Hi folks,

This kind of lick gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it.

And I wish I could play it.

You can hear them here:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/nayt4yrjyzz/LICK.mp3

The first one is kind of different from the other three, but it gives me the same sensation.

What is this?

Is this a famous quote?

How do I play this?

What is making it sound like it does? (special notes??)

Thanks a lot. :help:

I am not really sure what your question is but the first three samples are typical acoustic bass and the last sounds like a fretless. The notes are pretty easy to transcribe and they are not special. A lot of the sound is specifically related to the timbre of the instrument(s) and the player's style as those notes will sound completely different on a piano.

Blues-based lines.

The last three notes are famous. It's the minor 3rd, up a half step to the major 3rd, then up a sixth to the tonic.

It helps to know how to play the major pentatonic scale.

On the piano, it's easiest if the minor third is a black key. You just do something which would be considered poor technique among classical pianists; drag the same finger down to the white key.

If you really want to get good at this style, listen to some of the masters of blues. I really like Dr. John.

The blurring of major and minor tonalities.
