I can tell you we have some decent prizes for the comp, so I'll save the begging letter for the following comp .... just have to caych up on a few bits and bobs, and I may yet manage to launch the comp tonight... if not, then tomorrow

Hi folks, sorry for the delay in launching OSC15 .... on top of all the catching up with various other stuff I've had to do, my PC has developed a prob .... power supply fan ( and main cooling fan ) has stopped working and so I have deemed it wise not to use it til the prob is fixed. I'm lucky really ... I wouldn't have been aware of this prob if my cpu fan had not become unbearably noisy .... it was only because I opened up the PC to clean it that I discovered the more worrying power supply fan prob.... the heat inside the case when I opened it up was quite alarming!
So I'll do what I can via the laptop til I have sorted it out.

If you know how to work on it you can get it fixed cheap!
CPU fan is fairly simple, power supply fan ?? OH NO! get a new power supply, do not try to fix a power supply! We would hate to have to find a new OSC host
But I think you've spent enough years working with amps etc. to know this
Good luck Tattie

Seems like this is not the best of periods for computers, I hear a lot of people have been having problems of al kinds
Good luck and take your time
By the way, a friend of mine installed a program which installed a toolbar or something, and youtube and all flash applications now have no sound. She uninstalled the whole thing, checked thoroughly for viruses, spyware etc, but the problem is still there...
I've extensively searched the web for a solution and tried all that was suggested by people who had the same problem. Does any of you have any new idea, perhaps?

Yeah abstractcats, I reckon a new power supply is the way forward .... however, having enough experience of electronics, I will def open up the ps unit and see if it's poss to simply replace the fan .... on the other hand, its so, so easy to change parts in a Dell, that I might chicken out and simply snap in a new power supply.
Anyway, I'm nearly finished the launch thread ... been a struggle cos all the reference notes I tend to use are on the 'rested' PC ... and i've had to download StringZ ... on a slow internet connection ... onto this laptop to remind myself re. integral fx etc .... but I am optomistic I'll finish it and post in the next half hour
... And so, while you're around abstractcats, whats the beast for OSC 16?? .. do you need me to post the updated list to help?

Sorry mac, I dont have a clue what the prob you mention could be solved ... i am personally very wary of the way some progs try and sneak a toolbar in with the download.
I suppose at a guess, since flash is the common factor here, I would try and identify which flash component has been affected ... and reinstall whatever flash app/applet has been skewed by the download. A good start might be to do a search for 'flash' and see what is all on there ... and/or maybe go into services and see if any have been switched to manual or disabled.... anyway .. this aint getting the next comp launched!
... oh and votes?? 6 days to go!

Thanks for the suggestions - we re-installed all flash aplications to no avail
System restore is a no can do due to the freakin' Norton antivirus that blocks all restore points - no way you can go back and restore to a restore point that was made without turning off the stupid norton thing. Since my friend didn't know about this, she just assumed that the automatically saved restore points were fine...
The only thing we haven't tried, yet, is reinstalling all codecs. What a nightmare, and all for a stupid toolbar

uninstall sound drivers
power-off
remove the soundcard if there is one
power on
power off again
reinsert soundcard
reinstall drivers.
And a google search of that toolbar name with
various negative words, might be wise. It likely
peed on the registry, which also might need a redo.
Does your friend have a system restore point from
before the toolbar was unleashed? Some people do, and don't realize it.
Cheers

Good advice, but I forgot to say that everything that has to do with sound works perfectly, it's just all web-based flash applications (such as youtube or some podcasts) that have stopped working
The restore points she has are non-working, because of the norton antivirus that makes them useless unless you make them with the Norton crap turned off
The google search with the negative words I haven't tried, though - I'll give it shot, thanks!
