As lots of freeware plugs are Windows only, the comp will be mostly for Windows users... However... I'm running majority of vst Windows plugs under Linux + WINE + Jack + WineASIO without any problems. I use MU.LAB (also free version available at http://www.mutools.com/) and SAVIHost as my main hosts. These Windows hosts are very stable under Linux. I'm saying this because I know there also exists WINE layer for OSX http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX If you wish I'm sure you could work out good setup to run Windows plugs under OSX, looking almost like native programs, without need of use any additional virtual machines.xerxes[no] wrote:And one more thing. Yeah definitely mrblitz ... this is the best PC I've ever had .... and I dont think it can be bought new anymore so I'm gonna keep my eye on ebay and make sure I can have enough spares to keep it alive for as long as poss! Its weakest 'link' is that it only has 512Mb memory ... and yet, if that had ever given me a problem, it would be well 'upped' by now! ... but I'm gonna up it anyway
... I dont have a great deal of money, but I figure that being the cheapest PC I've bought (... at £50, cheaper than most repairs to previous machines! ) .. it has saved me a lot of cash, and a lot of grief as well, so I should be nice to it and slap a 1Gb memory into the beast .... which will give me 1.25 gigs in total, and counteract the tiny amount of slowing down it has displayed in two years of running around 14 hrs a day!
I would recommend it to anyone doing music on a limited budget for sure!

If you can work on a power supply...and not electrocute your self
You should be able to build one your self and it should be a little cheaper as well. Or may be just get a new mother board and duo or quad core CPU?
There should be quite a few people here on KVR to walk you through the build process, including my self, I just fixed mine after what seemed to be Hard Drive failure, it was just in need of a new battery on the mother board.
And you can find YouTube videos which will show you how from start to finish.

.... yeah, I have no real fears about building my own, and in a way, thats what I'll be doing in the next wee while. Thing is, I really like this PC ... but the one I bought for spares arrived today, and I've looked inside ... and it looks like its newer than the one I'm using, and has more RAM slots! ... and all it needs is a HD. It has a speed of 2.8GHz, whereas my present machine is 3.2Ghz ... would that make an awful lot of difference? particularly if I increased the RAM?
I have a couple of drives in two other redundant PCs, and if the 160Gb one fits, and everything works, then I may be better souping that one up than the one I'm using! ..... thats not getting my StringZ2 track done though, is it??

You don't seem to be loosing a huge about with the new CPU, but you'll have to run all your programs to see how they like the drop in CPU.tattiemannie wrote:

As for RAM a couple of things to check before installing more, how much will the mother board handle, some older PCs will actually get very hot and begin to smoke(Nooo mon' I don't mean da' Gonga) Yes I know the from personal experience!
Another is what OS are you using? Check to see how much RAM the OS your using will "see", some will only see about 1-2 GIG, I use XP Pro x64 which will see up to about 4 gig which is what I have, I've heard that windows 7 x32 will see about 6 gig, but I don't remember for sure.
But check the specs and you'll know.

... Got all that abstractcats ... max ram is 8Gb, but I'm ony thinking of taking it from the existing 512Mb to around 1.5Gb.
I've installed the 160Gb drive from one of my old 'retired' machines, and so far so good! No time to do a setup right now, and the system battery needs replaced, but its looking good!
Of course, with my present DAW working fine, I may decide to simply use the new machine as a back up in case this beast gets ill again, and for extra music storage, playing/burning cds, just have a minimum number of essential music apps ... I dunno, see how it goes.
