Hi. I am looking for a good guitar compressor. My benchmark is Andy Summer's Police sound. Any suggestions?

Post

This guy has his head far up his as in his description of how compression works, but I believe the gear list if pretty accurate:

http://web.tiscalinet.it/andatta/effectspage.htm

It's more than you're probably looking for, but you should be looking for it:

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitube/interface/

It comes with an emulation of the Dyna Comp, Phase 90, Electric Mistress, and an analog delay that looks suspiciously like the MXR Analog Delay, though the page doesn't say it is . I know Andy used a lot of Marshalls on tour, but I'm not sure what he used in the studio but I've heard he used a Roland JC-120. Anyway, Amplitube has a bunch of different great Marshall emulations as well as a great (the best by far IMO) emulated JC-120.

Oh yeah, and you'll have to plug in a Strat or Telecaster. If that doesn't get you pretty damn close, nothing will.

The best compressor for guitar I've ever tried is Sonalksis SV-315. At least on clean sounds.

The JC-120 is just SPOT ON. I own one and Amplitube 3 nailed it.
Now the proud owner of an avid 11 Rack, Running Pro Tools 10.3.3 - for me it's heaven!

Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned Andy Summers. I am just looking for a good guitar compressor.

What compressor plugs do you currently have?

Post

I have some freeware ones. I don't want to bad mouth them becuase they are free but they don't sound that good on clean guitar.

Post

Have you tried Fabfilter's Pro-C yet? 3 different modes and works great (IMO) for either electric or acoustic.

I pretty much only use the T-Racks Fairchild for guitars now, I just go straight to the El-Guitar preset and just adjust the threshold

since it's free to evaluate, i would try major tom for clean guitars. it's an "auto comp" in that it automatically sets the attack and release according to the audio signal, and it should actually be one of the better choices for clean guitar.

i have the waves ssl 4000 bundle, so i use the channel strips from that. the compressor on the ssl channel is real similar to the dbx but uses a manual release so takes a little more dialing in.

I'd suggest you try ArtsAcoustic's CL series. It may cost a bit but It really fits into my workflow.

deLaManchas SiedeArm and D2(free) are very nice ones as well.
(DelaMancha have other compressors as well but I only got SideArm and D2 installed so I won't comment on the new ones.)

Someone mentioned the IK fairchild emu, I'll add a second in that collection the "opto" comp. There is a 10 day trial and it's not as expensive as some of the others mentioned. I think it is terrific on guitar, might even help you to get that "andy" sound
