Its 'make your mind up time' again folks! .... time for you to cast your votes for the best StringZ/StringZ2 only track. :)

See thread... http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=283527

Please listen to all the tracks before casting a vote ... I know it takes a while, but its the only fair way to do things ... Criteria for your voting decision is up to you, but I ask that you take at least some account of the range, nature, use of the synths sounds in your decisions.

So here's how!

@@Go to the online folder ....
http://www.4shared.com/dir/21373365/665 ... lenge.html

Here you can listen to individual tracks, and read accompanying notes re. what what was used in their making. You can download individual tracks as you wish.

Alternatively, from the same link/folder, you can also download the zipped folder '00 - StringZ tracks.zip'
This will be a lot quicker than downloading individual tracks, You will then have all the tracks in one place to at your leisure, .... think about it as your free album .... a gift in exchange for making a contribution to the comp!

You can also access the tracks via a playlist here ....

http://www.4shared.com/play/38683269/e5 ... ay_10.html

( **** note **** if you experience difficulty accessing the above files, dont give up, try a different browser ... IE seems to work better than some browsers. )

How to vote .... You can cast a vote for your fave 4 tracks, in allocations of 5, 3, 2, and 1 points.

Please allocate all your votes in a single post in the following format ...

Track xyz - artistname - 5
Track yxz - artistname - 3
Track xqy - artistname - 2
Track zxy - artistname - 1

Reviews, however brief, are always welcome, but even if you can only find the time to add a short comment, then please do! ...it keeps the thread alive, and encourages others to listen/vote. I will do a review when I can grab a bit of time to do the job justice.

**Closing date for votes will be Mon 17th of May!

....Enjoy the music! :)

Note .... I will tally the votes and post updates as the votes come in.... and I'm sure there will be the usual willingness to correct me if I get anything wrong  :)

I just had a quick listen to all the tracks and I'm shocked... I believe never before in any other OSC partecipants have been able to go way beyond the apparent possibilities of the chosen vst as they have this time :-o
The fact that it was close to impossible to create the freakin' drum sounds everybody seems to be so obsessed with (even if the talented newcomer did make some good ones for his fantastic track) allowed for a touching and beautiful melodic side to come out of the musicians involved. Impressive.

Some people I deeply hate:
1 - Tattie for only allowing four votes... how am I supposed to choose only four?? I mean, did you listen to them tracks?
2 - Yeager, you're a fu**ing bastard, nobody should be allowed to be that good.
3 - V'ger for making his track so short - such an incredibly beautiful space soundscape should go on for 10 minutes at least, please tell me you have or are working on a longer version and you'll let me have it...

Question for Dwsel: does the word cover mean the music is not yours?

Well Mac, sice you hate 3 of us, and you cant vote for yourself, You already have 4 less to consider .... so 4 votes should be more than adequate! :hihi:

Yes, melody is not mine. I wanted to make special, string orchestral piece, but my poor mood and lack of time caused progress to stop and forced me to play in a different way something that I know a bit. It's a cover of both: cover and original.
My song's title 'Comforting song' comes from exact translation of original title.
The words (roughly translated) go:

Don't cry oh baby, don't shed your tears
'cause life is as it is
I can give you a little star,
that's what I can afford today

Throw under pillow all of your dreams
let them wait for better days
Let them give good results after few years
You'll gonna be as rich as me

Chorus:
So, wash your tears, don't you cry
'cause every little child knows
Good weather is for rich people
for not rich ones you never know...

and so on...
I would avoid putting links to youtube videos of these songs, because I guess my cover is not very lively, and well performed when compared to the original songs and I wouldn't get a single vote then :hihi:

Actually, I kind of hate all the others as well, considering I'll have to chose the synth for osc 17

@dwsel: thanks for explaining, I think your version is certainly capable of sustaining a match with the original, even if I don't know it :)

Cheers  I too wish more could have been done but was kind of blocked and realized too late what could be done with the pads and mod wheel etc.

I might well pick this piece up one day but now I got some new toys to play with, you know how these things work.. ;)

Comfort Song - Dwsel: Wow, it opens up for a brief moment, bell-like, then that 'bowed' or 'woodwind' instrument arrives and right away, i want to cry. I really like the lyrics you posted. This song is flat-out beautiful.

