OK, another day, another bedtime! :) ( hey KVR, where's the 'sleepy' emoticon? )

So here's my notes and quotes, tomorrow I'll do the votes! ... though my reviews will kill any notion of surprises :)

Abu Dhabi ... snappy, crunchy percs, like an eighties minimal '8 bit - does the job' feel .. nice glassy chords and a hint of a credible guitar sound! really nice 'do what I have to and nothing more' lazy bass giving a lovely 'human' feel to the track as a whole. Lovely track, well produced .. particularly love that bass which does what it should, when it should, and comes at you as a fist then hits you with a pilow!

Dubian .... Love the bass! Punchy sounds, and kinda sleazy as well! The brass is so nearly brass.... nevertheless, the brass job is done! .... cool composition allowing space for the sounds to stand up on their own .... simple melody but, good variation in the arrangement ... good production all round!

Invasion ... great percussion . no mean feat in Anubis! ... love the vibe .... a bit like what happens between putting the phone after saying 'yeah, come on over, we have a bottle of wine, and some snacks' .... and then realise the place is looking like something big came along and sneezed into it! .... and it needs sorted out ..quick!! .... Interesting bass sound, and really love the different levels of spacial settings from 'under the nose' to 'way off over the hills'... good variety of sounds altogether and good arrangement.

Contest .... thats a good kik, if it were louder..... nice mellow track, cool automation(?) on the chord ... very realistic snare .... short track, but good stuff .... really need to get the patch for that snare .... best snare in the comp, but is it Anubis? .... that missing text file would have been handy!

Haunted ... mr blitz once again demonstrates the fine line between fairy tale and horror movie with this engaging 'suck you in so I can chew you up composition', with one phrase serving as a fun rope swing, whilst the others represent the beasts who want to chomp your ankles off! I love the mix of clever, carefree and downright careless mrblitz manages to marry off in a short track, One day something is gonna really fly from this guy!

Hibernation ... Like it or not, this is what Anubis does best... the sound of the railings still vibrating long after you've cracked your skull having accidentally knocked said railings whilst falling down the stairs! ... with a hint of aircraft ( or is that just my head swirling? ) .... and the fear of being eaten whilst unconcious by giant insects! Gorgeous dischordant yet natural collage of metal, stone, and flesh..... and yet, if this is really what it sounds like, I can forget the skull giant carnivorous insects, and the and just lie there til it's finished ... and maybe play again!

Ear .. warm, rich, and all encompassing from the off ... excellent full sounding track .... this had 'winner' written all over it the first time I listened, and each subsequent listen has only served to confirm ... Like so many tracks from previous comps, this deserves to have more written about it, but it demands so much listening that writing becomes a distraction. Excellent handling of the bass and lo mids ..... otherwise, this track could have been a real fkn mess..... but it's not!

This has gotta be just about the funniest description of one of my tracks ever
Goodnight from yours truly, too, it's 4.40 am, one bowl of pasta and then it's bedtime for me as well...

lol... +1 on the reviews from tattimannie...

Abu Dhabi..etc On a purely subjective level this is closest to my kind of music - a nice reggae feel to it, with conventional harmonies and chord structure, a good use of percussion too and the intro was well handled - unfussy and straight to the point.

More than meets ..etc. a similar level of musicianship, but I didn't enjoy the feel of it quite so much as Abu.

Anubian Invasion.. Some great synth programming here, interesting and different timbres, the sharp metallic hits that come in around 40 secs are very effective. And I have to disagree with one of tattie's coments above, I think that the best snare might actually be found in this track  Not necessarily what I would listen to for pleasure, but would certainly make a great atmospheric track for some dystopian computer game.

Anubis Contest - it starts well, the opening pad is nice and the drum groove that gets going is interesting. Doesn't really feel like a finished piece (and I suspect that the drum loop at the end isn't Anubis?).

Haunted Mega... Starts well, but... sorry, *personal taste*, I don't really get the unconventional approach here. And the simple patch used doesn't really tell me much about Anubis' potential - it might have been more engaging if there had been an attempt to bring out some contrasting colours and textures? (On a positive note, I do much prefer you're entry for the Stringz comp mrblitz :) )

Hybernation... hmm.. atmospheric with some unusual timbres.. didn't really do much for me, sorry.

