While going through the "routing question" thread I remembered a question I have for some time.
It seems quite obvious what the pan slider does for mono output, but what happens for stereo or multichannel output of a rack? Just a kind of "balance" function??
Ideally each output channel should be panned separately, so one can put also a stereo out anywhere into the stereo field - narrow or wide.
Ok, things get complicated with multi channel output then... which might be more a " how to put that in the gui" question than something really technical... Some Programs have a kind of angular control for each channel involved - a bit looking like an analogue VU meter. Just look at the "Notion 3" Mixer - I guess it get's clear what I mean.
Maybe there are other, simpler concepts too, like position and spread for stereo.
Would be interesting what other users think of this.

Yes, it's a simple linear balance.TiUser wrote: It seems quite obvious what the pan slider does for mono output, but what happens for stereo or multichannel output of a rack? Just a kind of "balance" function??
I believe there are a number of multi-channel panning plugins that can do this sort of thing. I considered all this when I originally wrote Cantabile's multi-channel support but it became apparent there were many ways of doing this and plugins already available, so it seemed a little pointless.Ideally each output channel should be panned separately, so one can put also a stereo out anywhere into the stereo field - narrow or wide.

I think in case of stereo output there should be something built in.
I agree with more complex situations like surround.
