I should add that if you do have the SampleTron product, getting the extra fill-in would make sense. The Squids Tron Collection Vol 1 was a real gem - possibly the finest product Sonic Reality ever created. (As I said, I happily paid $180 for it when it first came out, and I'm eagerly waiting for the day Vol 2 surfaces.)

Mellotrons were/are essentially early samplers. They have banks of tapes inside. When you press a note, it plays the tape for that note. The instruments are classics, but they're rare - and they're horrible for maintaining. Squids was one of the experts who was brought in to deal with the 'Trons for many artists.

The ones he sampled for Squids' Tron Collection Vol 1 include the exact Mellotrons used by Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Neil Finn, Tom Petty, U2, and many others.

These sounds are the real deal. And the fact that this set is merely copies of the tapes from inside these instruments doesn't matter, since the original instruments themselves are simply those exact same recordings!

BUT... as mentioned earlier, if you DON'T have SampleTron, check the details carefully before selecting the Tron set. If it really is the "fill-in", it won't have the important stuff, as all the major tape sets were included in both the Squids' Collection Vol 1 and SampleTron.

And if you already have Squids Collection, there's nothing new here at all.

SampleTank really is a very quick workstation. With a little bit of research/knowledge of the tools used on the original recording and some ingenuity I was able to do a Floydesque take on the "Shine on You" Part I sounds in just a few minutes only using instruments from these Xpansion Tanks with no external processing of any kind (limited myself on purpose).

I used sounds from Vintage Keys, Cinematik, and SampleOB Xpander (and only one from each for the pad, one from SampleOB Xpander for lead). Mind the few seconds of silence at the beginning - I also only took a few minutes to tweak the export Smile

The reason the demos you've heard are focusing on unusual effects is because that is (in my opinion) the Cinematic Collection's strong point. You might want to check out Symphonic Strings, which seems to have a bigger emphasis on strings rather than effects. I don't have that one, so can't comment.
Here's something I improvised real quick using the Cinematic Collection strings;
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3049335/Cinematic_strings.mp3

For me this doesn't cut it for strings, and neither does Garritan (for me). I'd recommend East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra, even if you can only afford the Silver Edition. You can always upgrade later. However, this might not be within your budget. (Note: I'm an EWQLSO Gold Plus user, which is in a completely different price class from SampleTank).

For new readers, here is my demo of the aspects of the Cinematic Collection that are more exciting to me personally:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3049335/Jon%20C ... ration.mp3

Edit: It is definitely possible to get better results with the Cinematic Collection strings than my improvisation. I was just improvising for a few min on my MIDI controller using presets (sometimes with a reverb or a delay added)

I tried and succeeded at only picking traditional orchestral sounds only from Cinematik and within a few minutes had a decent combi and multi-out setup to do this small piece. Forgive the crashes in the wrong place and other nits here and there. There's layered strings, brass, and winds with a lame percussion track - all from Cinematik only:

Some of the Beach Boy vocals done up quickly, starts "in the manner of the church" (a capella - I have to try to brush up on the true Italian meanings seeing that our HQ is in Italy) then in a mix then back to a cappella. I've added bass from the Bass tank, organ from the Vintage Keys, and a drum loop from the Vintage Rock loops for the midsection "mix":

Here is a quick jam with several libraries involved:

The pad is from Cinematik, layered with some stuff from World music. The hand drum is from World, as is the psaltery. The bowed bass is from Symphony Strings 2. The guitar is my Strat through a non-IK product (sorry). It is just a two-chord ambient sort of thing, and I am no pro, but a lot of people might do this sort of thing with SampleTank.

Here's a dry run on the Hip Hop instrument pack. It's only the tip. You could ride out a career with just this set.
www.4shared.com/audio/mH09rixa/hip_it.html
Someone requested a pop demo using the Hip Hop set because that person wasn't a fan of hip hop. I made an old sounding piece because the Hip Hop sounds are old. Hip Hop likes to recycle. if you're looking for hip hop... btw, which GM set recreates old analogue like that?

androidlove
I filled up all 16 slots for this retro pop piece using the hip hop set. Uses just the effects that loaded with the parents. If you have a cheese allergy, you may want to avoid this.

Whereas the bass break in hip it was garbage, this one is the bomb (please, someone get that).

Thought, I want to share my work with you guys. Maybe it would help people to decide, if they want to join the GB. And also it's a "thank you" for IKMM and SR for it. So they know what people do with their sets Wink

It's done with a few freebies for the electronic-sounds and mastering, the rest is done with these packs of the GB:

  • Piano Collection 2
  • Symphony Strings 2
  • World Grooves

I'm using a Kit from Acoustic Drums 2 that I edited to be a bit tighter, keys are from the Piano Collection 2 and a little spice from the Cinematic Collection. Just 3 channels used, bass comes from my Roland Fantom G as I haven't got the Bass xpansion (yet).
Here's a little screen-shot of ST while playing this:

I used Toraverb for the big reverb. The built-in ST reverb would probably have done the trick just as well, but I happened to have Toraverb in my Aux so I just used it...