Minstrel... Frenetic, full of energy and musical ideas. Lots of 'edgy' synth programming  - some of it perhaps a little too edgy (but, if anything, that's probably more a reflection upon Anubis' sonic character  ). And if points were awarded for the most appallingly, dreadful pun...

Abu Dhabi Do Dhah .... Yeager 5
Anubian Invasion .... Xenobioz 3
Minstrel Cycle.... tattiemannie 1

Cheers for the reviews and the votes hakey :)

Ok, so here are my votes.

More Than Meets The Ear - Yeager ... 5
Anubian Invasion - Xenobioz ... 3
Anubian Dubian - Mr Wobble ... 1

Some thoughts:

Anubian Dubian/Dub of Anubia - Mr Wobble: Great brass/lead sounds, nice low-end, lovely laidback, great "fillers" and percussion, very musical, good production, It's what Abu Dhabi should have been... :( .

Anubian Invasion - Xenobioz: Great snare, nice buzy bassline, arabian lead, good percussion, I like the screamy sound at the end, solid production; song somehow tells a story.

Haunted_Megalopolis---mrblitz000: again .. mrblitz is mrblitz with a hint of Residents, the two melodies, sometimes seem unrelated, fighting for the lead, then playing nicely together.
Somehow it always seems to me that mrblitz has more notes in an octave than anybody else.

Mac_of_BIOnighT-HYBERNATION_CHAMBER: This is the stuff I used to hate, when Schultze did it or TD. I somehow always wanted some sort of melody / rhythmic pattern to take over.
Now that I try to make music myself , I found out that this is very hard to make (at least for me).
I still can't listen to it the whole 18.20 minutes in one go (I managed it once), but I hear some very nice sounddesign here.

Minstrel cycle - tattiemannie: Great melodies/sounds/percussion and drums, happy and uppy. I struggled with madtracker myself way back when, and know how hard it was to get velocity-variations and/or the rhythm right.
Most of tatties OSCwork seem to have a strong stereo-pan sound to it (If you know what I mean) which makes listening to them with headphones on a little awkward.
Again a lot is happening, sound and melody wise, and I always love that.(Also love the title).

Mystery track - Anon: Obviously unfinished, some hints of nice sounddesign / use of samples?!.

As for the votes:

Anubian Dubian/Dub of Anubia - Mr Wobble - 5
Minstrel cycle - tattiemannie - 3
Anubian Invasion - Xenobioz - 1

And a big thanks to everybody who took part in the voting/writing. :D

..... All the action is close behind the leader as 'Hibernation' follows the previous step forward with two steps back ... and appears to be, well ... hibernating??.

'Invasion' and 'Dubian' take advantage with healthy gains, and both move up a place.

'Hibernation' now has 'Abu Dhabi' close enough behind to read the washing instructions on his baseball cap while 'Meets the Ear' can take a breath after opening up a small but significant gap at the top.

'Minstrel' and 'Haunted' on the other hand are so isolated that they can take their sweets out of their pockets and not have to share them out :D

.... So its an intriguing finish .... no-one in the top 5 can be discounted as a potential winner, and even if 'meets the ear' can hang on, there are only 4 points between 2nd and 5th!! :-o

.... So lets have more votes! 2 an a half days to go!!! :-o

Post

Man, if I don't get at least a couple of good votes, I'm done :(
I thought I'd fare worse, anyway, considering the nature of the track, so I guess I can be happy anyway ;)

Post

Would I swap places with you?? .... hmmm ... I think in KVR that question is defined as a 'no brainer' ... :hihi: ... nite nite! :)

Post

OK,OK, I'll keep my place :borg: (the Borg emoticon has nothing to do with this, but I just have to use it now and then, and this is as good a time as any...)

Post

18 and a half hours to go!!!!! :-o :-o

Post

:-o :-o :-o

Post

... yeah scary, but there are a good few previous comp voters out there who can make all the difference! .... or not as the case may be :hihi:

Post

Hopefully a difference in my favor...

Sorry for the late voting, computer trouble including complete reinstall (with the backup there's no space for, you know how it works.. :? ) and colicky baby suck a LOT of time.. :drunk:

5 pts: Anubian Invasion - Xenobioz
A tune with nerve and story deserving of top spot despite the lesser production and chip sounds which the author favours.. ;)

3 pts: Anubian Dubian - Mr Wobble
Nice production again here.

1 pt: More Than Meets The Ear - Yeager
Another good production.
