freeware is freeware, you get what you pay for

There are many good free synths around, several at least as good as Synth1 in many respects. However, none of them sounds LIKE Synth1, and that's the reason I like to use Synth1 besides the other (free) synths I use.

That is not exactly true; there are 'pay for' synths that are way better then any free synth (but still depends on how you look at it). However, there are many 'pay for' synths that are much less then free synths like Synth1, Oatmeal, Voyager, SQ8L, etc.

Hmmm...if one was to use the following description - low aliasing oscillators, clean, bell-like fm, sharp sync, and a smooth, precise filter with a 'natural', progressive transition to self oscillation - about one of those two synths, which would it be?

Synth1 is deservedly popular - a great little synth in its day, fun and easy to use with ultra low cpu and 8000+ patches - but to say that it's sound engine is better than (the much more recent) Elek7ro is just daft, IMO of course ;) . I would be very surprised if you could find any pro sound designers or synth devs who would agree with such a statement.

Mr. Ichiro Toda, thank you very much for creating such a fine synthesizer and offering it for free. I have used it in the past and even made an song exclusively with your synthesizer.
I have installed the new version and the many free sounds that were offered in this thread and I am looking forward to using you synthesizer again in the future.

Synth1 (v1.08 ) VS Tal Elektro (v2.7) .. or Tal Elektro VS Synth1 :hihi:

Same Midi file, about same settings, same distortion with same settings, same automation. Nothing else. Hear the difference between the two synths. One of them is called "Synth A" and the other is "Synth B" ...

0:00 - 0:14 - Clean
0:15 - 0:22 - Distortion ON - Sat 000/100
0:23 - 0:29 - Distortion ON - Sat 050/100
0:30 - 0:46 - Distortion ON - Sat 100/100

Toda-San,

私はあなたのウェブサイトに "Paypalの寄付ボタン" を置けば理解した、私達がすべてのあなたのハードワークのためのあなたに、私達お金を寄付できる数回を提案したらかどうか知らない。

I don't know if you understood, but we suggested a few times that if you put a "Paypal Donation" button on your website, we can donate money to you for all your hard work.

I agree Tal Elektro is king of the hill imo. I love it really.
I don't think it can do the diversity in sounds that Synth1 can, but it definitely excels at the analogue sounds of old thing.

I would happily pay something as well. A Paypal Button is a very good idea I think.

3ee, how about comparing FM, or filter cut off at high res, or the transition of the filter to self oscillation?

The difference in behaviour between the respective synths' filters is absolutely obvious to my ears.

Synth1 is still a great little synth, easy to use, loads of really nice patches etc.. but I think I said that already ;)

(Synth A is Elek7ro - what do I win?)

I can't get the presets to show up in the Synth1 update, on XP.
Everythings where it should be in the vstplugins folder, and there is sound, but no presets, which are in the folders. Strange.
A message says invalid folder. Any ideas?

There you have it in a nutshell; how 'good' a synth is does not only depend on it's sound but also how versatile it is and how much character it has. Elek7tro is a great synth but also rather limited as it emulates a rather basic synth configuration. The way I see it they are both a great addition to the other :)

I find these 'which is best' comparisons always a bit silly. Especially as they are all free so you can have them all at no extra cost ;)

I have been playing loads of hardware synths for about 30 years. But with Synth1, Oatmeal, SQ8L, CS33 and Elek7tro I'm in synthesizer heaven :D

Yes, I quite agree. Synth1, with the various fx, eq and extra mod routings can cover ground which Elek7ro doesn't - and Synth1's got at least 8000 more patches than Elek7ro (some pretty decent ones amongst them).

My argument wasn't a general 'Elek7ro is teh best synth', rather, it was directed toward bassdrive's comment that Synth1's basic synth engine is better than Elek7ro's - I think that there are some quasi-objective criteria by which one can judge the various qualities of the synth engines and on such criteria Elek7ro wins out.

And having typed its name out several times now, I can also say that Elek7ro wins on the most irritating use of unconventional spelling ;)
