When it comes to design, they are without a doubt the best in the business You can talk about the flaws all you like, but from an ergonomic and design view, they make some seriously cool stuff.. whatever the issues behind some of it.
You can't deny that.

yeah, this whole messiah thing.. you have to question the people who think like that, not the ones who get worshiped. If reality teaches us one thing it's that worshiping of any kind is among the most ludicrous human pastimes around.whyterabbyt wrote:(and he's not the messiah...)penguinfromdeep wrote:Yes it's a business and Apple is a company that's sole purpose is to make profit like any other company

What you are essentially saying is - as long as I have candy in my mouth and it tastes good - why the f*ck should I care who got raped, pillaged and stolen from to create it? And if I have to answer that question we are in worse shape than I thought. The only way you can influence that is to resort to violence..We should care, and we should evaluate, and we should combine together as consumers to force the behaviour of corporations. Why? Otherwise you have evil rich b*stards running around sh*tting where they please, p*ssing on peoples heads, telling them its sunshine and growing richer and fatter - and generally ruining the world. Its not a far step from lives being destroyed, groups annhiliated, laws violated etc.
or DON'T BUY their products.
We don't have any other powers as consumers in this world.
It's a pretty good power though
Newsflash!Seriously - "they" (being Jobs, Gates, Google founders) are like children having a pissing contest, and they all are attempting to test the boundaries of what consumers will tolerate. Jobs "thinks" he is a genius (which he is not), he thinks he knows better than everyone else - Google, Microsoft, even society at large - and he has a huge chip on his shoulder, and he is out to prove he is the smartest and best - which is a HUGE neurosis, and quite scary actually (which negates him being a Genius imo).
You will only see Apple clamp down more - they have a very fascist ideology which is why I dont support them. Yes their products are pretty, and they will continue to be pretty, but if they gain a large % of market share and are able to damage the competition enough - you will see the true colors of Steve Jobs and Apple come out(he hasnt shown them yet - but he is starting to).
Capitalism, consumerism and business IS fascism. The only difference is that capitalism is a lot less organised than you're classic 'Nazi's anno 1920-45' fascism.
Disagree. Capitalism, as very imperfect and rotten as it is, is still the best option at present percisely because as you noted above, its possible to have a choice, and excercise it by simply not buying (which is what I do). Fascism doesnt give you that option. Steve Jobs, if he could, would take that option away so that you cant make the choice, or the decision (percisely why he is against Open Source etc - he feels that people are essentially idiots, and its up to him to tell them what to do and how to do it).
Re: Consumer power: Given the internet, it would be possible to shape corporate behaviour based on consumer groups, but there are a myriad of inherent problems with that approach as well - but quite possible if done properly.
The best option is to excercise moral proper judgement when you interact with corporations, as we as consumers bear as much or more responsibility as the corporations themselves - not to say "f*ck it - I like the toy, I dont care what they do"
I believe Jobs (and some others), if he could, would control every aspect of yours and my life. Corporations now have more power than many governments of the world. You may think that you do no harm by supporting them, but in fact you can actually have a significant impact on the world.

The same is true of Communism, Socialism and Feudalism. Capitalism doesn't have a monopoly on giving people the choice to buy or not.cybertron wrote:Capitalism, as very imperfect and rotten as it is, is still the best option at present percisely because as you noted above, its possible to have a choice, and excercise it by simply not buying (which is what I do).

The range, breadth and depth of choice actually is the invention of Democracy and Capitalism (as they largely go hand in hand - "free market" - providing choice)robojam wrote:The same is true of Communism, Socialism and Feudalism. Capitalism > Socialism, Communism and Feudalism.
The debacle with the US Healthcare is bs. Socialism sucks.

Problem is that there are few (or no) real democracies anywhere in the world, but plenty of capitalism.cybertron wrote:The range, breadth and depth of choice actually is the invention of Democracy and Capitalism (as they largely go hand in hand - "free market" - providing choice)robojam wrote:The same is true of Communism, Socialism and Feudalism. That's just a populist anti-mac-fanboy view. They didn't steal the iphone interface and they didn't steal the Macbook design from anyone in a way that everyone isn't stealing from everyone else. If that was the case, where are the products to rival them in the design stakes?TristezaOrange wrote:When it comes to stealing design *cough* Sony *cough* and claiming it as their own, they are indeed the best in the business.spaceman wrote:When it comes to design, they are without a doubt the best in the business .
