acousticglue wrote:How does ST actually work? Is this a VSTi? Do I play the sounds? Are the grooves able to be manipulated as in leave out the bass or keys or guitar and play along? Is there a beat slicer or tempo you just midi map to in your DAW? What's the advantage of getting loops over multi samples? Thanks
Briefly...

1. Yes, SampleTank is a VSTi. It's a sampler, or more accurately a "ROMpler" since it doesn't actually sample itself. What you're buying with this Group Buy is your choice of sound sets to play in SampleTank.

2. The "Construction Kits" packs (which are 6 of the 30 choices), I believe, contain a number of separate loops - bass, synth, drums, etc - which are grouped together. So with those, you can play the individual parts by themselves, drop out the bass, etc. as you say. The "Grooves" package (9 of the 30 choices) are pure loops, primarily drum loops.

3. Both of those loop pack types have the full loops on one MIDI note. SampleTank will automatically lock to host tempo when you play that note. The packs also have the sliced loops on chromatic notes above that. I believe they all come with separate .mid files for playing the slices back in time if you want them. So you can work with them either way that works for you. I do not believe that SampleTank has an actual "beat slicer" of its own; the loops all come pre-sliced.

4. Advantage of loops over multi-samples is entirely down to your working methods. At some level, it's sort of apples and oranges; they're not really trying to do the same thing. Multi-samples are pure "instruments"; you load them up and play on the keyboard. So if you want to compose your own parts entirely, you need the multi-sample packs; loops don't work that way.

Hope at least some of that was useful! You kind of asked a bunch of pretty big fundamental questions all at once, so any answer is necessarily going to be a little shallow unless it runs on for many pages...

They are visionaries! They are wise and far-seeing!

Or maybe they have seen IK GBs in the past...

Or maybe they are GB w----s!

As a newbie to this GB, I just want to confirm the registration process. I've registered my ST product on th IK Media website. Are there any other registrations (ex. sample packs or loops) that need to be done?

Ps.
This is such a fantastic deal, I'm going in for seconds!! :)

Nope. You've registered that, so you'll see the SampleTank 2 XT in your downloads. You click "Multibox" for your first Xpansion Tank, then the others (five now, hopefully soon SIX more) will show up under "Promotions"

I know there's a long step-by-step here, we can repost if you need it though if you are in for seconds and seem to have the hang of it you probably don't!

Thanks!

Is it possible to have any kind of round robin action going on with imported samples with SampleTank?

I have a set of acoustic keys where each key has up to 8 samples. I was able to easily import one of the samples for each note into ST but saw no way to use the additional samples in a RR sort of way.

Thanks.

'Fraid not, there's no round-robin in ST2.5 as far as I know.

I would suspect there are lots of good ones in both. I have the first, and there are some really sweet mood-setting synth sounds in it. Cinematik collection has some interesting stuff too.
Jesse J wrote:I have my Axon MIDI guitar system (not connected atm), the acoustic guitars will probably work nice on that, but will the electric? Is it more riffs and licks oriented, or "straight" tones?
All "straight" tones. I'm sure you already know that you must make sure that you change the pitch bend range to +/-12 for each electric guitar preset you want to play via the Axon. You can get some cool lead sounds from this library especially if you double the sounds with your real guitar (i.e. record the MIDI and the guitar audio at the same time). Process the audio track with Amplitube or other amp sim software.
Thanks for the reply!

Congrats Jesse J! Being a father is the best job in the world IMHO. Enjoy every minute because they grow up quick (my little girl just turned two last week...doesn't seem possible!). Now go use your new sounds to write him a song...maybe a lullaby, you'll need a few of those! :D

Congrats, Jesse J! I'd say write a song to commemorate but I know from experience you will be VERY busy. :) In a great way, though. Enjoy, it is a wonderful experience.