Complexity - HiEnergy: Wow; just wow. I'm onto the 2nd song and am wondering how in the world we're all supposed to vote this month. This is flat-out brilliant. At about 2:00 it really changes up; as if to say, 'i've been hanging out on the magical chord change thread in the Music Theory forum section.' ;) Seriously, this change-up is beautiful.

FREAKS OF NATURE - Mac of BIOnighT: Ok, here's a big change-up. We're going from Europe to the Serengeti. Oh, i'm digging that plucking out there on the left, then the oboe front and center. This is incredible sci-fi music! This is a great counterpoint to the other two so far. Mac! It's too short.

Io - V'ger: This one opens up in epic, theatrical fashion. We're now at some undefined location on the Eurasion Land Mass. That's it - another splendid - albeit brief piece from V'ger.

James0Tuscon - deofaropario: The ampsim you'd mentioned seems to really add some 'acid rock' vibe to the tone here. We're either way out in the 'American Southwest,' or we're in Asia with this one. Maybe it's a song of the Pacific Ocean. This is captivating stuff.

No Stringz attached - HiEnergy: This one sounds like a fairgrounds at twilight. They're getting ready to shut the rides down. Everyone should load up on cotton candy and popcorn before the concession stands are closed. It's just got that 'Coney Island at Dusk' vibe. One can practically breathe the salty air.

Overture from a Marmite Field - Yeager: It could easily be that i've not been paying attention, but this sounds like a departure for Yeager. In any event, this one grabs me from the get-go, and doesn't let go; and that's a welcome thing. This is some seriously fine-sounding neo-classical. (How are we supposed to vote?)

StringZ Expressions - GilJ: If this is your first entry, welcome to the OSC. Wow, someone made a kick drum!... and other percussion bits! This one is haunting. It seems to go from place to place, yet it doesn't move; and i mean that in a good way. It's fantastic!

Strung Up - tattiemannie: Ok, here's one from Musagi. You're mixing Scottish folk motifs into these contest entries, aren't you? Not to overuse the word, but this is brilliant, man! It's especially impressive that you did it in Musagi. I love that little program; and even said that it might be good for an OSC, but then i realized that it's probably better as a self-contained program (with its own internal instruments); because it really seems like VSTIs cause the thing to crash right and left. Good job!

waiting room - objectman: He uses stock presets only, and knocks the ball out of the park. This is incredible. It seems like romantic music from the turn of the last century (19th into 20th). It's like a tone poem, where two or more musical eras are bridged.

These pieces are all winners. This is another one where, when voting it might just be names from a hat. This is going to require more listening and thought. It would definitely be another month to either a) put the songs into an app like last month or b) make a CD like we did with Felix. Of course, that's easy for me to sit here and type; but i mean it about the pieces. Wow, just wow.

Anyway, i'll be voting later.

On the tundra.. Yeah I like that. :)

Stringz_Expressions-GilJ - 5
Hands down, my winning pick. Not only did you get some polished sound out of StringZ, but you somehow coaxed a convincing drumkit out of it as well.

Overture From a Marmite Field - OSCXV - Yeager - 3

I don't have the slightest idea what a Marmite is, and don't tell me, because I'm sincerely hoping they are a very cute, fuzzy, entirely mythical thing. The Overture makes me want to see the whole opera. Or puppet show. Or whatever the Marmites are doing in their Field that needs an Oveture.

Complexity - HiEnergy - 2

Opening like a spirited conversation between a couple of Asian instruments, and then a moderated resolution. Lovely stuff.

Io - V'ger - 1

Love the vox humana, the very expressive pad strings, and the bona-fide space that this track brings.

Well, after listening to these again and again, i've yet got no real favorite. They're all great.

Other OSCs i've been involved in have not been quite so difficult in this regard.

So, i'm going to go with:

Strung Up - Tattiemannie 5

FREAKS OF NATURE - Mac of BIOnighT 3

Overture from a Marmite Field - Yeager 2

Io - V'ger 1

You all did a fantastic job. As a whole, these pieces comprise the kind of album one could listen to, over and over again. Kudos all around!

In my book, wherever anyone ends up in the voting; it doesn't matter; your pieces are all great.

Post

mrblitz000, are you sayin' you like these tracks? :hihi:

Post

Thanks, mrblitz, good start of the day for me :) And it's true, they make for a great album indeed :)

Cheers for the votes and comments guys :)

If you would like me to do an e-album of the comp, now would be a good time to think about info and pics/images you would like to have incorporated :)
