Story:

My wife Lora has an old CD-R of the Chemical Brothers of uncertain provenance. I think it is made up of recordings people made of various radio shows. In any case, on it there is a song that fits the description in this thread's title.

It stayed in the back of my mind as a vague inspiration. In the meantime, my bandmate Charles became obsessed with making ambient loops in real time, using a guitar and, well, this:

This rig feeds three different amps using a bewildering variety of A/B boxes and stereo outputs.

So he happened to make a loop that sounded just like a single propeller airplane going overhead at a fairly low altitude on a quiet afternoon.

These things happen.

And then he made some additional loops that went with the original loop. And then he wrote a very sparse song about an airplane that went with all of these sounds that was called:

Pilot Light

And then I got a hold of it.

Editing mayhem ensued.

The result:

The Airplane Song

love the drone + processed voice section. (the beginning really reminds me of Within You Without You by george harrison, one of my favorite beatles songs.) not crazy about the drum part, but that's par for the course for me. :-)

Those drums certainly crash the party!

I kept trying to get a count. It sounds offhand like an odd time signature, but it seems to count out as '4/4.'

Yes. If it weren't for the aforementioned Chemical Brothers remix it would probably never have occurred to me to add drums. That being said, I do like the effect. It's just so theatrically....glow-sticky.

The main point was to take a stylistic meme native to a genre that employs sampling, and make something in the same style that doesn't use sampling.

Sort of livetronica, only not live....or something.... :?
