Cantabile & Edirol Orchestral Question

Hi all,

I been reading up on Cantabile and it's features and I must say I'm very impressed!

I've been using my laptop for live work for a while and I'm actually using Cakewalk's Sonar as a VST host. It's served it's purpose up to now but, not being a dedicated host for live work, I'm starting to find some limitations with this set up. For starters I can't specify key ranges for my different softsynths. I use key splits and layers copiously and I'm thinking Cantabile is ideal!

Now, I'd like to use Edirol Orchestral plugin in my set up but I understand the VST version has problems remembering it's patch settings. This doesn't happen when using the DX version. Edirol says it's not a bug! Go figure...

Anyway, has anyone used this plugin in Cantabile? If so, does it work well or is there a workaround to this "bug" in Cantabile.

Thanks for any insights.

PS Will be purchasing Cantabile Performer whether Edirol Orchestral works in it or not! :D

I am not sure if there is a workaround as I don't know the Edirol orchestral VST.

The usual way Cantabile handles VST sound setup is VST presets (*.fxp). Most VST' suppport this.

Some VST's do not support single presets - often these have own internal sound browsers (commercial plugins...) - but VST preset banks (*.fxb) , Here a bank is one setup. There is an option in Cantabile Performer to manage this situation when using subsessions by the option -> subsession behavior -> entire bank.

Maybe some VST's out do not even support VST preset banks... last chance is to use program changes. This can also be an option for plugins with internal soundbrowsers if you can address its sounds via program changes. In Cantabile Performer you can use triggers for that. However it's an inconvenient process... it would be better to have a second choice here directly in the rack slots as all GM and related stuff usually understands program changes...

If none of these 3 options meet the Edirol thing I don't know...

Thanks, I'll have to look into the triggers.

I've had a quick look at the triggers features and I'm not sure I understand it fully. Would triggers allow me to automatically send a program change message to a softsynth upon loading the session? If this is so then my problem is solved!

Post

Yep, you can set a trigger to send a program change on session load and send this to a rack containing your softsynth.

You can send CC values the same way. But to do so for a set of CC's alike GM standard on multiple midi channels is some crazy work... but it's theoretically possible too...

Triggers is an advanced feature only available in Cantabile Preformer - unfortunately... you have to buy the most expensive edition of Cantabile then.

Lovely, thanks! I have no problem purchasing the Performer edition, it's a great piece of software for at a very decent price.

...welcome to the club then... :D

It's done! Purchased the Performer edition and I can safely say that using triggers works for Edirol HQ Orchestral.

Thanks again!

Glad that things work for you.

I try to help whenever possible. Cantabile is a good live host - maybe sometimes a bit technical. :hihi:
