It's not a regular headphone plug that goes into the phone. An extra ring is used for the mic on the headset, maybe even some clever wiring for a button to pick up calls and hang up.
cheers - that makes sense - so any idea what the latency is like on this ??
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

Does that enable recording of audio?
Yes:

you wanna record a mic, instrument (guitar/bass) or line level (keyboard / mixer) ? In mono or stereo?

The latest version of Mikey (from Blue) has both a great microphone and line input. http://www.bluemic.com/mikey/

(Not sure if the new version is out yet. I have the old one (without line input), and I am very happy with it.

Yup. It also reads volume up/down messages from the headphones, and I happen to know that if you try to run a regular mic into it (which has normal wiring) it will not work. I rewired a Rode Videomic to go into mine, and it wouldn't turn off the phone's internal mic. Turns out it needs to be POWERING an electret mic to be happy, and it will power the Rode's element directly- for a somewhat lower-level signal that ought to respond to very loud stuff well.

Owle Bubo comes with an electret mic too- that one sounds crap compared to the Rode element, but it's way hotter. I plugged it in and drums killed the input, just splatted it into silence. The phone's internal mic will handle drum levels, though not well- I think the Rode element (being no louder than the internal mic) ought to handle loud sounds better. Haven't tested it though.

Video of the insides and element/cable needs for this (recorded with the Owle mic, NOT the Rode)

can anyone from IK answer

1.can the app run in the background, ie can you have music playing in the background (play along)

2.can the input be used to record into any recording app.

3.does it run on os 3.1.2.

4.does the app support user presets.

5.can the presets be backup on a MAC/PC

6.is there a computer editor.

ericj23 wrote:I'm looking at that thinking how does it work - there is sound card that uses the head phone jack to get signals in and out of the phone that does the processing? How does it do that ???
The headphone jack is I/O as the apple headphones have a mic built in. I suspect that's how they're doing it.

[edit]Oops, I see someone already answered this.
