Unless my memory is fading, likely, I believe that it is Stanford University that any petitions should be addressed to. They own the patents which Yamaha used under licence and used to develop their VL synthesis engine(s).
If this is so, it raises something I always wondered about the Stanford patents as I always understood it that university based projects in the US were automatically by law to be put into the public domain. I assume this was research that wasn't covered by this criteria.
That's assuming I don't have it all tits up in the first place but I believe both points above to be true to the best of my limited knowledge.

Addendum: The Stanford patents used by Yamaha are acknowledged at the bottom of this list...

How about a VSTi glockenspeil.
Besides, Tassman gives us that and Unity Session Synth Expander provides the brass.
Hopefully the competition will initiate a Korg or Yamaha brass VSTi finally.
The jazzy dream is upon us!

Yeah, failing a VL70-m VSTi, here's hoping for a Z1, Oasys or Prophecy VSTi
Or even a DSP Card/Firewire unit type solution would be better than nothing, preferably VST integrated, but first and foremost that must be supported with new drivers, unlike the Oasys.
Pleeez.

I would get a DSP card that could run at least 24 monophonic brass/wind instruments simultaneously. Quality would have to be at least equal to the older VL-1, else there would be no deal. I wouldn't invest in a DSP card, only to run half assed PM instruments on it.

Hi, further to Xoxos' discussion on DIY brass, I found an interesting link of Harm Visser's OASYS Physical Modelling patch site:
http://www.ph.ed.ac.uk/~maarten/
Some interesting papers on doing it yourself.
That said, Harm's models are not quite up there with the Yamaha models, but better than what's available natively AFAIK.

Yeah, the clarinet is pretty good. In fact, SoBy_PM_Woodwind for Reaktor 3 from www.soundbytes.de can do flute and woodwind such as clarinets pretty well. Not really brass as such though, but check http://www.hvsynthdesign.com/ for a list of models by Harm. Maybe we could twist his (H)arm
Or I might get busy with the C++/Synthedit/Reaktor one day
