In anycase what if 2 or maybe even 4 people make changes to the exact same parameter at the same time when collaborating. Whose edits take priority?
v10,

Let me add my speculation to all the others. It is collaborative, but not real-time. A new part would be in the project, available to all, once it has been processed by the server.

As for synching among several users, that problem has been solved for years by PIM's like Outlook, which can sync large amounts of email, calendaring and contact data among many simoultaneous users. A simple time-stamp could be used to give the current user priority. Also, I think there will be a way to real-time chat with others in the group? If not, we have tons of chat programs for that.

It seems a lot of the problems people propose are the same ones we encounter in real-time face-to-face bands. They all get solved, one way or another.

I haven't seen anything in this discussion that makes me doubt Ohm can offer a really nice app to do something many of us would love to see.

I am, of course, a little taken back by the "fee-per-note" aspect, especially if they insist on charging for false notes.

Audacity, for instance, "chops" the audio in 1MB files as it's recorded in order to manipulate it quickly. I guess the audio will be sent in small packages to the server as you record it.

Also, one can expect some kind of lossless compression like Flac. Or you can even work with provisional compressed audio and merge the definitive files later.
Hi all you KVRists

"spaceman" was worring a little about the pricing: We'll not tell for instance what will be the rates and how they'll work, as we want to keep the surprise to the end. But we'll obviously keep Ohm Force's tradition on providing a quite affordable pricing.
RiffWorks already do much of the same as the features you are suggesting, albeit with a focus on guitarists/singers, not producers/composers/keyboards.

And Riffworks is currently free(-ish).
I hope you plan to compete on the pricing ;-)

As for using amazon cloud - good idea.
But why not go with bittorrent? The second the same files are to be distributed to many people, bittorrent will win every time.
But you already thought of that, didn't you :-)

Why not license LogMeIn hamachi technology for the UDP hole-punching; its SO hard to get all the potential users to figure out how to open ports in their firewalls=

Great news I love the idea of working fast with the people in my band, or just get help from people from the community.

Hopes it:

1- follows the easy and light philosophy of Reaper, Energy XT or Mutools. I hate all the work you need just to insert a track in Cubase, but I love fast startups (slow ones are so Windows XP) and my USB pen.

2- it does have notation as I am sure I will not play/record anything to anyone unless I get a score or a tablature. Some chords/rhythm slashs notepad would also be quite helpfull for jazz and the like...

3-it does have a easy workflow/tools (eg step sequencer)to scketch and warness the creativity that come from a group.

4- It is priced like Mutools ;), or at least like eXT/Reaper. It would be specially useful for a band, a big community and my wallet.

5- Tools, workflow, interface and price are the most important featues IMO.

7- Someone from ohm is actually reading and considering this.

(8- is too much ask for a linux (that is a fast startup) version?)

Personally if it is reaper like with a few extras (online, notation, step sequencer like, auto coloring in the tracks/items...) I will be happy. A bundled version with plug in would be cool too.

May I suggest a cheap Ipad/Android app that will let us hear/preview/add notes to the updates anytime anywhere. Quite a revenue boost it seems ;).

You must have very exacting standards!!! I've got it down to just double-clicking a blank area on the Track View... (adds a MIDI track instantly for me, or a simple right-click Add Audio/MIDI, seems as fast as EnergyXT2 in this regard)

I think the only way you can see will be to give it a try once it comes out but it sounds like they are planning for heavy traffic.

Well i did exagerate, but just a bit :D.

While I came from real guitars and some real gear that I dont have problem in understanding and I can put something fast in Reaper or XT, the few times I tried I barely could get sounds out of Cubase or Sonar, probably it is my pacience that fades aways to fast, still that dont happens with the others. Plus I really dont have the time need to learn and configure such DAWs.

Meybe with use and habit they are as fast, but it take too much time and energy for that.

