Of course there's yet another irony in the fact that Apple wouldnt even have a properly multitasking desktop OS if they hadn't built on a tier of open-source software... Hell even the C++ compiler they want you to use is GPL'd.

Betcha Stallman is pissed. Biggest software lockdown in recent history based on his own compiler.

Btw, Adobe pretty much told Apple to get lost in the 90s and refused to develop for the Mac platform. Can you really expect Apple to play nice now with Adobe?

Some interesting points in this:

http://fbindie.posterous.com/9-reasons- ... p-the-fi-0

Apple are now promoting the iPod etc on the idea of apps. But they're restricting developers more and more as to how to build those apps. They're also increasing lock-in on what gets delivered inside/alongside an app with their own 'proprietry' systems (ads, the game centre thingy).

All in all they're grabbing a larger piece of the pie and leaving less for the developers. Meanwhile their biggest competition, Android, is more and more open, and yet that's what they want to go head-to-head with.

So far app development has been a bit of a free-for-all goldrush, but now Apple has decided to opt in for the strip-mining option, and whilst that means more for him, Im not so sure that it means more for the developers or the end-users. In many ways it definitely means less.

IBM had to learn it, Microsoft are still learning it, SGI died because of it, but for some reason Jobs is on his third go at it; closed systems tend to stagnate and open systems thrive better. In his rush to crush Android he might just have handed it the leverage it needs to eat his lunch...

I agree with whyterabbyt,

Android will kill after this.

I ordered the iPad wifi, before hearing this a few days ago.

This is really bad news.

Yes, Ive seen all those comments about how this is Apple getting back for Adobe not porting to OSX soon enough. But dont forget, Apple had changed their underlying hardware platform completely 3 times over in that same time period, from 68xxx to PPC to Intel. For a company like Adobe, it must get pretty bloody painful to have to support one OS that's constantly breaking your apps with every revision when its major competitor pretty much offers backwards compatibility written in to help you.
I dont recall Adobe moving into building operating systems, but what would you think if you had to watch an operating system company buy up apps that put it in direct competition with you?
Combine that and you'd not necessarily spend your time prioritising porting and supporting their next new shiny either, which is what the 'get lost' basically entailed. Adobe got fed up of helping Apple sell Macs, and getting more hard work for the privilege.
In 2003, Apple announced a program for Premiere users to trade in their discs for a free copy of Final Cut Express or a $500 discount on Final Cut Pro.

My 5th grade yearbook entry described my future dream job as "Worker for Apple Computers" (which I did eventually achieve). Its so sad when one of my childhood personal heroes turns out to be a complete asshole. :(

He's been getting things pretty much right for a long time and many people seem to believe he can't do wrong. I'm very certain indeed that he will get it wrong at some point, and this may already be the occasion he got it wrong.

There's that as well.

There's some really big companies getting screwed by this, not just Adobe but smaller developers as well with big products. It wouldn't surprise me if we see a change of course to some extend.

I love it, but I dislike Apple to the point where I'm pretty sure this is the last Apple product I'll own.
Now, why should that be? Why should we judge and analyse everything we touch and use? What difference does it make what a bunch of ridiculously rich f**kers do on the top layer?

I look for functionality. I look for things I like to use and that do all or as much of the things I want it to do. I couldn't care less what's behind it and I couldn't care less who of those rich f**kers is the most or less annoying one. The iPhone does mostly what I want it to do (I'm definitely giving Android a better try at some point to compare), the Mac computers do and work the way I like it, my Samsung TV does what it's supposed to do, my Humax DVR does what I want it to do and does it well, my Bosch fridge keeps my stuff cold and my Sony radio plays radio and it works well.

What the f**k do I care who's behind all those devices. If you have to start caring about all of that there's f**k all room anymore to be sane.
Statements like this are essentially the demise of humanity (although not unexpected). What you are essentially saying is - as long as I have candy in my mouth and it tastes good - why the f*ck should I care who got raped, pillaged and stolen from to create it? And if I have to answer that question we are in worse shape than I thought.

We should care, and we should evaluate, and we should combine together as consumers to force the behaviour of corporations. Why? Otherwise you have evil rich b*stards running around sh*tting where they please, p*ssing on peoples heads, telling them its sunshine and growing richer and fatter - and generally ruining the world. Its not a far step from lives being destroyed, groups annhiliated, laws violated etc.

Seriously - "they" (being Jobs, Gates, Google founders) are like children having a pissing contest, and they all are attempting to test the boundaries of what consumers will tolerate. Jobs "thinks" he is a genius (which he is not), he thinks he knows better than everyone else - Google, Microsoft, even society at large - and he has a huge chip on his shoulder, and he is out to prove he is the smartest and best - which is a HUGE neurosis, and quite scary actually (which negates him being a Genius imo).

You will only see Apple clamp down more - they have a very fascist ideology which is why I dont support them. Yes their products are pretty, and they will continue to be pretty, but if they gain a large % of market share and are able to damage the competition enough - you will see the true colors of Steve Jobs and Apple come out(he hasnt shown them yet - but he is starting to).

But we're not talking about theft, pillage and rape here, are we? We are talking about a mobile platform and what some guy decides are the rules.

The only way you can influence that is to resort to violence..
or DON'T BUY their products.

We don't have any other powers as consumers in this world.
It's a pretty good power though

Newsflash!

Capitalism, consumerism and business IS fascism. The only difference is that capitalism is a lot less organised than you're classic 'Nazi's anno 1920-45' fascism.