To celebrate 7x1 I share what I have been doing with ST the last days. All sounds are from the GB, the title celebrates us reaching 7 at this very moment!

That would be the ARP Prosoloist flute with some pitch modulation. I posted my patch list here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/965632/sampletank.JPG (I never got around to use the congas tho)

Its from the Sampletank XT pack. So is the organ and the flute. The "salsa" piano in the first part of the song is "Upright" from piano collection tho. Really like that one, but it didnt cut through towards the end, so I kept HQ Free Piano there, I wrote with that one. Thats what amazes me with what I got from this deal. You are writing from the second you load a sound and press a key.

Here's a simple piece, Eight for one, I created with one instance of Sampletank and every sound used is from this group buy. It uses 2 sounds from the OB library, 2 Vintage rock grooves, a bass from the bass collection, 3 guitars from the electric guitar collection, and one sound from the vintage keys collection.

I used the first patch in hip hop instruments - electric sweep (2.05) and some beats out of Downtempo Electronica Tempos (2.50)to enhance a basic backing track posted by Scuzzo at the Les Paul forum jamzone

(I also added some Xils3 Le action, Minimogue luxus and Absynth (organ sound) as well as my Strat into Le Poulin Le456 with cab impulses, effects bluetube effects especially the Tempo Delay effect from the audiomidi nobrainer and BooteqMk2, Ferric TDS.)

torgo wrote:On the Piano Collection 2 - there are only THREE new parent sounds not included in our originals, and two of them (Granduation Day and Acoustic Grand) are duplicates of each other.
Thanks. So just two, huh? I would gladly take the pack for those two pianos if I knew that I would get some use out of them.

I might be more relieved to add 2 pianos to my collection than I would be to sort through a bunch of OmniSynth doubles. I wish that Squids had a detailed list of where the Omnisynth instrument actually come from. I can understand that creating the ultimate GM set might be done wisely by taking the best examples you have of each instrument from other packs. I just wish I knew which instruments might actually have new samples.
torgo wrote:Another hard question will be whether we want any of the grooves collections in R.A.W. format (as our esoundz bonus) instead of in SampleTank format.
I was lucky to have acquired the whole set of RAW loops in a previous Group Buy about 2-3 years ago. I can assure you that you DO want to also get the RAW version of these loops. I am really happy to have both, since they each serve different purposes. When loaded into a loop browser (I use DrumCore), the REX versions of the loops can be auditioned very quickly, which is essential to keep the momentum in your creativity.
torgo wrote:And another one: do we go with the Sonik Capsules: Studio Drums set from esoundz or go with the Acoustic Drums Collection from IK? They're apparently the same exact sound set, so I certainly don't want to do both. The Sonik Capsules version can convert for other samplers besides SampleTank, so it might be a better option - depending on what other choices from esoundz we'd have to pass up to get it.
They are both SR products. With all the new Drum Masters 2 material now available, these drums pale in comparison due to lack of velocity variations and round robins. If you're going to take it, however, you might not want to be with out the Drums Collection 1 which only come in the Xpansion Pack version. But then again, the Sonik Capsule has drums that were recorded a couple of years later and might have more velocity layers (I don't have that one, so I'm not sure).
torgo wrote:For that matter, I may have to think about simply buying the Sonik Capsules guitar 3-pack ($87 from esoundz) after this group buy is over. If I did, that would scratch the Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, and Bass collections from my IK list... (It may sound odd to spend $87 to save three choices in a $50 group buy, but I could use epointz to get it. And again, the Sonik Capsules versions work with many other samplers besides SampleTank, where the ExpansionTank versions are SampleTank only.)
No, no, no! Don't do that! Each of the guitar packs and the bass pack include most or all of the Sonik Capsules, plus you get the original collections. Trust me, you don't want to miss the guitars and basses from the earlier collections.

If anyone hasn't grabbed the Guitars and Basses, it is worth joining one more time just to get them. There are some very useful instruments therein. If I was only allowed to keep 2 packs, and had to throw away all the rest of them, the ones I would keep are the Bass and Electric Guitar Collections... even though I play real bass and guitar and have some great vintage instruments. Those packs have some really nice sounds and are very useful.
torgo wrote:Plus... Squids says we'll be hearing about a whole new group buy next week, so patience might turn out to be a big-time virtue here. The next group buy might alter our choices. We have 30 days to decide our IK choices, so there's no rush. Waiting for more info could be a big help in making those strategic decisions.
I think the next GB is Kontakt (i.e. Infinite Player) related.
Somewhere in the background zedd

Post

Thanks for all the info, Zedd. I should have mentioned that I already have the original Guitar Collection. All I'd miss is the original bass collection, which is a low priority for me (someone else plays bass, so that's not my department anyway).

The quality of the two extra piano sounds is a question mark for me too. Remember my crack about the "massive" 150 meg piano samples? That was referring to Granduation Day / Acoustic Grand. So based purely on sample size, it ought to be the most detailed patch in the set.

If the new ones (and their child presets) really are smoking hot patches, I might join you on that one and get it too. Piano is my primary instrument, so I wouldn't want to miss out on the best piano of the set.

