OSX is open, yes. I can write software for it and run it. Anyone can, and using many different available tools and languages as well.

Wow your rather hostile arent you? I asked a question plain and simple. So then Mac does only resrict which hardware you use and attempts to provide the majority of main applications itself rather than rely on 3rd party developers for its OS. Not only that but it provides the tools to develop the applications with the OS itself.....no not controlling at all!

Windows is a sl*t in comparison, so is google in the handheld device market. The point is made regarding Jobs repeating his behaviour. He likes to control. He liked to control the Mac - the configurations, hardware and applications present on it, just as he likes to control the iPhone and its apps (application approval through the App store? - Flash anyone?)

What I am claiming is that Android devices can overtake the iPhone over the next couple of years.

They certainly can, but looking at the track record of the companies involved (Google being the difficult one as they're so new to the game) they're going to have to start doing things very differently very soon. And Apple is not standing still in the meanwhile either.. as we know.

I can't think of any device comparable in form and function to an iPhone that works as well. HTC as a manufacturer is getting closer with their Android models but read the reviews.. they've got some things to sort out yet. But at least Android is a platform to potentially shame Apple's OS4.

If I were to get an iphone, I would essentially be getting the phone I have now minus a USB port (as opposed to apple's proprietary bullshit which allows it to connect to anything and charge anywhere), SDcard, a browser with flash, full multitasking, and I would have to reinstall itunes (Android connects as a flash drive, a very under-rated function). About half of my friends with smartphones will have the iphone and I really don't see many advantages at all to it.

But really the biggest factor is that puts me off the iphone is the carrot-dangling. Remember when the first gen came out, and the Iphone was the ultimate smartphone! Except with no video recording or AIM/MMS or 3G or C+P like the better phones at the time, but they swept that under the carpet. Then the next gen (3G) came out and it's the ultimate! Best phone ever! Except still no video, MMS, compass etc etc like other phones...but wait, the latest Iphone can record video and has a compass! OMG it's again the best phone ever! Except still limited multitasking, limited voice recognition, and no flash. Point is, Apple blatantly releases crippled products, waits for people to drop their money, then uncripples it a little, waits for people to drop their money again, ad infinitum. Their "Apple is a lifestyle" type marketing allows for the type of fanboyism to make such a business model work. It wouldn't fly for any other company.

YMMV and this is only my perspective, etc., but a lot of people, especially of my "screenager" generation really just don't want to deal with that type of bullshit tech politics that apple puts forth.

And Microsoft, as always, seems to be on track of missing the mark by some margin with Phone 7. You'd expect them to at least give Apple the finger by including multi-tasking and copy/paste right from the start.

So buyers of earlier versions have to buy the newer ones to gain the added features, is that correct? No updating the firmware? If it takes three or four generations to fully feature the phone, that's like, what, around $1000 (or more).

No. Opera Mini doesn't even come close to Safari's browsing quality.

Opera is fast and it is free. Those are the only 2 things that are good about it. But the rendering (especially of text) is so bad, jagged and pixelated that it burns your eyes. Also the elegant zooming of Safari is virtually nonexistent in Opera.

Hmm. I use Opera mobile Beta 5 on my Blackberry and it looks just fine. My experience with Safari in Windows was craptastic, and I've read it's not gotten better with revisions.
