One-Synth-Challenge 15 - Krakli's StringZ!

I'm having to author my tracks in Live, find a Krakli preset that's similar to my Live preset and then render out as a Krakli tune every now and again before my CPU maxes out and Live crashes. A terrible way to go but a tune's a tune. Let's make sure OSC16 uses a much more stable VST. Krakli sounds great. I just get so many crashes. Some just by opening the file.

Cheers objectman ... thats helpful ... I now know that its the synth and not musagi that's the CPU issue ... so no point in chickening out and tranferring to FL
.... I'll persevere with musagi ... even though it means i'l not be able to use any FX

I've got 2 instances of StringZ2, 4 patterns and 40 seconds of the track ready. Glorious!

Why do you guys use these really obscure DAWs? I prototype my tracks using Synfire with plain old GM sounds (no StringZ involved during composition/prototyping phase) and finally produce the whole mess in Live 8. Works fine for me. I now have two very similar sounding tracks in the works and can't decide which one to submit...
May I contribute two contest entries?

tattie:
Could you tell me what CPU have you got? Your issue reminds me Pentium IV denormalization bug: http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.p ... &subItem=6
Although I have Pentium IV and I haven't noticed such a behaviour on my machine...

Yeah, I remember you said you work third shift, I have a friend who worked most of the 17 years we've known each other, I don't envy third shiftMac of BIOnighT wrote:Right now it's 6.30 in the morning and I'm about to go to bed...(yes, I've got strange hours)

Ugh! I understand why this is called a "challenge". You really can't just write in Live and then change to the Krakli VST. There's a different flavour to the sound completely which means a lot of tweaking (and saving) between crashes.
This is what I'm doing:
1. Choose my lead, bass and other spot-fx presets (at this stage I'm not even going to attempt sound design - the presets are cool anyhow).
2. Get my tracks mostly working in Krakli (between CPU max out combined with Ableton crash).
3. Change the VST to similar Live instruments for tweaking so as to avoid crashes.
4. Basically re-draft whole piece in Live.
5. Re-instigate the Krakli patches I liked.
6. Adjust volume of Krakli patches / change presets to suit new mix
7. Save & Close
8. Re-open for immediate output as WAV.
I only feel safe when I output my drafts as WAV files. At least I have them - even if it's not quite there yet. And I always have the "osc15-liveonly.asd" file should Krakli really stuff up.
What are you guys doing in terms of "workflow?" (aka. "crashflow")

HiEnergy ... yeah you can submit two tracks! ... you dont need to ask 'lord tattiemannie' .... there's never been a rule to prevent it, and multiple submissions have been happening since OSC1!
Thats an sound approach you use for composition, but I like to see what sounds the synth can do before I start writing ... allowing the character of the synth to influence the track.
.... Yeah, I am using an obscure DAW again .... last time it was in solidarity with those who were having a prob with Anubis, .... this time its just because I'm a silly man!
Dwsel, that's interesting, I'll read that when I get a minute ... I do have P4, but I've not seen this issue any time other than workin in musagi.
Good to know there are some more tracks coming!

Actually, job-wise it's a bit more complicated than that, as I work for an auditorium/concert hall and therefore I work sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon, and sometimes at night (meaning 6.00 pm to midnight/1.00/2.00/whatever) or any combination of the three, depending on what period of the day the hall gets rented. Which is having a very negative impact on my life, by the way (time to change, but it's hard to find a job today...).abstractcats wrote: Yeah, I remember you said you work third shift
The odd hours are actually due to my natural wake/sleep cycle: I go to bed at 5.00/6.00 in the morning and get up at 2.00 pm, more or less. Any other hours kill me physically and mentally