Didnt noticed this before...
Ohm Force wrote: "neverone" asked "How the plugin hosting will be handled?". The Ohm Studio will be bundled with a collection of integrated effects/instruments that will cover music production's basic needs. We're talking about some Ohm effects you already know, and a few brand new ones. So all Ohm Studio users will have/share these units, there won't be compatibility/setup issues about it. Of course you'll be able to use any third-party VST plug-in, but in this case all session members will have to own the plug-ins in question. It's what already happens when someone share a DAW's (any) project with a friend: the friend's DAW will locally search for a registered version of each one of the commercial plug-ins contained in the project. And there's no way to make it differently: 99% of commercial plug-ins' licenses are individual, so if you purchased a Camel Audio Alchemy it does not give your friends the right to eventually use it for free. So to clearly answer neverone's question, there won't be "hosted plug-ins", the effects your Ohm Studio will be able to use will be those installed in your computer.

Still my friend does have the right to use his plug in in my song...
It isnt possible to, at least, just get a steam with/without the plug in, or just it render in the final cut.

What I mean is, even if I cant use or touch in his plug in parameters and or edit them he should be able to give his contribution with the plug in that he owns and like, and we get "his final" version for the contribution. Even if that may not be as smooth as it is using only OS plug in. Think in something like Guitar Rig, it will be very important for guitar/bass players, but why would any other guy need it, or a VSTi and all the already made presets for keyboard players that guitar drummer s singers etc... dont need. Any other way and it will be hard to do more that a few projects on it, it will be a side DAW (that or are you already getting hate mails from 3º party plug in creators? ;))

Anyway it is good to ear that "The Ohm Studio will be bundled with a collection of integrated effects/instruments that will cover music production's basic needs. We're talking about some Ohm effects you already know, and a few brand new ones." Hope it doesnt add to much to the price, but it seems one need to hope that they are enough for their needs. All the most complete DAWs like Sonar PE and the like are out of reach for most people and hard to justifies for those who dont use that much the OC for his music work/hobby.

Plus today it is relatively easy to get ALL your band members with a (cheap) interface (which in most cases already brings a DAW LE software, that will let you record and use their VSTs and send you the WAVs) and a inexpensive software program, but very hard to get them all getting a full Sonar, Live FL...copy or even Orion. Although it seems it needs to be competitive with such DAWs, so you can get must of the fx/instruments you need.

Sorry for the babbling it just looks like you need something good enough for everybody, and keep it inexpensive enough so it can reach quite a few bodys. Which would be really great for us :D.

Althought Ohm plug ins arent as expensive as many out there and quite good, so I am hopefull. If the DAW is creative/easy as the plugs ... it good to just think of it.

Will the new plugins be exclusive to Ohm Studio or available separately like your other products?

Just to say that they have updated the community session of the site, not much new info but worth a look IMO.

Just to share some of their re-afirmations(?), as I am really interested in news about this.
#The Ohm Studio workstation is composed of a standalone real-time collaborative music making application (DAW/sequencer) in addition to a web-based collaboration platform and a music driven online "cohmunity". We're also talking about real time collaborative MIDI/audio editing, envelopes, a piano roll, audio effects, and virtual instruments: the very same tools we computer based musicians already enjoy, but that you'll now be able to use with your friends, online.
# How much will it cost? This will be announced after we have completed beta testing. Music innovation should not be only for the rich, so be ready for competitive and fair prices.
# How many people will be able to work together? Technically, up to 256. But we don't recommend this many, unless you and your 255 partners are paranormal maestros doped on kryptohnite.
# Is Ohm Studio supposed to replace current sequencers such as Ableton Live, Logic, Cubase and etc in someone's setup? Yes and no. These applications have features that you will not find in the Ohm Studio and will certainly be more suited to certain aspects of the musical production process. However, the Ohm Studio has its own strengths and innovations in term of usability and ease of use. And as a DAW with realtime musical collaboration, it's THE choice to be made.

I guess it really is not for everybody (at least for now), but it may very well be for me as I still hope they include notation and a step sequencer.

Anyway ther indication of fair price, innovative/good interface (love S1) and all the basic tools, plus online. Seems really good, lets see if they deliver to their promises.

For the no belivers, a new official video (not a very interesting one).

It should be interesting, depending on the price.

Stepping in to concur with the desire for a native Linux client. PLEASE!

Also for those of you asking for a step sequencer: Why...? Step sequencers are the red-headed stepchild of all forms of note entry. I say don't bother, Ohmforce.

Notation would be nice, though.
