Apple Developer Support explain all. When emailed about the technical implications of the change in the agreement terms by a paid-up Apple developer:
"Thank you for contacting the Apple Developer Support regarding the iPhone Developer Program.

Please know that we are unable to provide interpretation of the terms and conditions outlined in the License Agreement. You may wish to contact your legal counsel in order to clarify the terms.

I hope that this information is useful to you. Please let me know if you have any questions."
(my emphasis).

Helpful, huh?

Did you catch the Daring Fireball comment that stated that developers have been moved from the OSX 10.7 team to the iPhone team because Jobs' main agenda is destroying Android?

This all leaves me with a very bad taste in my mouth for getting the iPhone.
I love it, but I dislike Apple to the point where I'm pretty sure this is the last Apple product I'll own.

When you read all the articles and you look at all the things they're doing, I get this image of a bunch of children playing and fighting. "He did this so now I'm going to do that!". I'm sure there's business-critical measures in there as well, but mostly it's like kids trying to get the upper hand.

Now, why should that be? Why should we judge and analyse everything we touch and use? What difference does it make what a bunch of ridiculously rich f**kers do on the top layer?

I look for functionality. I look for things I like to use and that do all or as much of the things I want it to do. I couldn't care less what's behind it and I couldn't care less who of those rich f**kers is the most or less annoying one. The iPhone does mostly what I want it to do (I'm definitely giving Android a better try at some point to compare), the Mac computers do and work the way I like it, my Samsung TV does what it's supposed to do, my Humax DVR does what I want it to do and does it well, my Bosch fridge keeps my stuff cold and my Sony radio plays radio and it works well.

What the f**k do I care who's behind all those devices. If you have to start caring about all of that there's f**k all room anymore to be sane.

In the end, the users don't know or care what language their apps are in. They just want their quality middleware farting apps.

That's what gets me. In the iPhone OS4 launch announcements, they were bragging about having 50,000+ apps??? I would wager that MAYBE 1% of those do anything useful at all.

To me, it's just a platform full of apps aimed at impulse $2 purchases.

But that's just my opinion...

unless its Flash, of course. :)

But what you just said is pretty much the point; why should we have to care what's underneath the apps we want to use? As a developer, why would one need to care what one used to build the apps?

All of a sudden you do need to care. Your favourite apps might be 'substandard' whether you like to use them or not. Bye-bye favourite apps. How many of those apps out there d'you think do break the new rules? Seems like there's a helluva lot of very popular Unity and Lua games out there, for example. Middleware is how the entire games industry works. Noone can sanely build a new engine every game, and no-one tries any more. Why is iPod development different?

Shouldnt the point of the iPod be that its the delivery system for the stuff you like, instead of the mechanism for controlling what you can and will get?

And I would wager 99% of all of them are either trivial Objective-C applications, or use some level of middleware.

So why isnt Steve boasting about having 500 non sub-standard apps?

Oh I absolutely agree, and I'm not even a developer! I'm sure there's going to be a few occasions where I go "what the hell happened to updates for this app?". But the real headaches are with the developers. As a consumer, the annoyance will be minimal I think. One quickly gets used to new environments. An app may disappear but two other apps may take it's place and things will soon be forgotten.

And in the end we still have the most powerful of consumer powers available.. if we don't like it we don't buy it.

Let Apple and the rest do what they want to do. At the moment there's still plenty of choice.
