The only drawback I guess is resale as it's not Gibson branded.
drawback?

BERFAB wrote:Hey all. I turn 50 today, and my wife and kids surprised me over the weekend with a pristine Fender Strat circa 1994. I've had a Mexican Strat for years, but this thing is the real deal-plays and sounds like a dream. Been playing it since I unwrapped it!

My wife knows nothing about guitars, but over the years has really gone out of her way to get me some nice stuff. A few years back she got me an Alvarez Acoustic (C-model) which is an amazing thing of beauty. She also got me the aforementioned Mexican Strat, not realizing the difference. Still a great guitar, but side by side with the American model is really no comparison.

So I'm set. Unless, of course, I hit the lottery. Then it's a PRS dragon model or a Parker Fly. Or both. :hihi:

Happy Birthday dude, I'm not far behind you. :)

What a cool present.

Its nice to have a supportive partner isn't it, my girl also shares my musical experience with me. 8)

That's peachy Berfab, hope you have a great year!
hmm hink, I was sorta thinking he maybe might like to have a Gibson in future.
The guitar doesn't sound any better or worse for the branding at the end of the day, so cool to go with whichever he fancies, sorry.
I sorta half regret going for a mexican tele. It's still very nice though, have to get it out :)
I wonder what I want in here

Jack White often plays an Airline (Supro, Valco). They used to be sold at Montgomery Wards. They're being remade, but in wood this time-

I have the Twin Tone. I love it.

Never been a big PRS fan, too many compromises for my taste.
But this is different, David Grissom's signature model DGT.
The guy's got taste - he spec'd all the right little tweaks, basically it's a McCarty with the great PRS trem, nitro finish, special neck, Alnico II PUs, dual volume / single tone, perfectly tweaked tone / bleed caps ...
And the gold top finish suits perfectly imho.
One of these days ...
Turns out plans tend to change, so much for the Gold Top.
But hey, Cherry Sunburst ain't that bad either. 8)

Couldn't resist.
My local store ordered it for me with the option of sending it back, 5 mins and the deal was perfect. :D
Not much to add, it's everything I expected it to be and more.
The only thing I didn't particularly like were the stock 011s, they felt good but I didn't enjoy the trem's reaction to pedal steel bends.
Went back to my usual 010s and it's smooth sailing, for some odd reason those country bends leave the trem stable now.
Would have expected the opposite ...
Anyway, wonderful guitar, best PRS ever if you are into blues, country, classic rock. Grissom succeeded 150 %, again. :tu:

nice. I'd have to go hardtail myself but it's interesting what you said about those country licks not being an issue. There isn't a trem stopper/sim in there by any chance is there?

Thanks !
No TremStop in sight, just 5 springs.
Those bends are 95% in tune, your fingers autocompensate for the rest.
Weird however that 010s behave better than 011s ... :-o
The only explanation I can think of right now (didn't try) - maybe removing one or two springs and tightening the remaining ones would do the trick, we're dealing with a balance of various tension curves here .
I also don't know if all springs are created equal, at least I haven't seen any selected ones yet.
But I have absolutely no experience with this style of trem.
All my 7enders are blocked ...
It's perfect now with the 010s, so I won't do any more testing atm.

Btw, there is no directly comparable non-trem model atm, neck specs and electronics are exclusive. The closest equivalent would be a McCarty with nitro finish.
These PUs are really unique, especially combined with this exact combination of dual volumes, coil tap and bleed/tone caps. They completely geeked out over these details, and it paid off.

Either your wife really loves you or she's found the perfect way to keep you out of her hair.

Looks like a win-win for you either way.

:D Ummm, yes, and, er, yes! :tu:

As an aside, I've been the absolute nicest husband all week. I think I might actually be the beneficiary of some of the tricks my wife learned in the class she attends to train the family dog. Or SHE'S the beneficiary?

Like you said, either way, it's all good. :hihi:
