I don't doubt that's one of the reasons they avoid it.
But still, as has been noted Flash isn't very efficient, and it's limited. You'd have a huge overhead if you wanted to do DSP or 3D stuff, like games or music apps, for instance. And you'd probably have to run any Flash based stuff inside a browser. Not ideal. Also you're supposed to have Flash to make Flash apps, but I guess that's not a concern for everybody.
I think what Henry Greer was saying was that it's available now so why not a huge market in 'Flash Apps', if it's that equivalent.

FWIW, as a professional web developer I would love nothing more (well almost nothing) than to see the death of Flash, but only when there's a viable alternative for rich media.
HTML5 ain't there yet, and if past experience is anything to go by it'll be a looong wait til all browsers support it equally <squinty look at the grey suit in the corner>.

No doubt Flash will be around until who knows when? Maybe forever but not on the iPad. So.. What about Silverlight? What wrong with it? Last I heard the iPad wasn't going to support Sliverlight either. I don't see where that has changed. If that's true, no access to NetFlix would be a serious bummer. The $9 bucks a month deal is excellent.stk wrote:You get one more try to not fail, kiddogeneralstargazer wrote:Sorry I was told HTML5 is never going to implemented fully and flash is here to staystk wrote:FWIW, as a professional web developer I would love nothing more (well almost nothing) than to see the death of Flash, but only when there's a viable alternative for rich media.

Netflix has a dedicated app which works great. If you have video files saved on your computer there is also an app called AirVideo which will stream pretty much any format video from your computer to your iPad, reencoding it if necessary, not only over wifi but also over the Internet. I think they are adding support for audio soon... It's three bucks.
Lots of major sites already have apps or serve iPad compatible content when you hit them with one. Small scale sites like music blogs that play audio with flash are where you start seeing compatibility issues more frequently.

Yes it probably will be around for ages, unfortunately.tomg wrote:No doubt Flash will be around until who knows when? Maybe forever but not on the iPad. So.. What about Silverlight? What wrong with it? Last I heard the iPad wasn't going to support Sliverlight either.
Silverlight I've not had much experience with, but I imagine it suffers the same drawbacks as Flash - closed system, broken useability and degradeability.

True. Some people start out invested in the position of being a complete moron and go on to get further entrenched.eduardo_b wrote:I think people become invested in their positions

My apologies to the teens on KVR... You surely act better than this one...
Sorry if I uspet any ladies. I only react when I get p**sed with peoples attitude . If people cant take a hint to back off then I let rip. As I help a fair amount of people on KVR - i feel the odd faux pas is acceptable. Carry on with the di**k waving propaganda guys. I guess should feel happy that Im seen as a teen - being 47 and all

I just wish they would have included an SD slot or some kind of way to keep more than 64 GB of stuff when an average movie is 4 GB and an average music collection is like at least 40 GB (dont quote me on that) WITHOUT THE SYNC BULL SH*T !!!!!

Hard sell? Attitude? Back off? What's wrong with you? Maybe lay off the cheap drugs for a bit.UltraJv wrote:Sorry if I uspet any ladies. I only react when I get p**sed with peoples attitude . If people cant take a hint to back off then I let rip.
This is a discussion, no-one's been trying to sell Apple products here, and no-one cares what you do or do not buy. Some people might have disagreed with you or pointed out various ways ways in which stuff you'd said was wrong. Aw.
You also seem to have this weird narcissistic notion that the thread is somehow about whether you buy something or not. It isn't, it's about the iPad, not the uPratt.

Well, you keep coming back to me - maybe its love lol - I have a right to my opinion too. That is that the ipad is nothing new. Ive already said this. Sorry if you find that upsetting. You're the one with the bullshit attitude.
Enough. DNFTMoron.

Anything not native code for compute intensive stuff, like DSP, will not perform well... 3D is generally provided as language-specific APIs built on top of underlying platform-specific APIs like OpenGL, DirectX, etc. 3D in and of itself, in terms of rendering and display, can be OK performance wise since you're really going to be a thin language layer on top of a high performance platform API. But generally speaking, the more you can do natively, rather than through language mappings and abstraction layers, the better your performance.masstronaut wrote:You'd have a huge overhead if you wanted to do DSP or 3D stuff, like games or music apps, for instance.
Flash is generally considered "web browser technology", but you can run SWFs or whatever through a standalone Flash player. I think there is also a way to create a standalone "projector" from a SWF without needing the (rather expensive) Flash dev environment. And you'd probably have to run any Flash based stuff inside a browser. Not ideal.
You could go with Flex... Flash's big cousin. A Flash app is a SWF, a Flex app is a SWF... they're the same technology. Flash is designed for "content developers", Flex is for "application developers"... for whatever that is worth. Here's the thing: you can download the Flex SDK for absolutely free... fire up your favorite text editor and command line compile your own SWFs. Or if you're an IDE kinda guy you could use one of the freebie IDEs available. FlexBuilder, which is Adobe's IDE, is what is not free... Flex SDK and tools and runtime environments are all zero cost of entry... The Flex APIs from an app dev perspective are pretty extensive, compared to what you would do with Flash. Also you're supposed to have Flash to make Flash apps, but I guess that's not a concern for everybody.
