Is 2C's Aether REALLY worth it? (the answer is: yes, certainly)

Having problems with it in Logic 9.1.1 on OS 10.5.8, with 3rd party instruments on the channel. It either quits Logic or no audio on output.

Works ok with built in Logic instruments though :?

anyone else can confirm this?

I've tried "Run as admministrator" but that's not working either. BTW: in the properties the version still reads 1,0,0,2.

Can I install it manually? Or does the installer do additional mojo?
you are experiencing the aformentioned "black magic stuff" that remains somewhat of a mystery to us with regard to the inner workings of and subtlies of Win Vista/7 permissions and "enhanced security". Currently we have no idea why this happens to a very small percentage of users...

Manual install is fine.

If you extract all files from the installer to a new folder and move the "2C-Aether-PC" folder from the installer folder to .../program files/ and run it from there, the installer will likely work too... don't ask me why?? Maybe someone smarter than us has some insights in this area?

Did the manual install and it's fine. But I'll have to figure out the dual 32/64 install because I want to run it in both kinds of hosts. Since I don't have a "setup folder" (so no "/pkg" sub-folder) I find the REAME.txt notes confusing.

But as to the sound: I am speechless. Thank you.

@ 4X, UltraSmooth, Excellence: it's simply amazing.

We can not reproduce (at lest on OSX.6.3). What instrument specifically? OS? Hardware?

I had not problems installing under Windows 7 64 bit. The Setup.exe installation went smooth.

..scratch that, it seems maybe there is something odd here. We are exploring...

Jesus, chill out. How many software releases can you name that were perfect in every host and platform on day one?

Doing a quick test here with Aether inserted on Instrument tracks in Logic using Absynth 5, Alchemy, Tassman and Kontakt, all smooth, no crashes. It might depend on the Aether Algorhythm used maybe?

EDIT: I forgot to mention: I'm on Logic 9.1.1 running Mac OSX 10.5.8 on a Mac Pro 8-core

Problems with Logic 9.0.2 and OS 10.5.8: no sound and the DAW crashes.

Another query on the 64 and 32 bit installs: I run Win 7 64 and have both 32 and 64 bit hosts and wish to run the updater on the 32 bit version I have in my 32 bit VSTplugins folder and to install the 64 bit version on a different path.

With the current updater, I can nominate my install directory for the first pass of the installer for the 64 bit version but not the second time round when I want to update the 32 bit version. It seems to take my VSTplugins 64 path as being the path for a subsequent 32 bit run of the installer. I already had the 32 bit version of 1.01 installed and it has not been updated so it is not using any previously stored path (in the registry for example) for the 32 bit update - instead it is using the new path to the 64 bit plugin folder.

Post

Just installed on Win 7 x64 without any problems. The only thing I would mention is - there is no chance to change the VST path. My old version was in C:\vst plugins\32 bit\2C-Aether but I want the 64 bit version to go into
C:\vst plugins\64 bit\2C-Aether. I just hacked the registry (for future installations) but I'm sure that's not recommended for everyone.

I'm going to have a play with it now - and am looking through the "what's new".

My initial question is - how does aethe know when it's doing an offline bounce? Do I just bounce a song in SONAR as normal? Do I have to tell aether at any point?

Most/all common hosts communicate this information to plug-ins... It is automatic.

For hosts that do not have this ability, we offer the "Force Offline" switch, but note that will make your system use the off-line settings for real-time, and they are too CPU intensive for real-time, so only turn this on immediately before you go to bounce if you need to. Hosts that require this switch are mostly Editor apps like Sound Forge etc and not common DAW hosts. Sonar, Logic, Live, Cubase, Nuendo, DP, Studio One, etc... all do this automatically...

and of course, as mentioned the lowest quality settings, are the same as the award-winning 1.0.1, so it's not the end of the world to use these settings if you have to either.

In fact, sound quality is better in 1.5 vs 1.0.1 even at lowest quality settings b/c of 64bit dsp, and a bunch of refinements we made behind the scenes.

If you have the CPU overhead to spare, running at 2x, is the best balance, and then you can do bounces at 4x.

...more on this stuff later once we fix this little AU snag, and do the official launch...

I am not going to be real active here today, as we need to put out heads down on this and getting the manual and web updated....
