I sold mine in the end...
Really keen to hear this PolyKb but left my iLok at my studio and away for the bank holiday weekend...

yeah, i knew about the WoW sale but i sort of had other priorities at that time, unfortunately.. i wish i could someday get it as well ! i've heard so much about it !
as for the PolyKb... it's the second day that i'm frantically coming up with all sorts of early depeche and jarre-equinoxe' s&h and arpeggio patches !!! what an incredible and unique sounding instrument !!

great news for Mac users as previously the OP-X was the only top quality polyphonic emulation IMO but not OSX and perhaps the PolyKB will join it...and be available for Mac of course...(OP-X Reaktor version isnt so good)...

Wow, Swan808! Thanks for sharing...that's what I'm talking about!SWAN808 wrote:Im a big analogue fan and have a OB8 and Moog Source myself - and I concur that the WOW timewARP is one of the best analogue emulations...only the filter aint quite got that bite and the low end is not so convincing in that low-mid thickness of analogue. I want a Voyager; I just can't justify it, especially because I'm seeing relatively inexpensive polyphonic hardware like the Virus TI Snow and Waldorf Blofeld evolving so much....
It's friggin' awesome when a company builds (1) platform, and then sticks with it...updating it as the company figures stuff out/responds to customer feedback. That's what I really like about both Access and Waldorf.
But IMO, Voyager is the coolest-looking synth on the planet, by far...end of subject. What other keyboard offers us a choice of LED colors?
WAY classy.
Further: As much as I like Korg, what I've been seeing them doing for a while is rebuilding the Triton...I got a Classic; it doesn't sound any worse then my M3 even though Korg claims that the M3 is a 'chip' version of the Oasys.
OK.....Well......
I think that we all fall prey to marketing; and with me anyway: it's all about because I WANT to believe the hype.
So, back to a question that's at least a derivitive of the present subject: When all is said and done, is it REALLY worth 3 grand to get a Voyager as opposed to a Studiologic keyboard hooked up to a dedicated quad-core audio computer running polyKB, ACE, TimeWARP, and say: Largo?
It's funny: I've been into this %^&* for a long time; and still don't have anything approaching a definite answer.
Hey, states! TW2.6K is WELL worth the price of admission IMO! I should also pass on that the version hasn't been updated in a while because it runs pretty darn stable across the board; and it needs a fair amount of horsepower while limiting polyphony because the rendering quality is so high.states wrote:yeah, i knew about the WoW sale but i sort of had other priorities at that time, unfortunately.. i wish i could someday get it as well ! i've heard so much about it !

But if I was forced to work JUST with the Timewarp on a synth-sound based music production, I could probably fool a lot of people into believing that I was
A.) Working with an actual analog synth; and/or
B.) Working with more then (1) thing.
I personally think it's that good; but I'll probably never have the opportunity to prove it.
