Question for S1 users:
Can you drag and drop the order of inserts?
What about the order of tracks/mixer channels?

In S1 you can drag and drop almost anything to move it around including mixer tracks, tracks in the arrange view and fx - which can be dragged from one track to another even.

Like Reaper kinda jumped directly to the front of the pack with it's superior unlimited routing and easy/logical track/stem rendering early on, Studio One similarly is on an entirely different level when it comes to the - totality - of it's two-way drag/drop functionality.

This is one case where the marketing isn't hype. In this particular area it has no equal among major hosts. That won't last very long though, I'll give it 12-18 months or so and you'll see a lot of those more clever things start popping up everywhere.

And they will all claim it's revolutionary and that it sets them apart.

Tracktion started the idea, and Studio One took it to the level that Tracktion never got to. And it's a fantastic way of working. I would be on board full time if a few other things got implemented. Some big things, granted, but still.

Yeah... :hihi: Using words like "Revolutionary" might be a bit of a stretch.

But the idea that it (in that one particular case drag/drop) goes far beyond the typical (overall) isn't really hype. But point taken... ad writers tend to write with superlatives. :hihi:

Nuendo 5 will be "unprecedented" (again) I'm sure... and 30% better...

Don't get me wrong. I think Studio One takes drag and drop to bigger levels, and there ARE unique and even partially revolutionary aspects to how it works. I'm absolutely a fan! I just mentioned that Tracktion unfortunately never fully utilized the idea.

I 100% agree that the hype around the Studio One drag and drop system is justified. I love it. I just have a feeling that those who "copy" those ideas will try to make it seem original or like some kind of breakthrough.

Brent... if you keep acting so damn rational and logical you'll eventually be permanently banned from the Inter-webs. :hihi:

Consider yourself on report.

It will be "invented" by Apple with Logic 9.2 :D

Peace,
Andy.

And probably will come with a pep rally launch event with thousands of screaming fans dressed in brushed metal gray with money in hand.

Well, Reaper never got me thinking about switching from Cubase.
I'm almost certainly going to take the leap with S1. And I've been using Cubase since 3.05 (real 3.05, not Cubase SX 8 ). So this was a difficult decision to come to. But I've got to do something, since my ASIO meter is choking at 80%, while my i7 CPU meters are't even breaking a sweat at 30%. Steinberg is advertising that Cubase 5.5 optimizes CPU performance on multicore systems, but I have a feeling the 80/30 problem isn't what they're talking about, since they won't acknowledge it is a serious problem for a lot of users. Plus, I just can't wait for 3 months to be able to get any benefit out of my new DAW, and until version 6 for a single window interface. With Windows 7, Cubase is all taskbar now! I'm going to be getting a new Presonus interface soon anyways, so dropping $200 for a Studio One Pro upgrade is a pretty good deal.

I'm hoping that the fact that Studio One was made by the same guys that developed Nuendo and the VST3 spec means that it should be a smooth transition from Cubase. Which does bring up another question:

What file format does S1 use for VST plugins?
Is it .vstpreset, .fxp, or their own format?

Post

I wanted to edit my list. This was where S1 is deficient compared with Cubase 5 WRT my workflow with some comments.

Variaudio/Melodyne-like pitch correction -- 3rd party application can achieve this (i.e. Melodyne)

A built-in convolution reverb -- 3rd party applications available

Audio quantize -- Cubase currently only has single-track audio quantize, but multi-track is expected in Cubase 6 (we hope). I don't really need this, but others do, and I'd like to have it available when I inevitably do need it. This is something that is really needed w/i the host application itself. I'd say it ought to be the next priority for S1.

Score editor -- 3rd party applications available.

Drum map -- No real workaround if you need it. I don't need it because I use Battery 3 fine, but again, it'd be nice.

MIDI sends -- I have Kore 2, so this is no longer necessary for me, though nice to have.

VST Expression -- Haven't used it, and Kontakt 3 has something similar, but I listed it because it's a plus for Cubase.

Input Transformer -- Handy, but can wait

MIDI Inserts, MIDI Modifiers -- Nice to have when needed.

So, what I think is that no individual feature in Cubase is far beyond S1, it's the totality of the feature set that is nice. However, if you already have 3rd party applications in the areas where S1 is deficient for your workflow, there may be no noticeable holes.

The problem for me is simply that I do not own Melodyne, Sibelius, or a convolution reverb. I love that Cubase has it all there for me. I prefer S1's workflow, though. That is something that is impossible to get from a 3rd party. Sounds like I'm ready to make the jump, but I'm just running through the pros and cons.

1.5 lists among its improvements/additions:
"A pitch-name editor is available in the drum layout, and you can save and load names from a pitch-name list."

Doesn't this cover drum maps for all intents and purposes?
Other than perhaps not giving you little red diamonds on the hits, how does this differ?
Will we be able to rearrange the hits/pitches so we can group kicks, snares, hats, toms, etc?

Post

Audio Quantize? Yes. Warping and quantization with warp markers or hitpoints on contiguous audio? No.

Custom drum maps? Yes. Changing the order of the chromatic scale on the map itself as opposed to rearranging sample positions/assignments on the VSTI to group stuff differently? No.

Pitch Correction? Yes... via a slice and pitch method which works ok for basic (for instance) vocal tuning. Full fledged pitch editor? No.

Post

Lawrence, what about .vstpreset format?
I found on the Presonus forum where people were discussing .fxp/.fxb, but couldn't find a definitive answer either way about .vstpresets.

I'm actually not quite clear on whether .vstpreset is the native file format for VST3 plugins, or if it is exclusive to Cubase 4 and above.

Post

Edit... after taking a second look at a couple of Edirol Instruments in S1 they do allow importing and exporting *.fxb's. and *.fxp's ... so I guess so. I don't know if those will be available directly from the browser though.

Also tried it with Digital Fish Fillets and yeah it works with those two formats so if you have those stored from another daw you can just import those in I guess, and likewise export any you create in S1.