(That's another reason why I'm so hot to get full info on all the esoundz bonus choices. If it turns out there really is a gem that makes it worth signing on a fourth time, then there's nothing to decide from IK. We'd get all 30 sets with two unused "slots" to spare.)

Oh, I *KNOW* the RAW versions of these sets would be Good Things. My point is that we might be better off getting the RAW versions instead and skipping the SampleTank versions.

What advantage is there to having them in SampleTank format?

Post

Random thoughts warning! (it's not aimed at anyone)

The guitars are surprisingly good. Of course they don't compare to the higher end Kontakt libraries... well, they are different. I like both. I just remember the first time I tried the guitars. I still remember how impressed I was.

There is so much variety in pianos, that the piano collection can't hurt.

The RAW stuff is good and well edited. And it's different from what you hear from other developers. The loops in ST format take more time to use, but you can easily edit them. You can do the same with REX loops, except with the ST loops it is very easy to mess with the MIDI. And then there are the effects in ST!

To anyone looking to build a sound library: You can't go wrong here! It's not expensive, and you get so much for your $50!

Thank you! I didn't know I could edit zones individually. This forum is great for support.

(Although I still think that Ik/SonicReality should fix it. It takes maybe a minute to fix it. But if 2000 people chose the world instruments, than it will take 2000 minutes together. If IK/SonicReality upload a fixed version. It means that 1999 minutes wouldn't be wasted. And that's roughly 33 hours.)

Post

Rev - do you have the new Piano Collection 2?

The issue that Zedd and I face is that we both already have the original, so we already have all but three of the samples - and two of those three new ones are identical.

If somebody has played the Piano Collection 2 extensively, how good are the Granduation Day, Dyno My Road, and Acoustic Grand patches? Are they better than the other ones in the collection?

(We need to decide if we'd rather miss out on a full set of something else just to get those few extra samples. Zedd seems to be leaning towards doing it anyway. For now, I'm leaning towards trying something new instead. But if that new 150 meg Acoustic Grand and Granduation Day totally blow away the other grand pianos in the set, I'll change my mind and get it too.)

zedd wrote: Exactly. So you might as well just grab whichever of the freebie packs is of most interest to you. No further choices will be added to that list. Waiting is unnecessary, unless you are just holding off for the pleasure of having a new library to download on another day.

Unfortunately, the DownloadableSoundz site counts your code as redeemed the moment you start the process, so you really need to know what you plan to get ahead of time. That gives me all the more reason to wait!

(Edit: In other words, I'm not waiting for Squids to announce the extra bonus. I'm waiting for clarity on the options that are already available.

The extra announcement I'm waiting for is from Peter, letting us know if "and beyond" means 9x1, 10x1 etc and if any extra choices will become available through IK.)

For example, eDrummist just mentioned he's looking forward to downloading the Tron add-on pack. That isn't even on the list posted on the esoundz site!

So what other choices are there that we don't know about? Have YOU gone through DownloadableSoundz yet to get your extra choice from esoundz? What were the other options?

Here's one reason why it's so important:

If items that are on my "wish list" are available as bonus choices, I'd join the group buy a fourth, fifth, sixth etc time just to get them.

The rationale is that if I'd be willing to spend $50 on those sets anyway, I might as well help out the Group Buy and push us closer to 7000, 8000, etc even though I'd already have absolutely all the choices from IK.

So please, if anyone knows all the other options not listed on the esoundz page I posted before, by all means let us know what they are!

So, for anyone else who is interested in that phantom "1 gig exclusive" set, it's the SampleTank Rare Vintage Collection Vol. 1.

And it's a GEM. Here's the full description:

This exclusive 1 gigabyte collection covers a range of popular vintage instruments from the 60's & 70's used by artists such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Yes, Genesis and many others. Featuring keyboards, synths, guitars, basses and drums many of which were owned by famous musicians of that era. Previously unreleased samples of the Prophet 10 that was used on Pink Floyd's The Wall and the Beach Boys' old B3 organ with white Leslie 122 cabinet, a vintage '62 Strat and P-Bass, drum kits in the style of Ringo, Bonham, Phil Collins and more!

Ummmm..... WOW !!!!!!! :o  :o

So it's not "previously unreleased"? That would be a bummer.

Thats correct but I don't think that it is the "1 gig exclusive" set that Squids was referring to. My guess is that he was referring to the Squids Tron Exclusive Extras. Which I guess is exciting if your into Mellotron sounds.

"So, for anyone else who is interested in that phantom "1 gig exclusive" set, it's the SampleTank Rare Vintage Collection Vol. 1.

And it's a GEM. Here's the full description:

Squids I have a disappointment about this. I got a manual download for my bonus entered by Allen as my download code did not work for whatever reason.

Well I chose SampleTank Rare Vintage Collection Vol. 1 and contains parent folders: Rare keys, Rare Strings, Guitar, Bass and Rare Synths...

but no drums at all.

i.e. no "drum kits in the style of Ringo, Bonham, Phil Collins and more" so I have to say this does not match the description I relied on to choose. I guess this is some oversight or snafu and not intentional and I am grateful for the group buy anyway, but I thought I would bring it to your attention.
